  • This is the first of potentially more episodes where we look for microplastics in food and other things. This microplastic episode was inspired by a study I found, which reported that billions of nanoplastics and tens of thousands of microplastics were found in tea. The study is listed at bottom of the description.

Nice work, very interesting. Botton line is you can't trust much of anything processed. This is why I buy loose leaf tea and use mesh or bamboo strainer. I find this method less messy that the teabags.

That’s cool. Glad I don’t drink tea. Be cool to see where else micro plastics are found. Hot water in a plastic cup. Micro styrofoam in styrofoam cups. Things like that. Keep up the awesome work!

Perhaps rename this show to be "Micro Panic Attack Mondays" cause I am already nervous. Thanks for the great content, and perhaps @NileRed can hook you up with nile red!

7:45 looks like the James Webb Telescope images - this is awesome!

Haha maybe the Hubble. The James Webb Telescope blows this away! Either way, that’s why I love looking at the microscope with the dark field filter on. Feels like outer space 🪐

I kept waiting for you to zoom in on the samples.
What is your setup, how does your microscope work and how much can you magnify a human hair as a comparison?

Oh shoot, I forgot to mention magnification and stuff. I’ll compare to a human hair next time. This was with my compound microscope. In this video, I alternated between 40x and 100x magnification. I’ll show my setup soon, as I’m planning a behind the scenes video

We have plastic fabrics with fine threads all around turning to dust from wear. It probably falls into food unintentionally. Then you have plastic containers and tools that scratch easily from cleaning with any kind of crystals like suger.

Great thoughts! I was thinking my next episode would feature Microplastics in clothes.

Hey, this video has been very informative. I wanted to know if there is any research on micro plastics in relation to cooking food sous vide. This method of cooking is becoming popular, using plastic bags to cook food in hot water so the food can reach the same internal temperature throughout. I am concerned that similar to tea bags, putting food in plastic bags and then exposing them to hot water to cook may have a similar effect to tea bags. Any research or advice on the matter would be appreciated!
