I have just started listening/watching your videos in the past couple of months... I’ve loved a lot of them but this one is definitely my favorite!! I don't think everything about us is bad or wrong. God wants us to keep our individual identity. This is the crux of the message of Jesus. We are made in his image and have intrinsic worth.
All Things Aggro Hey there! I really appreciate you listening to the lyrics and commenting your thoughts! I would challenge your thought on the crux of the message of Jesus being that not everything about us is bad and that God wants us to keep our individual identities.
For starters:
No one is good--except God alone. Mark 10:18
Also:
None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands, no one seeks for God. All have turned aside, together they have gone wrong; no one does good, not even one. Romans 3:11&12
and...
[we] were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Ephesians 2:3
and finally...
For whatsoever is not from faith is sin (Romans 14:23)
Meaning that apart from a savior (Jesus Christ) there is literally nothing good in us--we do nothing by faith meaning that everything we do is sinful and that by nature our identity is that of wrath.
The ONLY thing about us that is good is God inside us--and it appears to me that God is looking to completely eradicate our natural identity for the sake of literally saving us from ourselves.
We all have the same identity--we are what God says we are. Now if you mean individual personality... then that is different--God DOES make us unique, but, if I were to guess, I would assume the author's intent towards saying "'till all of me is gone" means everything that is his "old self"...his "old nature of wrath"... WHICH technically IS all of him (considering the text we read up top)... so I personally think it is theologically accurate and appropriate to ask God to rid of everything in me that is bad... which is everything lol.
Anyways... I'm curious to hear your thoughts:) thanks for reading if you've read this far:)
Thought I would throw out there that I went to youth group with your brother!
But, I would also challenge your verses. Not to offend, but those were proof-texted. I am not claiming that we are without sin. But I am claiming that there is something within us that is very very valuable to God.
We can agree we are God's creation. Beyond that, we are made in the very image of God. Some Jewish Sages during the time of Jesus said it was like a minted Roman coin that bore the image of the emperor. Jesus bought into this same idea during the Second Temple Period. Jesus was a Jew who partook in Jewish ideas of the time. Why do we love our enemies? Because even they are made in Gods image.
The image of God was so strong in the message of Jesus that when we help another human being, it is as if we are doing it to God himself. Jesus told parables of giving cups of water to people in need, but when we do it it is as if we are doing it to God himself. The Jewish humanism in the message of Jesus is very strong. We should be wary to not let Martin Luther and his reformed theology distort the historical message of Jesus.
Even in the greatest commandments we can see the Jewish humanism of Jesus. Other Jews during the time of Jesus did not use theology to interpret the Torah. They would use language. Notice the similarities in language in the two greatest commandments? LOVE your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. And LOVE your neighbor as yourself. Many Jewish sages during the time of Jesus would take one abstract verse and interpret through a concrete verse that was tied linguistically in the Torah. How do you Love God? You Love your neighbor as yourself, because they are made in the image of God and bear infinite intrinsic value imbued by the creator. Many Jews during the time of Jesus took part in what we call the Fourth Philosophy: These were people who thought they needed to take the kingdom of God back by force. Jesus taught against this because he knew if you kill a non-Jew you are smearing the image of God. Like smashing a coin so you can no longer see the emperors face. Doing this would smear the image of God on each of us.
So yes, we do have infinite worth without Christ. Without being saved.
Mark 10:18 --> Jesus is rejecting the cult of personality that other Jewish people did to many other messiahs. Jesus did not want to be some great person who everyone made much of. Think of the mega church culture we have today. This was very much the same in the New Testament. I.E. I am of Paul or I am of Apollos. Are you of Bethel Church or Hillsong etc.
Romans 3:11--> I would challenge the common Protestant view on this verse (I am a Assemblies of God Pentecostal myself), if Paul really thinks no one was good then why did he lie? He says in Galatians that he never broke the Law and lived it perfectly.
Romans 14:23--> With all of these verses try to use them in the greater context of their chapters. We cannot isolate verses, I could really make a compelling logical argument for the most horrible things if we just isolate verses in the Bible. I believe in grace, but be careful that you do not marr the divine image.

The Jewish perspective on the New Testament trumps every other hermeneutic or interpretation method. Why? Because it uses pure fact and history to interpret the Bible. Its tangible. Martin Luther knew nothing of Ancient Judaism. He also did not have access to the Dead Sea Scrolls.
All Things Aggro with Danny!? That's awesome! Your thoughts are all very valid and I agree with them:) The irony is that the image of God in us is the only thing good about us...and again showing the only thing good inside of us is God Himself:).
My concern is not ever in thinking God does not perceive humans to have value, but when people think that there is some good inside of them apart from God.
