Matthias is a great teacher and an awesome guy! Proud to have earned my purple belt from him. I look forward to trying the low pistol grip variation on the Xande sweep.
Matias is one of the best Jiu Jitsu instructors out there! Super underrated and technical. If he taught on either of the coasts everyone would know of him. If you are ever passing through New Orleans check him out. He runs a great gym with a solid group. I live in SoCal with all the tops gyms and he is right up there with the great instructors.
Half way through the video I noticed the Nola symbol on pants. I am starting at the metairie location as soon as I can figure out a babysitter situation. I've heard nothing but good things about all 3 locations. Great Vid.
Great video! Great detail! Basic but yet little things to focus on to hit them with more efficiency! OSS!! Nova Uniao Hilo,HI (Penn training and fitness)
Love this video. It is one of the few that truly helped me right away in my training. I am having an issue with some of the higher belts using their shin to pin my leg that is on the ground during the scissor sweep then getting to half guard, but hopefully when I get better I can avoid that.
STeVeEBoI2k7 The way to solve is as soon as you open your guard you need to be ready to GO. Do not sit there in the scissor position, you have to explode fast or anybody good will smash and pass. Good luck
@@STeVeEBoI2k7 drill it and like the professor stated everyone has their own little style. Play around with grip positions. I personally like punching their arms deep between legs. It makes for your partner to be more off balance and hard for them to try and post if you happen to lose the grip during the sweep.
His left leg doing the push/scissoring on the scissors sweep is far too low. When it's that low it's far to easy for the opponent to smash the legs. Moving the knee side closer to sternum allows you to raise them up and back , stops them coming forward and gives you a tall and narrow structure to collapse with the scissors .
I like the popping up on the elbow to load him up for the scissor sweep. However is it hard to get up on the elbow if your opponent is pulling back on the arm you have gripped?
Awesome! I can only fight heavy classmates in my guard because they can easily project me. I need to get better at my sweeps. It's hard fighting guys 3x your size but that makes it realistic and fun 😂
What's the move where you're on the guard then you grab his right arm, your right foot goes to his right shoulder while your left leg hooks his right arm, then your right arm goes under his left leg and you flip him over?
Matthias says he likes the scissor really low but pretty much every other video says it's very wrong to keep the shin that low. I'm just a wb trying to make sense of this, is this defensible to have it so low? Does he do something to prevent his leg being crushed by his opponent that others don't?
About when you hook the leg the only thing i would say is make sure it's a deep hook if not your at risk of a wrist like my brother does it all the time to people
Question to anyone who knows the answer. Why is the knee shield across the hip for the scissor rather than across the midsection/chest area. I've seen this sweep done both ways but I seem to get stacked less with the knee shield higher up.
Joe, I have been practicing the flower sweep for quite a bit, it seems that when I hook the leg underneath, the person flattens out or I just can’t get the sweep. Do you think it’s the pendulum leg not coming all the way through? Thank you.
i learned the flower sweep by pablo popovich and it shows yours as the xande sweep. so i guess I been doing the xande sweep the whole time and not the flower
funny enough I call it the flower sweep, but a couple of the professors at our gym told me it wasn't, so Joe researched and apparently it's called Xande sweep as well cause of Xande Ribeiro. you never stop learning in this sport.
Hey Gabriel, I call the one where i grab pant legs, flower sweep the other pendulum sweep, my understanding is different people call these different names. So you can call it what you like....
Rolling with a fast purple belt , he passes guard on my top leg during the scissor. The only way I can stuff him to keep give him zero space. Do you find that happens a lot BJJ Joe?
With higher belts it's better to hit the scissor while they are transitioning to pass and you can't telegraph it. It has to be a quick transition on your part. Hope that makes sense.
man I can't chew gum myself while rolling (I'm just to exhausted) but a lot of the higher level guys at my gym casually chew gum while kicking my ass 😂
FYI to all the noobs if you scissor sweep with your shin as low as he shows in the demo, your leg will just get smashed by a halfway decent opponent. You want your shin and knee to be higher--across the top of his stomach and closer to his chest so he can't just smash you with his weight.
@@BJJJoe yes i'v trained for ten years, in the real world while your trying to sweep someones he's headbutting you into oblivion, it works in a BJJ competition enviroment because its governed by rules. its interesting that you can watch hours of video on almost every technique but there are very few vids on sweeps in MMA or street confrontations., How many sweeps have you ever seen in a beach fight or a 3am Punch up? ..the whole concept of GJJ was that sweeps become irrelevant once someones in your guard ...i v watched a lot Rio Heros and Gracie challenge matches and sweeps are rare, you do see the occasional one but these are generally fucking ugly and more luck than judgement ...But we are now entering an argument of the sports JJ and the real world.

