I cannot relate how much this single video has helped me with my 3D modeling and rendering over the last year. Thank you infinitely for taking the time to make this and share it.
I tried the same silly thing but Sketchup says it is not possible....i suppose that is the kind of limitation of an "sketch" tool like SketchUp (which i love so far for its simplicity and elegant simplified but also stylized renders) compared to full blown CAD programs like SolidWorks, etc.
Thank you for this. Somebody may use this info: if your are using a plug in to bend your structures (like fredo scale) just remember to smooth the surface a little bit before applying the textures.
If the texture is applied to a Group or Component, there will be no 'Texture' in the right click menu. The geometry itself must have the texture you desire to be projected.
I have a tube where I want to wrap an image texture around. When I paint it with the paintbucket tool, it stretches out the texture image shows just half of the image (because it's streched it fills the whole surface of the tube though)...
Thank a lot! It really helped! But... Little questions. It mostly works great, but sometimes I don't have the 'texture' option when I click with right mouse button on a texture. Any idea what this is? If anyone is ever gonna reply... This video is quite old...
I am a landscape designer. I have a site plan that I want to "drape or overlay" the site plan over a topography or the component that I have created. Can this same method be used for what I am trying to do, or is there a better way to create that? Again, all I am wanting to do is take a jpeg of a site plan, and overlay it on top of the component/ topography that I have created. I can't seem to find a tutorial on this, but I feel like it should be easy to do... Thanks
I believe all you'd have to do is perhaps lock your model (for ease of selecting), create a rectangle over the whole site, move it up in the blue direction several feet above your model - then apply jpeg texture to your plane you've created. Select the face, click texture > Projected, then sample that texture and paint it over your model's topo. After unlocking it that is lol. Good luck!
I made a plain old cylinder, HxW ratio similar to a soda can. I rotated it on its side to represent a stationary 10k gal propane tank. I have followed this video step by step (I think, ha) and can get the logo on the cylinder, but it looks really messed up! Like there are 20 logos massed together. Any advice?
Would you be able to push pull that texture if you wanted to? I'm really looking for how to import a 2d image onto a structure and be able to push pull it
I need help. I been trying to find ways to click on the texture but couldn't do it..I right click it over but still there's no texture mention on my tab. Is it because I am using free version that's why I couldn't it? Appreciate your advice.
When I apply an imported image (as a texture) to any surface, it disappears, leaving a hazy representation of the general image colour. It should place itself on the surface, ready for re-sizing/manipulation. Any advice?
Great video! However, be careful when you are copy the texture from the "projected" version to the actual model. If your actual model has more surface length b/c it is curved radically in one direction you will end up tiling the image again on the actual model. Wonderful video and technique though!!!
Tried this and it didn't work for me. One of the greatest faults with SU is its ability to handle textures on anything but a flat surface. In 3ds max texturing is a breeze.
Why should cost be a factor? Sketchup handles badly, however there are many things it does far better than 3ds max (like inference modelling). Therefore your argument is flawed.

After using SketchUp for so, so many years I am still discovering little things that I feel that I should have known already. Thank you!
What is great about this dude, is his communication capabilities; thank you VERY much. This is now my preferred sketchup knowledge-base.
17 years later and still helping. thanks aidan
this is the fourth video I watched on this subject and you actually explained it perfectly, thank you
It's been 13 years since the upload date yet somehow Sketchup has not tried to make it easier for us.
now 17 years 😒
@@darren_k8401 and still counting. Hahaha
WOW YOU ARE A AMAZING I AM STILL USING YOUR HELP 17 YEARS LATER THANKS
Wow, Sketchup has not changed in the last 13 years
Underrated comment
Thank you so much for this. It's really a big help for a beginner like me.Looking forward to more of your tutorial videos. Blessings
Oh no...it all went away...
I laughed hard at that part. Great videos Aidan!
How could I make a hole in curve surface?
I have a curve surface and I need to do a hole for a screw and I don't know how to do.
Thanks.

very usefull...5 years later, but always actual !
Thanks for this, it helps me a lot for factories reengineering !
Thank you for this.

