  • Footage very kindly passed onto me by Bryan Green who is the source of the material :-) Sequence begins at 5.52am as usual with the BBC1 Test Card (on this occasion featuring the countdown numbers) and the opening tracks from Bottoms Up. Ceefax then takes over at 6.00am with a rare 'Armchair guide for new viewers' sequence with some TV and Film listings as part of a 16 page reel before the usual News, Finance and Sport etc pages takes over about 6.13am with initially 26 pages on the 198 newsreel although more pages are added during the transmission taking the total up to 35 eventually.

      Apparently, the following headline appeared on Ceefax.
      MAN APPEARS OVER SWIMMING POOL BODY
      I'm guessing they were trying to keep the headline limit to one line of text.

    Skilfully crafted blend of ragtime, Latin, novelty and ambient tracks. Very soothing. Loved this tape when it was in service, BBC1 at the time having a good selection of very different tapes while BBC2 dined out on ‘Max&Chax’ (Maximus and Chacksfield)! What I’d do to make it 1988 again

    It is interesting to note on Ceefax that the tv listings at the time only show BBC1 and BBC2-not ITV or Channel 4 at the time, but then I guess that was because it was on the other side! But then, nor does it give Radio details either, so I guess that was the case at the time. Thank you of course!

    Amazed to see that the countdown timer was still in use on the testcard as late as 1988. And haven't heard that particular tape in about 30 years. The appearance of those armchair guide pages was, I believe, an error. If I recall correctly, page 198 sometimes reverted to that selection of pages when in-vision Ceefax was not being aired on BBC One/BBC Two. I do have a recollection of looking in on page 198 in the evenings and it'd be an unusual collection of pages (such as the one in this video at 6am); not the typical in-vision selection. But generally, page 198 featured the same type of page selection that was shown during the in-vision sequences. On this occasion, it looks like page 198 was not reset in time for the 6am airing.

      @The TV Room
      There was a very long pause between the normal Pages from Ceefax first subpage and the Ceefax AM first subpage between 6.10am and 6.13am
      I would have assumed that 2/16 or 2/35 e.g. was the first news page shown at the start of each Pages from Ceefax/Ceefax AM broadcast. It did seem quite odd that subpage 8/16 was the first page of information of the Ceefax AM broadcast at 6.00am.
      Also notice 22/35 at 06:22/35.

    If we could hear Bottoms Up in its entirety, completing its outing, it could have been awesome. But nonetheless, It's so wonderful that it has a beach and summer rhythm all over the place! Well done Jez! You've done it again!
    If you have a few albums such as I Wonder If You Love Me and its direct successor Decanter, do let us know! We would love to hear the full tracks from both albums and on Ceefax!

      Thank you! Yes it's a very enjoyable tape and there was some terrific music accompanying Ceefax in the late 80s, I have some of Simple Piano and March From The Merry War on Ceefax from this time whick I will post soon but unfortunately I don't have I Wonder If You Love Me or Decanter either on Ceefax or in full I'm afraid - hopefully there is someone else out there who has?

      Jez C, with regards to Simple Piano, I would love to hear it! I'm looking forward to it.
      For Decanter, Ashley Michael Sowerby has the album, now available on RUclips. In that video, the whole songs can be heard for almost 35 minutes but it faded as Breakfast News was due to go to air at 6:30am. Why not you give it a listen? The songs there are worth listening to it.
      As for I Wonder If You Love Me, BBC Scotland had some of the songs recorded in 1993, in which it is also available on RUclips for viewing. The national airing of that tape began in 1985, replacing Ellipse. The tape was in fact replaced by Decanter in 1988, and was subsequently replaced by Soledad in 1992.
      I Wonder If You Love was well retained by BBC Scotland well into the 90's until BBC One Scotland began broadcasting BBC News 24 overnight in November 1997.

      CORRECTION: Inter State 48 had actually replaced Decanter on BBC1 in 1992 and Soledad was already on BBC2 in April 1992; however, there were some technical problems with that tape so in July 1993 Inter State 48 was played at a slower pace until Soledad transferred to BBC1 in the same week Colours was replaced by Slide Rule.

    OMG, I loved the test card as a Kid sneaking up between 4am-5am to play on the Nintendo and then getting off to sleep to Ceefax 888 or Carole Hersee and her clown on the test card *good times... sadly I never see Test card or Ceefax apart from the odd Sunday early hours on BBC2 for an hour or so before TV Transmission starts. Sad the entire Bottoms Up track is not available as I remember this track being played and I got hooked on it thought it was a cool piece of jazzy music, If you do find "Bottoms Up" please post thanks carl

      that's nice. so you record the sequence of the test card and Ceefax so which is 5:52am in the morning wow that's early I never get up that time. so what time did the recording finish and is the test card at the first part and Ceefax at the second that is so cool.

    • @jezc3507
      @jezc3507  7 лет назад +3

      Someone else recorded this - a really nice chap called Bryan Green who passed this footage onto me and has given me permission to post it up on RUclips - yes the music starts off on the Test Card at 5.52am (after the pulse bars fade) and then fades onto Ceefax and this carries on until just before 6.40am when the programmes started.
