Imagine the emotion during the last mass in Aghia Sophia since they all knew the city was doomed to fall. A long, ancient chapter of human history was about to be closed...It was really a last stand. Honour to Costantine XI for choosing to fight among his soldiers till the end. And by the way i think he was smart enough to give away his boots to another soldier before the final charge. They never took his head, his body confused with other common soldiers.

@Dragon Dimosthenis I m Catholic and i apologize to all of my Orthodoxe brothers.
The fourth crusade is a trully shame, WE have the same faith in GOD, The Holly Trinity ans le course in Christ, the Messi.
Sorry for m'y ancestors , I hope Orthodoxe will forgive us one day, and de will reunit oursleves as the blessed time of the first Christian.

@Dragon Dimosthenis The Patriarche or Rome is my Patriarche so I "Obey" to him but of course I consider with the same respect to thé others Patriarch.
But you didnt undetstand what i said. For me the way to have the unity of all of Christians ( those who believe in the Christ and in the Holly Trinity) is the Christ and our faith in Him.
PS: to proove you that we consider the others Patriarch with the same respects, Vatican had say that Catholics can go to orthodoxe chruch for the messe...
PS: I know well History and dont think that Catholics are the only gulty... But I dont want conflict between us, WE have the same faith in GOD, so WE have to be reunifate ( that not mean that we need to have the exaclty same ceremony...)
Please these evenings pray God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of David and all of the Prophetes, the true God, pray sincerely to know what toi have to do, as I do
So if God want, try to convince your orthodxe brothers, as I do with my Catholics brothers
And if God want it, one day we will be Christians brothers...
      God bless you

Pope Innocent III reaction to the sack of the City:
To Baldwin, Count of Flanders and Hainault
You took upon yourselves the duty of delivering the Holy Land from the Infidel. You were forbidden under pain of excommunication from attacking any Christian lands, unless they refused you passage or would not help you (and even then you were to do nothing contrary to the wishes of my legate). You had no claims or pretensions to the lands of Greece. You were under the most solemn vows of Our Lord-and yet you have totally disregarded these vows. It was not against the Infidel but against Christians that you drew your sword. It was not Jerusalem that you captured but Constantinople. It was not heavenly riches upon which your minds were set, but earthly ones. But far and above all of this, nothing has been sacred to you-neither age nor sex. In the eyes of the whole world you have abandoned yourselves to debauchery, adultery and prostitution. You have not only violated married women and widows, but even women and virgins whose lives were dedicated to Christ. You have looted not only the treasures of the Emperor and of citizens both rich and poor, but have despoiled the very sanctuaries of God's Church. You have broken into holy places, stolen the sacred objects of altars-even including crucifixes-and you have pillaged innumerable images and relics of the Saints. It is hardly surprising that the Greek Church, beaten down though it is, rejects any obedience to the Apostolic See. It is hardly surprising that it sees in all Latins no more than treachery and the works of the Devil, and regards all of them as curs.

I wouldn't say that, in the first crusade many of the people risked losing their lands to go on crusade. And it wasn't like they were planning on taking any lands (besides bohemond) since they all vowed to give any captured lands back to the byzantine empire. Only after they felt betrayed at Antioch did they brake the deal, and even then most of them simply returned home rather than try to take any land.
Besides bohemond there was no evidence that earthly desires were the motive. And if it was then they did a terrible job at it.

    • @JP-rf8rr
      @JP-rf8rr 5 лет назад +97

      @Jonathan Williams
Oh there was most definitely risk of losing their lands.
You leave your lands (which were surrounded by rival rulers) and have a subordinate run things while gone and hope he doesn't steal your lands.
This actually happened to Richard the lionheart, his younger brother tried to steal his kingdom while he was gone. This sort of thing happens all the time when medieval rulers leave their kingdom. And they weren't stupid, they knew the risk.

