  • When it comes to selecting the right diaphragm elk calls, the choices can be overwhelming. However, there is a simple process for finding the one that works best for you.
In this Episode of the Fire Away Q&A, Corey Jacobsen answers that very question and explains the differences in diaphragm elk calls, as well as how to determine which one is going to work best for you. He also demonstrates different diaphragm elk calls and shows that the way they are manufactured affects the sounds that they produce.
To submit your elk hunting questions, simply send an email to info@elk101.com, and be sure to include “fire away“ in the subject of your email. If your question stands out, we just might include it in a future Fire Away Q&A Episode!

I've read your University of Elk Hunting course multiple times and it's by far the best thing a guy/girl can do to increase your elk hunting success. The nuggets and tips Corey reveals in his course are priceless for the out of state hunters that head west every year to chase Elk. I highly recommend it!!

    Corey,
Thanks so much for your help, and this video is great! I picked up a Raging Bull a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the sound I’m able to get from it already. I will be ordering a couple of Contenders and All Stars for sure. Again, thanks so much for taking your time to help out this Ky wannabe elk hunter!!

My son was practicing at Thanksgiving while watching videos of your elk hunting videos from this pass seasons. He is headed back to Colorado for 4th season and hoping to finally get one. He saw more elk last year but still was unable to connect. I’m sure he will be using your suggestions an thank you for being helpful all the time! God Bless!!!

Thanks Corey for this video. That was a great video on how to choose and what diagram works in what way. I have both the contender and the champ reeds, but may have to pick up the allstar as well.

I have used the All Star and love it. I can really get a "louder" bugle from this than many other options. For my mouth it fits me perfectly. I will add when you find the one that fits you, go buy a bunch, cause they wont be in stock just before or even after elk season. They are just too popular.

Love your videos, thank you for sharing your experience. Do you have any videos that show you doing the calls without a tube so we could here what actually is going on without the added effect of the tube...look forward to more of your videos.

Thanks from Idaho Cory! I've got an issue with the call sitting against my denture, the hard dome vs the plastic denture makes it very difficult to seat the call. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem and I'd love to hear any suggestions. Thanks again.

I've tried at least 50 different reeds never have been able to make an elk sound with one . I learned how to voice bugle in the 70's before the reed craze

Corey, great video. I have a call related question. My reed, the contender, is great. But for some reason tends to slip in my mouth, not the sound, the actual call. Usually after practicing for awhile and the call softens up in my mouth. I let it sit, try the next day and it’s good. Am I holding my tongue wrong?

What about those of use that have an extreme gag reflex? I can use small primos cow call, but the larger calls touch too far back in my throat and I gag.

    Cory,
I have a bad gag reflex which prevents me from being able to use a Diaphragm call. I have used Rocky Mountain select a-bull system which worked really well for me this season as well as some of the cow reed calls, but it really limits me when it comes to the chuckles, threatening bugles and anything much past location calls. Maybe I am not using it the correct way to get those sounds, but just wondering what options you would recommend for fixed calls that have the best range of different calls, particularly bugles and grunts. Thanks for all your great information.

Hi Tbone! Some diaphragms work better for some than others. You may find the Champ much easier to use. Hope this helps :)
