      I have no Greek heritage, but I have visited the island of Crete many times. I went there originally as just another holidaymaker, but almost immediately I sensed the call of something very old and deeply rooted everywhere, in its rugged landscapes, its bays and coves, its old pine forests, its small farms and villages, its vernacular architecture, in its people, their faith and their daily lives. I was irresistibly drawn to return by that happy discovery, and since then the island has become for me a respite from the hollow clamour and the very unhealthy material excesses of this world. The Cretans are excellent conversationalists, even with basic English, and I can recall many chance encounters that left me with food for thought. I prefer to spend my time there in fairly simple ways, like hiking the countless trails, visiting the Orthodox holy sites, just plenty of time outdoors and - wherever I go and whatever I do - largely in a reflective frame of mind. If there is one indulgence that can be forgiven there, it has to be for their cuisine. Even then, it is not a pretentious or over-elaborated tradition, but founded on the fresh produce and ingredients won from terrains that are not always easy to work. Long live Crete, and may God's blessings always follow the Greek people wherever they are.

    This song is even more of a tragedy now, with the Hagia Sophia being converted back into a mosque. The memories of all those who gave their lives in defense of Roman life, must never be forgotten. I pray for the day the day my fellow Greeks embrace their Roman heritage. And come back to the forefront of the history books.

      The Hagia Sophia is sacred to all Christians, but especially to Greek Orthodox Catholics and Roman Catholics. This includes the Copts, the Ethiopian Orthodox, most Protestants and the Pentecostalists. The only exceptions might be some of the extreme Protestant cults, who verge on total heresy, and the dying mainline Protestant churches who have abandoned Christianity altogether to worship "the spirit of the times".

      @innosanto 4 года назад +6

      For many Greeks, and histirans, Constantinople is not only holy town, but our capital, the nations capital, the place where modern Greek nation was born in around 10th century, when Greeks started again to see that they are Roman but of a Greek lineage and heritage. This became even stronger in 11th and 12th centuries. Whereas in 5th-10th century therr was a period when Greeks thought their heritage was bad and demonic so Roman and Christian was what they were putting as first, since Greek started for 5 centuroes to be the worst thing,, and to be a heritage of Zeus and Greek religion adn that was not only demonic and bad for Christians but also dangerous since they were persecuted. After 10th century Zeus believers were killed or dead and Greek started to be used again as lineage if Roman Greeks. In In Constantinople and surrounding areas like Nicea it emerged first in around 10th century. And by 12-13th century even the emperor would stress the Greekness and lineage when writing letters to. The pope. .

      Orban (also known as Urban) was an iron founder and engineer from Brassó, Transylvania, in the Kingdom of Hungary (today Brașov, Romania), who cast large-calibre artillery for the Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The fall of Constantinople was the capture of the capital of the Byzantine Empire by the Ottoman Empire. The city was captured on 29 May 1453 as part of the culmination of a 53-day siege which had begun on 6 April.
      The giant cannon Orban built within three months at Adrianople played a key role in damaging the Walls of Constantinople in 1453.

      @Ion L. The Byzantines also caused a united kingdom of Italy (Ostrogoth kingdom of Italy) which was heavily romanized in culture due to Theodoric who was raised in Constantinople who came and conquered it to fall into well over 1,000 years of division. The Italian people lost their Roman identity, and now that they reunited recently people don't even look at them as the same people who inhabited the peninsula long ago and governed the once great Roman Empire. They are not Germanic, they are still the same as the ancient Italians, but the Byzantines caused a long period of weakness for them. I'm not trying to hate on the Byzantines but this goes BOTH ways. Anyways, I hope the Greeks work things out for Constantinople some day. There is one thing us Italians and Greeks have in common and that's patience.

      Christian Constantinople was a time of trouble and suffering for the city, the centre of the Anti-Semite Pope/Preacher John Chrysostom, the city where the Christians of other branches were killed, like Arius who was poisoned and died in a horrible way.
      After all these sufferings and corruption, there was hope. And the Hope reached Constantinople with Islam.