Perfect ! This was driving me nuts trying to figure this out. Thanks. Great videos by the way !!!!

I , Finally figured this Out !! Thanks alot for these videos they are very helpful for us dummies .
you saved my life in modelling mate, OMG, thanks so much! sub and like from me!!
Owen Wilson wants his voice back..
Thanks for the video, helped me out A LOT! :)

You saved my day and night! Just wonderful!
wow nice! but i have a question, will the picture stay after i rendered it w/ vray or any other plugins?
Thank a lot! It really helped! But... Little questions. It mostly works great, but sometimes I don't have the 'texture' option when I click with right mouse button on a texture. Any idea what this is? If anyone is ever gonna reply... This video is quite old...
You make it look easy! nice job sir!

thanks for taking the time to make all this helpful videos :)
what about mapping 3-D textures (not photos) to curved surfaces? Let's say you want to map a raised checker board pattern over a vase?

wow, this has been bothering me long time. now I am healed. Thank you mister!
nice work aidanchopra
great job, thanks. Please, how can we do the same in a sphere?
Would you be able to push pull that texture if you wanted to? I'm really looking for how to import a 2d image onto a structure and be able to push pull it
Hi, great video! Is there a way of doing this with png file? or only JPG?
thanks man,
had no idea this was even possible!
qwll its a pain when you have to do lots of curved surface mapping in a scene, but better than nothing. I wonder if theres a plugin or something

I tried that on a ship's stern but the result was a very big mess. Any ideas why? I tried to fix it but I couldn't...
You are the man! Don't let anyone tell you different. Thank you!
I wanted to rant about the low video quality until I saw this was posted *16 years ago*
This was very well done! Thank you!
Awesome! Daniel from Brazil.
Holy crap does r2017 still do this??
Thank you very much. I'm a real dummie. You are my hero!
how do i remove the snap thing? i cant move the object the way i want it.. pls help. thanks.
Great Tip! and very clear and easy to understand video. Thanks!
Please make a tutorial on how to map photo textures on warehouse models.
Thanks for the video. Was able to apply a picture to a dome shape.
Greatest video ever
THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU JUST GOT ME AN A IN GRAPHICS!!!
Very good video, this is useful if you dont want to get that tiled look. Thanks.
Gracias :D
As for the adjust of the image on the first part also right click entity info click the image to edit and change the aspect ratio ;)
How to draw hollow letters to build in wood?
Thanks for this help! It is perfect! Very clear explanation

Doesn't sketchup support clamped (non-repeating) textures :u
Thanks dude! Keep up the good work!
excelente... es de gran ayuda el que compartas tus conocimientos! amazing! thanks!
Wow this will really help me, thank you.
Nice, thanks. I was making a bottle so I was harder than I expected.
how to edit position when the texture is already on object?
Around 2:18 you can drag the texture, but how the fuck I can re-enter that mode for already loaded materials?
Just what i needed! thank you!
Thanks! Short and informative as we all like!!! :)
Thanks very much man! Excellent tutorial.
Alt on PC to sample not Ctrl.
Thanks, that helped me a lot...
Thanks for this video. It's a lot useful.
how do you overlay textures?
3ds also costs a gazillion dollars so factor that in before you make that argument.
Thank you! Great tutorial, helped me A LOT!
still works great. thanks!
SOOOOO useful. I need to do the same but with a Cylinder thoug. I'll get it my best shot
Thank You
Great video.
Really great, thanks so much
great work
Wow these videos are so helpful. Thanks for the information ;))
its realy working crack, thank u very much!
Thank you. Very useful tutorial.
what was that black space???!!!!!!
really good video, very helpfull,
thanks
Great video. thanks alot
woww...video 16 years ago
Very nice. Thank you.
how to add multiple logos in same curved surface?
make the multiple logos on image editor and put it on curve by the same way...I think..cmiiw..
OMFG Thank you so much!!!
Thanx! Now i'm thinking about how to do extruded text on a curve surface )
