I AGREE, WHEN I HEARD THIS SONG FOR THE FIRST TIME I WAS 17, TODAY I'M 50, AND I'M VERY HAPPY TO KNOW THAT TODAY IT IS VERY SUCCESSFUL, EVEN HERE IN THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO BRAZIL
Fred is the founder of the band he doesn’t sing much most songs are vocals from Kate and Cindy! Expect in some few songs like Rock Lobster, Love Shack and other
Their vocals are so beautiful, I love when they both separately put a little gruff on a certain word and go back into the melody. I think they both kinda have similar singing voices. I don't know thier names but when they start singing together? The blond one sings a lower or higher octave than her homegirl and harmonizing the roam if you want "to". You can tell these two are mentally connected. No girls is trying to steal the spotlight. Its a two woman show. I love it and appreciate it musically. And my style is hard rock/metal. But good musicianship always wins and the end of the day, no matter what style music.
@@joelspringman7748 C'mon, you may not like ABBA, but if you don't think they didn't have amazing harmonies, you gotta listen harder. They were on another level. Dancing Queen is the best example, IMO.
@@LeviBulger They are the Partridge Family of Sweden. Don't EVEN compare ABBA to the B52's! What an insult! Why don't you compare them to Alvin and the Chipmunks?
To me, Kate and Cindy are the essence of the B52's. Fred is great, as are Keith and Ricky (RIP), and all of the other members that have come and gone...but the vocal harmonization of those 2 women. Are what makes the B52's so great. jmo.
Before autotune, studios did have techniques to smooth out vocals you know? But it was used well, like in this recording. Cindy & Kate never sound this harmonious live. But I agree auto tune would ruin it. ☮
@@EllaJay ..and nowadays, we have the ability to use "autuone" in such a nuanced fashion that it doesn't sound tuned - because it's not automatic. It's done note for note by hand. (Obviously the ability to sing in tune naturally is far more impressive and respectable) Some people overuse tuning for sure, but in my experience as an engineer, tuning is used sparingly. People think that autotuning is some magical tech that allows a terrible singer to just press a button and magically sound like Beyonce. In reality, it's used to fix small issues. Even with the best singers, it's used. If you get a GREAT take and a singer nails an entire verse, but just one note is _slightly_ sharp or flat, it'll be tuned to match the rest of the take. ...and the amount of tuning done is so minimal that 90% of people wouldn't even know the difference. However, if I have a singer who is completely off pitch and terrible, I'm not going to use tuning to fix that. I'm going to make them sing until they get the take properly. Tuning can also be used artistically to create really unique harmonies and pads that wouldn't be possible with organic takes. Back in the day singers would just do the take over, and over, and over, and over, and over until they finally got it. ..and like you said, there was still "studio magic" back then too. Almost every song ever recorded has been "touched up" and "fixed". That's literally what recording is. You're trying to get the best possible representation of your song. :) Musicians should be judged on their writing and live performance. Studio recordings are a whole different animal IMO.
You underestimate how auto tune works. There is absolutely no reason it HAS to tweak a pitch to the nearest contemporary Western scale. It is simpler to build a device that will latch onto a secondary input. In that case all you need for reference is a keyboard.
I never really paid attention to the B-52's, I only recently realized they had Beach boys level harmonies from those two girls. Really high level harmony stuff, this isn't amateur stuff where they just sounded good and came up with some stuff, this is really high level intelligent harmony, they do a lot of things most singers wouldn't think of, they don't really go to the 'easy' harmony, it's all very unique.
A lot on newer bands have singers with amazing voices. Some have wonderful harmonies also. It's just really hard to find on the radio. Look up 'First Aid Kit' Do some deep dive on them.
Their voices are so alike, so perfect and perfectly suited and complementary to one another -- what must the odds be that they would actually meet and sing together...incredible.
Yes sir.. There's something truly special about Kate and Cindy singing together. Cindy's voice is slightly squeeky, while Kate mixes the clean and raspy tones up beautifully. Cindy Wilson + Kate Pierson = Rock Legends!!!
Holy....Shit! This is one of the best things ive ever heard. Music today is all autotuned, created in the studio crap and no one i dont care who they are, will ever have the talent like Artist did back then.
Perfection. Absolute perfection. Sends chills down my spine...anyone who wants to sing duets would be well served to study this track. Thank you for preserving this performance!
Love these two, and the band. So uplifting and joyful. Love the way that there appears to be no competition between them, and the dancing is fantastic.
This is fabulous! I love the sound of their voices together. I totally agree with a prior comment, if this was done with autotune, it would’ve ruined the magic. The slight imperfections give it a phenomenal and unique quality.
Yup, a lot of people think the autotune is because the singer needs it, too many times in modern music they put autotune on everybody, including those that don't need it, and it smooths out all the character and makes them all sound similar. Really does a disservice to the singer, a lot of the modern women singing don't have a chance at LEGEND status because they have nothing that's their own, the voices are all sterlized with Auto Tune. That girl BeBe Rexha is a great example, she has a great voice but they autotune the hell out of it when she doesn't need it.
Their two voices together are one of the greatest things my ears and my soul have ever heard.
Lots of overdubbing on this song. Most of the time we're hearing 4 voices, two Kate's and two Cindy's. But sometimes three of each.
You really need to listen to bag pipes.

I've always thought that Kate Pierson was underrated. I didn't realise how talented Cindy Wilson was too. This video goes some way to show it.

Well, they've been practicing since 1977...😊
More talent in those 2 women than in any of the auto queen multi millionaires today
Amazing vocals, I am simply shocked. They are extremely talented.
Synergistic Harmony. Breathtaking Acapella.
The greatest duet vocalists next to Abba

Kate n Cindy, the heart and most certainly the SOUL of the 52s. It’s that simple
Of the many songs by The B-52’s that I really like, Roam has always been one of my favorites. This version helps me truly understand why!!
Can’t tell their voices apart 😍
Thanks for this. Can't imagine modern singers singingg such tight melodies with voices that have character and grit. Real voices no autowrecking

A million thanks!

Absolutely beautiful. Inside and out.
lyrics for reference:
I hear a wind
Whistling air
Whispering
In my ear
Boy Mercury shooting through every degree
Oh girl dancing down those dirty and dusty trails
Take it hip to hip, rocket through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without wings, without wheels
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel
Skip the airstrip to the sunset, yeah
Ride the arrow to the target, one
Take it hip to hip, rock it through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without wings, without wheels
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel
Fly the great big sky
See the great big sea
Kick through continents
Busting boundaries
Take it hip to hip, rocket through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without wings, without wheels
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
Take it hip to hip
Rocket through the wilderness
