Star Wars: A Vergence in the Force [Episodes I-III Fanedit]

  • Although he never released it to the public, Topher Grace is typically credited with starting the trend of re-cutting the Star Wars prequels into one movie. His fan edit suggested that somewhere in between the bloated films, there’s a good movie.
    A few fan edits were made in the spirit of Topher Grace’s cut, but none of them fully satisfied me. They went on too long or the quality of the editing wasn’t strong enough. They also cut too much out of Episode 1. I decided to do one myself.
    After working for a few months with friends to help and give me notes, I’ve created a fan edit that I think satisfies. It sticks to the story of Anakin’s descent into the dark side, his relationship with his mother, his thirst for glory, and his somewhat unhealthy relationship with Padmé.

    Wow so, this was kicked off RUclips for a few years and then magically reappeared a few weeks ago. Thank you Disney? I'm so happy to see so many people enjoying it. When me and my good friend Paul Odgren made this together back in 2015, we thought it'd get like 514 views. It's been amazing to see the response over the years. Thank you all for watching. ❤

    • @Sam_on_YouTube

      Obviously the original dialogue in that scene sucked, but the problem with fan edits is that it was not possible to substitute good dialogue. As a result, the story line is just left even more underdeveloped than in the original.
      Similarly, the mute Jar Jar just seems like a recurring joke for the fans. He sucked as a character, but removing all his lines is almost as bad as his racist stereotype of a Jamiacan accent.

      Yeah I actually came to a similar conclusion. I wanted a good edit of the prequels that would tell a more solid story. It seems it's not possible, they will forever be awful. They definitely make me appreciate the orig trig more though, so there's that.

    At first, I didn’t like the change to Maul’s ”death” but the lethal efficiency of it and how we would have reacted to seeing Mail in two pieces as he fell changed my mind.
    It was a more vicious death in this version. One slip in a lightsaber duel and you’re done. It showed the lethality of a lightsaber.

      I agree. Having Obi hanging on with Maul just looking at him, only to flip over him and cut him in half while he just derpily takes it? Yeah.. this is much better.

  • @ChrisWEEZ

    Decent edit. It made Anakin and Palpatine's relationship make a little more sense, and emphasized Anakin's concern for Padme. A bit action-heavy for me. I would have omitted the ending where we see Padme giving birth and naming the twins. It would have been more surprising in the original trilogy to find out that not only is Anakin alive, but his children also survived. We also could have assumed Leia grew up with Padma for a time, which would have made her line about remembering her mother in Return of the Jedi make sense.
    That said...when all you've got is lemons, it's hard to make anything more than lemonade. Anakin and Obi-wan's dialogue in Revenge of the Sith is still painful. Anakin's inane reason for turning to the Dark Side and his apparent stupidity are still there.
    Still would love to see the Topher Grace edit. 😎

  • @TornadoCreator
    @TornadoCreator 6 лет назад +19

    This was genuinely brilliant. During the Mustafar scenes where you've edited out certain lines of dialogue the lack of music is very apparent and slightly jarring. It also sounds like there's some distortion in the last bit where Anakin is lying burning, and Obi-Wan is shouting at him; as though the volume is cutting out a little. Ultimately just technical stuff...
    Frankly this is FAR better than the prequels as a whole. The editing of Episode 2 that made Anakin's and Padme's relationship look more like he was being persistent to the point of gas-lighting, that was great. Makes sense that Vader would have a warped idea of love based on what his own desires rather than a mutual attraction and affection.
    The beginning was very quick cut, perhaps it was a little over-cut; but it ended up being an ultimately far better film as a whole than any of the prequel films alone. Well done.

    • @chriswronka1378
      @chriswronka1378  6 лет назад +8

      thanks the gaslighting was exactly what I was going for! He's a creep and successfully manipulates Padme into loving him. And that distortion is RUclips's fault, it caught a copyright on that song at that part and tried to remove it I guess? And it's too late to fix because it has too many views. But I have a copy here, without the distortion: avergenceintheforce-blog.tumblr.com/
      And the beginning is choppy I agree, because I tried to keep as much as I could but still keep the film to a normal film length. And I didn't want to start with the the Maul fight like a lot of other recuts. But I hit what story beats I felt important to the overall story of Anakin so I'm satisfied with it.

    • @runi5413
      @runi5413 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I've kinda pictured that movie in my head as well... My take would be to do a version of the classic Romulus & Remus myth about brotherly betrayal (or sisters, doesn't rlly matter) as an origin-story for the Jedi and the Sith.
      Set on some primitive backwater planet bereft of modern technology (to set up the swords & knights stuff for later) and then maybe introduce a hostile, more advanced alien species they have to go up against (before turning on each other), so that's how lightsabers enter into the story.

    I love the edit, but I would’ve kept in the scene where Palpatine manipulates Padme into holding a vote of confidence it’s by far the most important scene in that entire movie and I’d say of the best parts of it. not to mention is a natural Segway to them leaving for Naboo. As it happens in the edit, they just kind of leave after arriving.

