  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined Tom Swarbrick to discuss HS2, the 'old consensus' and targets to build new homes... which he says the EU is obstructing.
1:10 | What does this new consensus understand that the old consensus doesn’t?
2:04 | Is HS2 the ‘embodiment’ of the old consensus?
2:38 | The ‘facts have changed’ on HS2
5:39 | The politicians who have spent more time campaigning for change than actually delivering it, are Conservative ones.
8:12 | How long have you been working on the Network North plans?
9:33 | ‘Was that included in error…?’: Tom asks Sunak why he is promising to deliver on projects which ‘already exist’
12:46 | ‘You’re running the country and you haven’t built the homes that you said you would’
13:27 | ‘So the EU are stopping us building homes?’
15:30 | What does the PM make of the criticism that Margaret Thatcher would be ‘turning in her grave’ regarding new plan for smoking restrictions?
17:30 | The best tax cut that the PM can deliver right now is to ‘halve inflation’

This is a big fat lie. I have worked in architecture and construction since 1994, and have done hundreds of Planning apps all over the UK.
In all my years of experience, nobody in the industry has ever mentioned the EU.
If you think the EU determines planning and build reg applications, you need some basic civics tuition.
Look at the ONS figures, average 60k more homes were built per year when Labour were in power.

I live in France and I see the quality of homes built for those wishing to get on the housing ladder, and they are by law built to very high standards with regard to insolation and eco requirements. Probably the Conservatives are attacking the EU because they want to build houses to high standards and the housing cartels in Britain want to build cheap houses for first time buyers to make bigger profit margins. These cartels are large donors particularly to the Conservative Party so have the influence on when and what type of houses are built and sit on land packages for years to increase the value. In France you have a short period of time after construction plans are accepted before you have to make a meaningful start on the construction, or the planning permission may in certain circumstances be removed. The only ones that are allowed to sit on parcels of building land are the local authorities who may set aside land for future housing for population growth. Normally here you can buy a piece of land and then pay to have a house built and you pay in sections during the house construction, and because of the rising costs some villages in France are offering plots of building land to young people starting out at reduced prices on the understanding you live there for at least 10 years. Here there is no shortage of housing or house building which keep prices at an acceptable level, whereas in Britain the main building program has been for high end housing with a high profit margin. Also here in France rich people will not be able to swoop into costal areas and grab houses that may only be used for 1 month a year without now paying very high taxes... Something the Conservatives would find a nightmare.

    • @jacksat2252

Yep , a lot of similar standards here in Belgium,.
From the moment your have your building permission you get a amount of time to execute those works(that is only for exterior work , inside the building has no limit)) Last week a guy who was restoring or remodeling an old house was getting a small fine every month the works weren't finished.
He payed them every month with no worrying about it,, that went on for a couple of years until this month he got another and this time ithe fine was over 120 000 €.

I walk in Carnac during the winter months and most of the houses are shut up for the winter. And as in the UK like in Cornwall the locals can no longer afford the houses because of the prices going through the roof, and at least the French are trying to address the problem whereas in the UK the attitude is 'so what'

    • @richardhowlett4097

That is absolutely correct. The builders, like Persimmon Homes make huge profits, and where do the profits go? The CEO took a bonus of £110,000,000.00 this year, which he states he worked hard for! working 48 weeks of the year, is £2,291,667.00 per week, that's £458,333.00 per day or £57291.00 per hour. No one person should be allowed to pocket such obscene amounts for sitting behind a desk and issuing orders. The builders are requested to build a certain amount of high end houses and less than half of that figure that are classed as affordable houses. Guess what? They complain that it isn't economical enough to do it. Then, the are permitted to build even less affordable houses.