I love this video. The xande sweep has been my go to sweep fromguard ever since i started bjj

Man, I can't believe he said "Pump myself up" with that accent. Awesome.
There are some very significant details in this video that I've missed when I try the xande/flower sweep. Thank you for the great video!
Dropped into this gym twice while on work trips in the past few years, he was a great instructor and very welcoming

4 months training bjj and i love this sweep so much! works so well
This video has made my whitebelt game so much better. Thank you
This is awesome. I have puzzled over the distinction between Xande and flower sweep, and it's the grip! Over with the pants, or under hooking the leg.
I remember watching this as a beginner and thinking these sweeps were impossible 😂
I’m a beginners and they are impossible.
@@derekaugust5027 true
they are impossible
As a purple belt who used to love scissor sweeps... they are now impossible again 😂😂😂
DETAILED AND TO THE POINT EXPLANATION. GREAT EXAMPLES FROM EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU!!
Great video. Very clear and to the point on each sweep.
Awesome video great demonstration. Details that I've never really focused on. I think I'll hit these better. Thanks man!
I'm not a beginner by any stretch(7 years) but I never play closed guard and this was super useful. Thank you.
The sweep at 4:05 is awesome, I've been caught out by it numerous times without realising.
Index for those in a hurry:
3:23 Scissor Sweep
6:36 Xande Sweep

He explains so well!

The flower sweep is actually the second one with the captured sleeve side foot posted near the shin to prevent posting.

are you still having this problem a year on? if not how did you overcome this ?? white belt here trying to gain some knowledge .

Foot on knee to gauge and sweep. Or keep your knee off the ground and block their bottom leg with your ankle

Great video, definitely going to practice these sweeps. Loved the sexy music at the end lol
Very thorough explanation. Thank you for posting.
Hago judo pero la parte de suelo me apasiona mucho, este video está super
Awesome! cant wait to try it. thanks so much!
good looking gym NolaBjj.. brick is on point/ thank god for the wall mats! :-P

Smooth techniques professor!
Thanks Matt, Joe did a fine job making it look good.
I knew all this tecniques already butcher The details is what i needed, thanks.
Love the flower sweep!!!!
I also kick with the right leg in the air during the sweep to kreate more Spinn during the sweep
Great video!

A year late...but what do you do when you are attempting a sweep, and they sprawl? New student here.
Loving it ous!
What do I do if the person stands up in a scissor sweep in no gi
Hashim Ashram De La Riva guard
scissor sweep gets you heel hooked. At least in my academy where i attempted this probably 7-10 times.
Great instruction, danke.
About when you hook the leg the only thing i would say is make sure it's a deep hook if not your at risk of a wrist like my brother does it all the time to people
I usually use the sweep from kimura grip.
Question to anyone who knows the answer. Why is the knee shield across the hip for the scissor rather than across the midsection/chest area. I've seen this sweep done both ways but I seem to get stacked less with the knee shield higher up.
Ive been trained to put my knee shield higher up to get more power. Ive noticed i really struggle with my sweep if my knee is lower
Joe, I have been practicing the flower sweep for quite a bit, it seems that when I hook the leg underneath, the person flattens out or I just can’t get the sweep. Do you think it’s the pendulum leg not coming all the way through? Thank you.
thank you
pendulum variation?
can someone please tell me what a carpet sweep is, I keep searching for it I get videos of the sweeps in this video. does it have a different name?
Never heard of it?!?
Those were pendulum sweeps not flower sweeps. The swinging leg is the pendulum. A flower sweep bridges off of the floor.
Hey I didn't know that t-bag was doing bjj! Anyway greats sweeps!

that's my understanding, yes sir.

Nice. Can't wait to try these. But is that guy (second partner) really chewing gum on the mats?
We actually have a Black belt instructor who chews gum while teaching. Oh well.
+noaidie This is what it feels like to chew 5 gum.
man I can't chew gum myself while rolling (I'm just to exhausted) but a lot of the higher level guys at my gym casually chew gum while kicking my ass 😂
I chew gum alot, feel like it helps as a mouth guard for casual rolling. Dehydrates you though.
Some people chew gum because it enforces breathing to fix the bad habit of holding your breath while rolling.
Isn't the 2nd one a flower sweep and the last one a pendulum? The Xande is just a flower sweep...
Donald Biermann everyone has a different name for them
Takes for ever to explain
pretends he paid for quick explanation
ㅆㅂ 지도자가 설명하는데 껌 쫙쫙 씹고 있네.... 와.... 아무리 문화차이라지만.... 대단하다!!!
isn't that called pendulum sweep?
I would say a hybrid between flower and pendulum
What a beast
last thing i expected after these sweeps was the sexy ass music at the end hahaha
I could never hit the scissor sweep. I watched this video a few times and then hit the scissor twice in one class.
very imformative
Hotforwords music for intro
I love how the guy in the guard is chewing gum. Maybe he will choke himself out while training.

You very rarely see sweeps in Competition or MMA because theory and practice don't last the first seconds of reality.
Clearly you don’t train or compete. Sweeps occur all over competitions and in MMA.

30 seconds of time wasted at the beginning.
