" They come here because it's Unique , and then they want to get rid of the " Uniqueness ". The best statement to describe what happened to my beloved Austin. I sure do miss it.
I was only 16 when this was made, just starting out in my bands, ended up playing on some of these same stages, but I only had about 7 years left in Austin, before I finally escaped... but I cant watch this, seeing these places that were home to me, and some of these people whose faces I knew or even was acquainted with, just brings up these feelings of something lost, some kind of terrible nostalgia... I wish I could go back to roaming these streets again... night in Austin back then was so magical, the sounds of the nighthawks and the whippoorwills, the oaks and the moonlight towers...
Thank you for uploading this! Talk about seizing a freaking moment, Daniel Johnston's performance in this is a real life miracle. David Thornberry talks about how being on MTV was Daniel's dream. It's really nice to see the footage in context. RIP Daniel Johnson, one of the greatest.
I was class of '84 at Austin High- (The Big Boys played at our 'spring thing') and in '85 I was playing in a 3-piece called "Psychic Flush", at venues like The Beach Cabaret
Thanks for uploading this, I saw this as a 15 year old in Houston and couldn't wait to get to Austin, when I got there in 1989 the music scene had shifted quite a bit to white funk bands and sub butthole surfers unfortunately. A great snapshot of when it was still a college town.
Alejandro!!!! 46:30. Recently listened to his WTF interview and he characterized his 1 album with True Believers as a toxic experience. Still sounds great to me.
The bands on this show were not the good ones, just somewhat popular. What were the good ones you say? Sixteen Deluxe, Sincola, The Naughty Ones and The Hickoids come to mind
I like all the bands you listed... but this was taped in 1985. The only band you mentioned that existed in 1985 was the Hickoids, and I think they weren't playing much because of line up changes. I wish someone had created something like this for the '90s Austin underground scene... So many great bands
I think most of the bands were shot at either Liberty Lunch or the South Bank. Liberty Lunch is legendary... The South Bank was only open for about a year
@@ChrisGatesATX The South Bank Bistro was an upscale offshoot of the Beach Cabaret, which was an incubator for many of these bands. Today the South Bank is vacant, after having been the restaurant Zax for a few years, catty-corner from the former Threadgill's World Headquarters. The Beach is now the Crown & Anchor Pub, around much longer than its predecessor. Liberty Lunch was demolished for a tech office next to the new Austin City Hall.
Emos closed years ago and they tore down Liberty Lunch and residents started complaining about noise on 6th St…oh Austin you break my heart. Saw so so so soo many great shows in Austin over the years though, many good memories
@@ChrisGatesATXwhen I first moved to Austin in 93, I heard ads for Liberty Lunch on the radio and several friends talk about shows there. I was so naive I thought the bands played in the afternoon (like the Beatles had at The Cavern). Saw many great, memorable shows there. That area of town seemed so desolate at the time. This is back when KGSR was still KGSR, KNNC was on full swing. Sound Exchange and Inner Sanctum were open, Les Amis was still around. It felt very similar to the Austin captured in Slacker.
you don't miss this place, the vibes the music, the experiences, you miss BEING YOUNG~!

its a thing. people leave places that are shitholes, and they end up turning wherever they land into shitholes as well.
perfectly articulates the issue

My God, Kathy McCarty and Daniel Johnson are so young.
So amazing that Daniel was the highlight of this whole video. Love it.

Daniel Johnston rules!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap! This is fire! The 80s were so much fun. I still have my Joe King Carrasco vinyl albums.
50:50 Daniel Johnston - my broken dreams
This may as well be outtakes from Slacker lol. The vibe here and from that movie are similar, you can tell they are from the same world
I just noticed the drummer in Glass Eye is the guy from Slacker who's trying to get the girl to come to his show.

Don't mention the most successful act out of this whole video, Timbuk3, playing an awesome track not on any of their albums

Can you please tell us the names of the clubs?
