    • @alexriese9883
      @alexriese9883 7 лет назад +3

      No disrespect intended, but I feel like the album version of Sultans is the pinnacle of musical storytelling. The completely laid-back connection between drums and bass and the subtle licks in between each lyric are just so perfect. In any live version I've seen, the soft, dynamic nature of that song were just lost in favour of a larger, more enigmatic sound that makes it too similar to other soulless stadium rock.

    • @ifonlyeah
      @ifonlyeah 7 лет назад

      how dare you disrespect my taste?!?!!!!!! lol jk. actually in my opinion the studio version is great but its too short. ths live version however, feels crap because i dont wanna hear the audience cheering and clapping. so i kinda wish they did the album version longer

    • @aadyansonawne1321
      @aadyansonawne1321 6 лет назад

      Alex Riese I agree, Sir. Peak Dire Straits was just those four guys playing stripped down music that you'd hear in a bar. You've got to match the music with the lyrics and the magic of Sultans of Swing is lost with the Sax and the Keyboards and so on. The studio version is best, indeed. Good comment👍

    One of my favorite solos is from One of These Nights by the Eagles. It has a great feel that fits very well into the music style, it's melodic, makes use of the mid and high range of the instrument, and makes great use of spacing in such a way that you can appreciate every note as part of the story that's being told. That song is just really groovy :)

    My all time favorite solo is Little wing by hendrix, that man really bring his guitar alive and she cries like a fucking dying person, it has power, emotion and really feels like an another entity is on stage performing, that solo has it's own existence

    • @gabriellupilunguinho8158
      @gabriellupilunguinho8158 7 лет назад +5

      Its the easiest solo to play at the same time it is the most difficult thing to deal with, it breaks you in a half that do not want to stop jamming through because if you do so you will be killing this one melancholic and powerful emotion that it brings to you. That's why i fucking love hendrix

    Hard to believe no one's mentioned Alex Lifeson of Rush in 'La Villa Strangiato'. Starts off with clean and calm blues and builds into frenzied hard rock shredding over a couple of minutes. One of the most masterful and tasteful solo progressions I've ever heard.

    favorite solos?
    Hendrix on All Along the Watchtower. It's far from a virtuoso exposition, but it's perfect.
    David Gilmour on Comfortably Numb (both solos). Classic Gilmour. Tasteful licks and bends done masterfully.

    I play for ten years, I teach people sometimes, record so I don't really look for tutorial videos of how to play. But your channel impressed me, it's something else, the notions are much deeper and easly explained, the theme is funny. And when you said John Frusciante californication... I'm sold. Comfortably Numb would be my choice too but if narrowing to heavier music i never heard better solo than Ron Jarzombek's final, 2 minute solo at the end of Rivers Dancing by Gordian Knot. It is a metal equivalent of Comfortably Numb in emotional storytelling, but using means of expression characteristic to heavier genres.

    Gold stuff, great video man. I'll start applying the concepts ASAP. A solo that really changed my view on guitar playing was on the classic Jamtrackcentral video of Fives by Guthrie Govan. I remember listening to it 6-7 years ago for the first time, when I was just a kid and didn't know jack shit about music and thinking "this guy has something different. I want that". I hold it very dear to my heart to this day.

    Midnight at the Oasis by the incredible Amos Garrett. One of the most challenging and iconic from pop music.
    BTW, I just love your work. You do what you do as good or better than anyone I've seen.

    Song " I need peace "
    Band , frank black and the Catholics
    Great solo, underrated guitarist. Actually the solo is one continuous solo, split into two styles.

    Jeff Loomis' solo in The River Dragon Has Come. It has a very diminished/atonal feel and it's fast but somehow, it has that "x-factor" that sets it apart from a lot of flashy cliche metal solos.

    David Gilmore in "Comfortably Numb". Talk about musical stories - he writes a best- selling novel. I get chills everytime I hear it.

    another good solo tip is "start low / end high".....you build tension . Joe Bonamassa on "Takin' The Hit" is a great example. OF course...you can also make it work the opposite way....Felder's "one of these nights' solo is a good example of that but he does bring it back up by the end of the solo setting up the chorus again.

    One of my favourite guitar solos of all time would have to be Little Sister by QOTSA. The mix of pacing, oddness and slight sexiness really compliment the lyrics and the themes of the song and that's what makes a good solo for me.

    Favorite solo: Jack White on "There's No Home For You Here" off of Elephant (1:53-2:30).
    More importantly:
    From the principles you hit for good soloing (many thanks), I'd love to see how they play out across genres... or the hardware itself.
    I have a classical Brazilian guitar on which I attempt things like... Beatles. Semi-hollow body electric with jazz strings... Zeppelin. Just got a righteous Martin acoustic... The Hives.*
    My point: how you do feel about the intersection of gear/genre/your soloing principles?
    *I royally tank on all the above.