I see the fall of Constantinople as a lesson about life. Take nothing for granted in the world. Everything, even the things that seem mighty can be lost. Constantinople had been sieged 10 times before 1453 and had stood through the latter 9 of them. Even after the sack of 1204 the Empire rose again and the city survived. Perhaps that is why no one sent aid in great abundance or tried to relieve the besieged city. After a thousand years I am sure everyone thought Constanines city would always be there. And then it wasn't. And even if, as is the dream of many Christians, the city was taken back for Christendom again, it wouldn't be the same city that fell in 1453. That city is gone. What stands now is the fully Turkish Islamic Istanbul. Which hardly has any reminders that it was once the seat of a great Christian empire. So cherish all that God gives us in this life. For everything if finite. Like Solomon's temple, Constantines city, and Eden, some things are gone from this world forever.

God sent a sign to the monk who was praying for Constantinople to be saved. The sign was a hand holding up five fingers... Meaning that the city will be saved if at least five true Christians still remain in it. The corruption associated with empires affected the great city too.
But after so many centuries of suffering and after the sins of the Turks will fill the cup, Constantinople will be returned to Orthodox Christians again and we will hear this Greek chant in the Hagia Sophia

There are also hundreds of folk songs (laments) from every corner of Greece and beyond, for the "Fall of the City of Cities" as being called.
From my place, Halkidiki, Northern Greece, there is one called "Simenei i Thios". Simainei i Thios, simainei i gis, simainoun ta epourania...
    In free translation:
"God is signing, the earth and celestial too,
Agia Sophia the great monastery is ringing (the bells)
with 400 semantra (wooden) and 62 (metal bells).
In every bell a priest, beside every priest a deacon.
The King is chanting to the left, Patriarch to the right,
and so loud was the psalm that the columns of the temple were wobbling.
While they were ready for the Cherubic hymn and the King's exit,
a loud voice came from the sky, from an archangel's mouth:
-Stop the Cherubic hymn and lower the hexapterygs,
you priests take the holy relics, and candles go off!
Because it's God's will for the City to be turkified.
Send letter to Francia (West), to send 3 ships,
the first to take the Holy Cross, the second the Holy Bible,
the best of the three our Holy Altar,
in order not to be dishonored.
The Virgin Mary was disturbed and from the holy icons tears were running.
    - Please Virgin Mary (Kyra Despoina), stay silent and stop crying,
once upon a time there will be ours again..."
Well, these are the lyrics, which are quite panhellenic in different variations, from Pontus, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Greece, even from Magna Grecia in Italy and some from the Balkans.

Islam isn't a semetic myth, adding myth in front of the world religion doesn't mean sh*t. Atheists think they are too smart for religion. What arrogance. And no, the best thing to happen for the turks was their conversion to Islam. Which helped transform you into one of the most powerful and advanced civilizations in history, the same thing happened with the Arabs. But guess what, what the west has done is not progress. In a world where the 20ish year old Alexander could conquer the known world, our 18 years old worry about failing their exams. Goddamn, so much progress! But you know, I think that this somehow hinders us as people and keeps us stuck somewhere in the past. I'm not Greek neither Chrisrian, but the lament made me so emotional and felt sad as if I'm from Constantinople. No doubt it was a great city and great Empire, but that's history. Nations rise and fall. It doesnt mean that we have to keep thinking that someone stabbed us in the back and we have to revenge. I mean what made Constantinople great was it's people in that time, but also it's people somehow became weaker and lost it. It's not that Greeks now or Italians are weak and it's their fault, because they are different people. I mean you weren't living in that time. It's the history of ur ancestors but you live now and you should make your country good. Not necessarily to be the same as Constantinople because nothing can be identical to something else. And the faith you talk about, well I think it's in your heart whether you are living in Greec or China or even another planet. It's yours. That's why I think what matters is the human where ever he/she lives. Human dignity should be the number one priority and based on how much such dignity respected, countries greatness should be measured.