    I particularly like the transition into Episode III, it's a really good match shot that conveys that time has passed (I also noticed the bit of the Clone Wars rendition of the main theme to make the musical transition- good use of resources, I bet that took ages to find and make work). I was disappointed with the time skip to Episode II when I saw it, but honestly there's just no good material to show the passage of time there. Excellent cutting my dude

      Not a good idea changing the quality of the movie such as zoom-in that you can't see the action you don't know what's going on, ugly sound, backwards, missing action that you cut the scene to shortening the good story. Instead of destroying the quality it might as well put it in the small screen size without changing all those quality as I mentioned. The RUclips, movie seller, website movie pay won't say anything because it's already in an ugly small screen size movie. The upload quality of the movie is excellent.
      If those qualities were degraded no one will watch it unless if somebody is desperately want to watch even though couldn't understand what's going on just to kill the time lol.
      Editorbinks, thnx for that excellently, smartly, beautiful upload.

    I didn't think it possible but you managed to edit the first movie where it is actually good. I like the edits made. I love the fact you edited the final battle to the essential elements. I'm intriqued on the rest. I will have to favorite this and check the rest later. So far... nice work.

      Agreed. The brevity of it really gave the action that much more of an impact. Even opens up the quick victory up to the interpretation that Obi had to tap into a sliver of the dark side to get that rage-induced edge for the quick win. Of course, that's just me thinking too deeply into it. Buuut...even with that, that's essentially a apart of the point of these sort of things also!

    Many times I thought about doing a prequel fan edit, but now I don't have to because you got everything perfectly right. This is excellent! This segues perfectly into Rogue One. The original spirit of the story is finally found from your tighter and more focused storyline. If Disney and George Lucas knew what a gift you gave, Disney would release your edit with Lucas' blessing as 3-D in the theaters.

    Positioning the Battle for Naboo as the inciting incident was a brilliant move; that's effectively what it is anyway, and it makes for a cool action setpiece to kickstart the story!

    this is really good, id give it an 8/10 , some of the pacing seems rushed at times and a bit of extra time in space would have been good, perhaps adding an extra 15 minutes in total to smooth transitions and allowing the audio to flow a little better. however it is pretty awesome to see it all recut to a single movie

    This is amazing. I'm going to take my 83 year old mother, who took me to see the original at the drive-in in 1978, to see the new film. I don't want to explain everything. That way she can figure out what's going on. This very much helps by removing totally irrelevant content.

    [Excuse my english. Not a native speaker.]
    God, this is good.
    One can tell you were really concerned with storytelling while making this. Unlike other recuts I've seen, this actually sounds like an actual movie. And it's a good one. You've operated a miracle. Cutting off the whole Kamino plot? That was genious. Works damn well, seriously. Not to mention your choices about episode 1 and all the other details.
    The only problem was in me as an audience. Since I find episode 3 in specific a reasonable movie and I'm used to it, it was hard for me to swallow the cuts made into it. Yet it's clear that these cuts make complete sense to the objective and I'm not blind to the fact that half of the screentime is from that movie.
    I think I'm gonna adopt this as the definitive version from now on.
    I plan on making subtitles to it in my language (brazilian portuguese) so I can share it with my friends.
    Thank you for this excellent job. Congratulations.
    It gets me thinking if it wouldn't be a good idea to keep episode 3 untouched and only merge episodes 1 and 2. What are your thoughts on that?

      @chriswronka1378  8 лет назад +14

      +Henrique Pardinho Hey thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it. And about Episode 3, I never did think of keeping Episode 3 fully intact for a few reasons. For one, there are a lot of moments I just don't like, specifically some moments from first 25 mins or so (on the ship, the crash landing, it's all a waste of time). I tried to keep what was important: The awesome opening shot with the two Jedi starships, Griveous's introduction, and Dooku's death.
      I also didn't like the Yoda/Sidious fight. That was so ridiculous. And the plotline where Anakin was a double spy always felt needlessly convoluted to me. There are also so many pointless scenes between Anakin & Padme where they talk about what they just did, and what they're about to do. So I cut those.
      Another consideration I had was length. I wanted to keep this to a normal movie length to keep that regular movie feeling. Otherwise only the hardcore star wars fans would watch it (they're still probably the only ones who will but whatever).

      +Henrique Pardinho I found the story and pacing of the whole first 45 minutes to be very abrupt, lacking any explanation of what was happening. I know its hard to improve on that section! but the cut seemed to throw me around. I get the concept of what you tried to do, and if you know that going in it makes sense.
      However after a somewhat bumpy start (gliding over a few too many things, all too briefly to make a coherent story) it was a brilliant edit, and it works brilliantly in machette order (45 (1) 23 6) showing anikin becoming vader. Its like watching an extended flashback of that change and, on the whole star wars still remains lukes story with a flash of that vader transformation in the middle.
      amazing

      +Henrique Pardinho Dude, please make these subtitles. I'd be pleased to help you, I'm brazilian too as you've probably already guessed. I'm introducing my sister into SW, and just finished Empire today. I'm looking for a decente cut of the prequel trilogy, and looks like I finally found it.

    So when Obi Wan (at 1:21:39) jumps down to face General Grievous and says :-
    "HELLO THERE"
    This two word welcome came about from a teacher of ours. .
    He's from Liverpool and good mate of mine, before he was Adidas VP Europe, he was our lecturer in Business Studies ('88-90) working for a college we attended. .
    He (T) had nicknames for all us 16yr olds on course , I was 'Nick the Man' and he was a comedic talented educated fella, whom welcomed late comers to class with...
    "HELLO THERE" , it was remembered by other class mates, one whom went on to write ✍️ and wrote parts of the script for LUCAS in USA.
    He remembered our lecturer T and his "Hello There " and so used it for Ewans portrayal of Obi Wan...