    When Hagia Sophia was reconverted into a Mosque, I fell to my knees and wept. This song is a good example for the sadness of many of us whose hearts and souls have broken as a result of this barbarism!

    I am Brazilian and Catholic since birth. Several times I came to this video to listen to this beautiful song about Constantinople and I think about what it represented and still represents for us (CHRISTIANITY). That, in these current times, we - Catholics and Orthodox - can think more about God and truly be brothers. That one day, for the glory of Christ, we can be one again: THE CATHOLIC CHURCH!
    For all the peace of Christ. ✝☦︎
    Είμαι Βραζιλιάνος και Καθολικός από τη γέννησή μου. Πολλές φορές ήρθα σε αυτό το βίντεο για να ακούσω αυτό το όμορφο τραγούδι για την Κωνσταντινούπολη και σκέφτομαι τι αντιπροσώπευε και εξακολουθεί να αντιπροσωπεύει για εμάς (ΧΡΙΣΤΙΑΝΙΣΜΟΣ). να είστε πραγματικά αδέρφια. Ότι μια μέρα, για τη δόξα του Χριστού, μπορούμε να γίνουμε ξανά ένα: Η ΚΑΘΟΛΙΚΗ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑ!
    Για όλη την ειρήνη του Χριστού. ✝☦︎

    We never forget, we never forgive. Our souls would never rest in peace till we take it back. It's what we created and fought for more than thousands of years. We are the kids of the Holy Roman Empire and I am proud as Greek that our culture and our spirit kept alive this heritage till the end. I have a deeply connection with all Roman brothers even if we fought each other.

    As a Serb, there is two big events in 20 centry for I deeply regret. First one is that Greece didnt take Constantinople and lands in minor Asia in 1922 and I feel so sorry for 1.500.000 Greeks that needed to refuge from minor Asia where they lived for centuries! That was last chance to take back Constantinople before it was transformed in todays ugly and urban Istanbul, just look what they did to that city. Second event I regret is forming Yugoslavia with other countries after Serbia liberated them at the end of WW1,and 70 years later they all stabed us in back,Yugoslavia was big mestake made by Serbian king. But I feel more sorry for Greece and Constantinople, our holy city! Greece you are not alone, whole Ortodox world is with you! ☦️☦️☦️

      Тако је, прежалосно што велике силе нису то дозволиле, осјетиле за сходно. Тад је била задња прилика заиста, и Грци су дуго водили рат. Од милион људи нема их ни 1500 у Истанбулу. То је њихово Косово, као и ишчупано срце цијелог православља, нарочито балканског. Еџ, шта рећи за Југославију... Преварили су их, нису велике силе дале. Знаш да су заузели Скадар и драч, морали напустити, и брже боље створена држава Албанија. Притисли су их да дају Бугарима југоисток Србије и Македонију за коју су крварили, нису могли на то да пристану, да би добили проширење на Босну и можда дио Хрватске (тј.Аустро-Угарске, јер Хрватска као таква није ни постојала). Али што краљ Александар није дозволио федерацију или конфедерацију, и градио уједињење према истоку и југу, са православнима. то је грешка. Ови чим би се отцијепили, Италија и Аустрија би их растргле. Њега и убише кад је почео да гради тај балкански савез...

      Yes. And also we can feel sorry for the daughter of the Serb Duke killed on the battle field in Kosovo and who was married shortly after to the new Sultan Bayezid by her boot licking brother eager to be recognizlsed as King by the Devil Worshipper Bayezid.

    One of the sad things is that Constantinople had been weakened over hundreds of years by attacks from the Knights Templar of all things. The force brought east to fight the crusades ultimately helped weaken one of the most famous cities in all of human history. In addition to the Ottoman Attacks. Brother against brother.😞 The eastern style of music is truly one of the most emotional styles and that adds to the story they tell incredible emotion, and feelings. Very beautifully sung Ms. Nektaria.