George Sprantzes - The Fall of the Byzantine Empire 1453 primary source from the war.
Constantine Palaologus XI speaks before his officers and allies before the final siege of Constantinople by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Bey
Most noble leader, illustrious tribunes, generals, most courageous fellow soldiers and all loyal honest citizens! You know well that the hour has come: the enemy of our faith wishes to oppress us even more closely by sea and land with all his engines and skill to attack us with the entire strength of this siege force, as a snake about to spew its venom; he is in a hurry to devour us, like a savage lion. For this reason I am imploring you to fight like men with brave souls, as you have done from the beginning up to this day, against the enemy of our faith. I hand over to you my glorious, famous, respected, noble city, the shining Queen of cities, our homeland. You know well, my brothers, that we have four obligations in common, which force us to prefer death over survival: first our faith and piety; second our homeland; third, the emperor anointed by the Lord and fourth; our relatives and friends.
“Well, my brothers, if we must fight for one of these obligations, we will be even more liable under the command strength of all four; as you can clearly understand. If God grants victory to the impious because of my own sins, we will endanger our lives for our holy faith, which Christ gave us with his own blood. This is most important of all. Even if one gains the entire world but loses his soul in the process, what will it benefit! Second, we will be deprived of such famous homeland and of our liberty. Third, our empire, renowned in the past but presently humbled, low and exhausted, will be ruled by a tyrant and an impious man. Fourth, we will be separated from our dearest children, wives and relatives.
“This wretch of a Sultan has besieged our city up to now for fifty seven days with all his engines and strength; he has relaxed the blockade neither day nor night, but, by the grace of Christ, our Lord, who sees all things, the enemy has often been repelled, up to now, from our walls with shame and dishonor. Yet now too, my brothers, feel no cowardice, even if small parts of our fortifications have collapsed from the explosions and engine missiles, as you can see, we made all possible, necessary repairs. We are placing all hope in the irresistible glory of God. Some have faith in armament, others in cavalry, might and numbers but we believe in the name of our Lord, our God and Savior, and second, in our arms and strength granted to us by divine power.
“I know the countless hordes of the impious will advance against us, according to their custom, violently, confidently and with great courage and force in order to overwhelm and wear out our few defenders with hardship. They attempt to frighten us with loud yells and innumerable battle cries. But you are all familiar with their chattering and I need say no more about it. For a long time they will continue so and will also release over us countless rocks, all sorts of arrows and missiles, like the sand of the sea. But I hope that such things will not harm us; I see, greatly rejoice, and nourish with hopes in my mind that even if we are few, you are all experienced and seasoned warriors- courageous, brave, and well prepared. Protect your heads with shields in combat and battle. Keep your right hand, armed with the sword, extended in front of you at all times. Your helmets, breastplates and suits of armor are fully sufficient together with your other weapons and will prove very effective in battle. Our enemies have no and use no such weapons. You are protected inside the walls, while they will advance without cover and with toil.
“For these reasons, my fellow soldiers, prepare yourselves, be firm, and remain valiant, for the pity of God, Take your example from the few elephants of the Carthaginians and how they dispersed the numerous cavalry of the Romans with their noise and appearance. If one dumb beast put another to flight, we, the masters of horses and animals, can surely even do better against our advancing enemies, since they are dumb animals, worse even than pigs. Present your shield, swords, arrows, and spears to them, imagining that you are a hunting party after wild boars, so that the impious may learn that they are dealing not with dumb animals but with their lords and masters, the descendants of the Greeks and the Romans.
“You are well aware that this irreligious Sultan, the enemy of our holy faith, violated for no good reason the peace treaty we had with him and disregarded his numerous oaths without a second thought. Suddenly, he appeared and built his castle in the straights of Asomatosso he might be able to inflict daily harm on us. Then he put our farms, gardens, parks, and houses to the torch, while he killed and enslaved as many of our Christian brothers as he found; he broke the treaty of friendship. He befriended the inhabitants of Galata, the wretches rejoice over this, as they are unaware of the parable of the Farmer’s son who was roasting snails and said, “Oh stupid creature,” etc. Well my brothers, since he started the siege and the blockade, every day he opens his fathomless mouth and is seeking an opportunity to devour us and this city, which thrice-blessed Constantine the Great founded and dedicated to the all holy most chaste Mother of God, our lad, Mar the eternal virgin. She became the Queen of Cities, the shield and aid of our homeland, the shelter of Christians, the hope and joy of all wishes to destroy this city, which was once proud and blooming like a rose of the field.
“I can tell you that this city mastered the entire universe; She placed beneath her feet Pontus, Armenia, paphlagonia, The Amazonian lands, Cappadocia, Galatia, Media, Georgian Colchis, Bosphoros, Albania, Syria, Cilicia, Mesopotamia, Phoenicia, Palestine, Arabia, Judea, Bactria, Scythia, Macedonia, Thessaly, Hellas, Boeotia, Locris, Aetolia, Arcarnania, Achaea, the Peloponnese, Epirus, Illyria, Lykhnites, the Adriatic, Italy, Tuscany, the Celts, and Galatian Celts, Spain up to Cadiz, Libya, Mauritania, Ethiopia, Beledes, Scude, Numidia, Africa and Egypt.
Now he wants to enslave her and throw the yoke upon the Mistress of Citie, our holy churches, where the Holy Trinity was worshipped, where the Holy Ghost was glorified in hymns, where angels were heard praising in chant the deity of and the incarnation of God’s word, he wants to turn into shrines of his blasphemy, shrines of the mad and false Prophet, Mohammed, as well as into stables for his horses and camels.
“Consider then, my brother and comrades in arms, how the commemoration of our death, our memory, fame and freedom can be rendered eternal.”

