    I´ve been following a lot of very good RUclipsrs and came to a personel balanced thruhiking equipment. The real difficult part is to leave things at home. Dare to minimize your equipment. I´ve seen people on the West Highland Way with rucksacks like paratroopers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Rev! For me it has been a great help. Cheers, Henk.

      Thanks Henk. Yes, a minimalistic pack is a key to a successful hike. (BTW…the West Highland Way is at the top of my “To Do Hikes.”) 😁

    Post sciatica victim here…my PT told me the exercises he prescribed I am to do for the rest of my life and I am and WILL. My most important, especially with backpacking when you naturally lean forward a bit due to the pack, is to get on stomach, lift arms up and extend to arch your back. Rep about 10x per day or 2x per day. I’m sure there’s a term for this, but I don’t know it, I just do it.

    Hey, it's always good to get a different perspective on things. I use a softball before and after a hike to roll out my glutes, hammies, and calves. I like to do it on my bed, incase I get sleepy and then I can have a snooze!! LOL I found it is nicer to snooze on the bed than the floor!!!

    I'm 58 and have had knee surgery. I usually start my day by hiking for about 15-20 minutes to get warmed up, then find a good place to stretch. If I don't stretch, I have real problems. Later when I get to camp, I'll roll some of the muscles with either a Nalgene (which I don't carry much anymore due to weight) or a Cork Massage Ball.

    For first time backpackers, see about borrowing from family or friends before you drop a small fortune on gear! And when you decide that you enjoy backpacking, and you start collecting your own gear, buy the pack last. Get the pack that will fit your gear. 😊

      That sounds like advice I will like to try sometime.

      Definitely! While the advice in the video is very good (as ever!), Darwin and co are the hardcode end of trekking and will often go for the lightest (and usually more expensive) offerings. Given the distance that they put in, the cost per mile of their equipment will be relatively low. This doesn't mean that their kit isn't good: it is. You can almost always find some not quite as lightweight alternatives to try out hiking and camping, then build up your kit as you gain experience and desire to trek further.
      Also, don't discount kit because it's cheaper. I've started using a Trekmates 30lt pack (possibly only a UK brand) that weighs 500g and cost me £30 (18oz and $40): Alpkit do something similar. Of course, if you're just starting out, your gear may not compress quite so much, so perhaps a larger (but not too much larger) pack may suffice.

    Dan stopped by to pick up 2 Kokanee that I smoked this morning. Ted and his nephew caught 15 between them. I smoked 11 in my Traeger after wet brining them overnight. Turned out delicious.
    I hope you'll both be here for Resurrection Sunday.
    My ankles are bruised and swollen, a brick fell on one, and a large container of frozen water hit the other. Ted refroze it but forgot to move it away from the door, so he felt awful. lol
    Love and hugs to you and Joyce.

    Question: How often do you get to talk about God & Jesus while hiking or at camp? #2. Do you pray while walking?

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  2 месяца назад

      #1-Two things I DON’T talk about on trail…politics and religion. I have strong convictions regarding both. I will answer a question if asked but I’m not going to argue. I would rather focus on what UNITES us instead of what DIVIDES us.
      #2-Yes. I spend a lot of time with God while hiking. That’s why I prefer hiking by myself. I often say, “When I’m by myself on trail, I’m never alone.”

    Good Q&A video. Definitely good advice on familiarizing yourself with your equipment before a trip. 😂 I see in your video description that you don't do gear reviews. I am inquirying to see if you would be interested in reviewing my AT thru-hike book. I haven't done the PCT, but I did get to hike to half-dome. The views were stunning.

    Sit ups are useless exercise that died in the 1980s. Squats, planks and countless other ways to strengthen your core. Sit ups basically just mess up people’s necks and backs and don’t do much for the core. Stop doing them.
