WELCOME TO SEASON 5 OF FTB FILM STUDY WITH COACH NICK CODUTTI!
Coach Codutti profiles the defensive scheme that made Oregon head coach Dan Lanning one of the hottest names in the profession: the 4-2-5 MINT Defense. A variation of the old TITE defensive front, MINT has been Lanning's answer in stopping the run and applying unique pressures vs. modern spread offenses.

That Oregon nosegaurd is a MENACE
Duck fan here, enjoyed our welcome to our B1G new friends this year; but Huck the Fuskies and the $20m team that lost to Michigan
That entire Oregon DL is a menace when theyre healthy.
as someone who never played football that was so informative! love understanding what these defenses are created to stop and the holes in their ideologies
Hi Coach, congratulations on another very successful season - sorry about your recent loss - so close. A fantastic season for your players and coaches, and community.
PSU absolutely needs to score early. Oregon's defense adjusts extremely well between quarters and at half. Oregon will take what you do well early, stay firm in their initial approach, and allow you to have enough success to put a few points on the board while studying what you had success with, and understanding that your early success will be something you plan to lean on as the game plays out. They'll use your early success to script the rest of their defensive gameplan. They rush 4 and play man. They're patient, and trust that their 4 man rush is enough. PSU needs to be aggressive all game to have a chance in this one.
I really enjoy your analysis. I don't necessarily understand the technical aspects of football but your presentation opens my eyes to how teams and units actually apply techniques to control the game. I hope to see more of these in the future. Do you ever do them looking at offensive line play?
Could you also do a breakdown of Penn State's defense?
Any chance u can call coach to meet for dinner then get him totally plastered before the game? We need the help 😂
Gimme Bo in the RPO wide zone run game, mixed with PA, screens, Jet Sweeps and Arrow routes with tight WR formations. Definitely would like to see some stretch G and heck even duo rb looks. Maybe even wing t.
This defense may be hard for a pocket passer like Allar.
Great game plan I'm thinking here is Georgia Tech vs GA
Now, now, now. Don't you worry about a thing. The defensive Firm of Bassa, Burch, Bottcher, Harmon, and Associates will take good care of Mr. Allar.
@3rdandlong hahah i have no doubt they will unless they do a lot of the above🤣
Need to mix up quick game, spread the defense horizontally and put them in conflict and force them to make a choice.
We didn't do great at this against Ohio State and hoping leasons were learned but we will see.
@@across7162 What bothered me a little is the short period of time to prep. I believe they flew out yesterday to adjust to time zone. Nonetheless, I'm confident Dan and Tosh will dial up some good schemes to confuse PS offense. If Allar spends a lot of time in pocket, he will get to know Harmon, Burch, and Bassa really well lol.
I've got a feeling I've been seeing this all year. Don't run into the middle on first down. Don't play in the box and get behind the sticks on plays that go nowhere [and blame injuries on the offensive line]. Defense fitting gap, ready to trigger on plays to the flat.
Throw the intermediate out going away to back off the run fitters. Leak Warren out on the wheel or a delay. Get Clifford involved. Replace Flemming with a receiver. Anything but the predictable slow start stuff that gets Allar flustered.
Speaking of flustered, there's the insane amount of sacks and TFLs these guys generate. 10 sacks, 16 TFLs against Washington? Uiagalele on Rucci? Burch, looks like Lavar tossing guys. This could be real bad, real quick.
They are definitely good, but PSU has been pretty good at both limiting negative plays, and not letting them completely derail drives. Here is every drive with a negative play that was in the down sequence that "ended" the drive that didn't result in a TD (numbers in parenthesis are drives with 2nd or 3rd string in in garbage time):
0 (1) - West Viginia - Missed FG (2nd string)
3 - Bowling Green - Field Goal, Field Goal, Punt
1 - Kent State - Punt
2 - Illinois - Punt, End of Half
2 - UCLA - Punt, Field Goal
1 - USC - Field Goal
2 - Wisconsin - Punt, Punt
2 - Ohio State - Field Goal, Punt
0 - Washington
2 (2) - Purdue - Punt, Punt, Punt (2nd String), Punt (2nd String)
4 - Minnesota - Punt (Technically no gain by play by play, not TFL, but ESPN seems to have logged it as one for the defensive stats, so I'm including it), Downs, Field Goal, Field Goal
2 (2) - Maryland - Field Goal, Punt, Punt (2nd string), Downs (2nd String)
A total of 21 non garbage time drives were "ended" by negative plays. Of those, 8 still resulted in field goals. Obviously you'd like zero drives like this, but averaging just over one drive per game ended by a negative play with no points to show for it is *_not_* *_bad_* . On the season, PSU had 45 TFL's allowed, and Allar has been sacked 11 times in addition (Pribula never got sacked). Obviously a few of these drives listed above had multiple negative plays in the final sequence (ie - the Minnesota Downs one had back to back sacks), but for 56 total negative plays leading to only 18 (13 with first string) *_total_* drives where we didn't put points on the board shows an incredibly consistent offense that can stay on schedule even with some negative plays by the defense sprinkled in.
Oregon is gonna get theirs on defense, but if we can continue the trend of still grabbing points out of a chunk of those drives where they do, things shouldn't look so dire.
That nose tackle is going to a massive mismatch for the interior of our o-line especially Nick Dawkins. This just made me a lot less confident going into Saturday.
That was Caldwell #90, an honorable mention all-conference player. Derrick Harmon #55 is even more disruptive, he was 3rd team all conference.
Message to Big10 media and coaches: that’s disrespectful.
This D-Line will play like a group who has been disrespected.
Wasn’t Glenn Schumann the original architect of true ment front not lanning?
Hopefully the team watches this video before the game
Easy win for the Ducks.
Lol
That looks like a traditional 4-3 base defense where the linebackers can go into coverage, or blitz depending on how they read the play. The only twist is they have elements of a 3-4 defense with the nose tackle. There truly is nothing new in football. It all comes down to execution.
Where do you get the footage?

Ten black whips I’m too consistent
We are screwed 😅😂
Shhhhhhhhh. You're not supposed to tell Penn St. what we're doing on defense.
They can’t defend 6’6” 260 :)
Really? You will see.
@ ooooooohhhhh
@ I think psu attacks Oregon with multiple TE. It’s psu’s best group, and Oregon has been susceptible to that … see Michigan… who’s te had a big day. PSU’s group is better and deeper.
Penn State Fan trying give them a edge 😂. Sco Ducks 🦆
