147. Wilbur Schramm's Model of Communication

Wilbur Schramm was an American Communication Scientist. His book 'Mass Media and National Development' was widely appreciated. He propounded his model of Communication in this particular book in 1954. In his model Schramm focused on the elements ; Encoding, Decoding and Feedback. More specifically he introduced a new element 'Field of Experience'. In this video all elements of Schramm's communication model are being discussed in detail for the benefit of students.

The Circular Model of Communication, also known as the Osgood-Schramm Model of Communication, was introduced by Wilbur Schramm, an American communication scholar, in 1954. It built upon the ideas of Charles Egerton Osgood. Osgood was an American psychologist and professor at the University of Illinois, is credited with popularizing the notion that communication is circular rather than linear. Later, Schramm refined this concept in his book "The Process and Effects of Communication," where he added the notion of the field of experience. The Osgood and Schramm model is bilateral, interactive, and circular in nature, and frames communication as a two-way negotiation of meaning, rather than a simple exchange of information.