@Renan Uysal I think you're quite confused, mixing up mythology, history, culture...The Aeneid was written by Ovid if I recall correctly, just a fiction work which hasn't been proved to have any real basis.
Yes, they called themselves Romans, and the Ottomans knew them as Rüm if I recall correctly, but it was clearly a Greek nation. For instance, the Emperor was called Basileos instead of Caesar. Russia claimed that Moscow was the third Rome and intended to be the Roman Empire heirs, would you call them Romans? Would you call Romans to every modern nation which is the result of the dismemberment of the Roman Empire? Would you consider Roman to the Germanic emperors who took the title of Holy Roman Emperor?
Everyone has his own way of thinking, and mine is than Eastern Roman Empire wasn't really Roman but a Greek nation, seed of modern Greece.

O God, the nations have come, the nations have come
    upon your inheritance!
    They stained,
they stained your holy temple, Lord,
they set the carcasses of your servants upon the ground
as food for the birds of heaven
the flesh of your saints for the beasts of the earth.
They poured out their blood, O Lord,
they poured out their blood as water around Jerusalem,
and there was none to bury them
We have become, we have become a reproach to our neighbors
sarcasm and mockery to those round about us.
How long, O Lord? Again, how long, O Lord,
    will you be angry forever,
will the fire of your zeal burn as fire?
    How long, O Lord?
    Pour out your anger,
    pour, pour out your anger
upon the nations that do not know you,
and upon the kingdoms which do not call upon you by name.
Do not remember our lawless deeds from of old,
    but help us quickly

@Da Pacem Domine No, the west thwarted all subsequent attempts to liberate the Christians of the East, for example 1853, of which the "archbishop" Sibour said:
"The war which France is starting with Russia is not a political war, but a holy war; it is not a war of state against state, a people against a people, but only a religious war…The real reason for this war is the need to push back the Photian heresy, to bludgeon it and to trample it down; such is the open aim of this crusade; such was the aim of all the crusades, although the participants in them did not recognise it."

Love this chant and the Turks had a very hard time trying to take down the walls. The empire was heavily guarded by different archery infantry such as men from Thessalonica, Athens, Byzantine Guards, and Trebizond archers but include the men who used Greek fire weapons to destroy siege towers. Eastern Roman Empire is civilization. Respect from Mexico. When I look the Constantinople, it reminds the fall of Tenochtitlán, the most ancient city of the gods we used to worshipped them.
