Sarcasm aside. Being an European feudal peasant in the middle ages was an atrocious, uncertain, fragile, back-breaking life. All semblance of joy, smothered out by systemic, dogmatic fear and normalized, needless violence. Still better than living in present-day California
All semblance of joy suppressed? No. This is just wrong. Have you heard of feasting? That's been a tradition since ancient times and the medievals were very much into partying after labour. There were a lot more holidays as the Church made feast days of saints to balance work life. There are even records of secular music and a lot of which is publicised thanks to David Munrow. And although peasants worked less than modern day Americans, they did do manual labour.
Historians have been trying to push against the pop-culture understanding of medieval times for some time now. Medieval peasants had hard lives but that was in large part the nature of manual labour and a lack of defences to disease. They were largely conservative, religious and content, they had very strong social institutions and believed the structure of society to be divinely ordained, they were heavily legalistic and had jury trials, they had multiple power centres competing with each other which made tyranny in practice infeasible, the elites of society were just like them heavily moralistic and had an expectation of duty and service being the price of power. They had the most progressive treatment of women in the world and a great sense of humour and lightheartedness, they had rich cultural traditions and respected local perticularism (so long as it wasn't perticularism of religion). Without modern luxuries and disease prevention modern people almost certainly wouldn't want to live but then but it was certainly very far from how it is commonly depicted and thought of.
Outside of medicine, what do we have that's better than what they had in their lives? They paid less taxes than us if you're living in Europe, for better services provided by the feudal lord himself, they all lived together in numerous families when they had to have each other's backs, and the world has always been (and is still today) a dark place. They also ate better than us, lived a happier life than us because of the toughness of their lives, that brought them together against death and violence. You could also chose your lord and your loyalty in France for example, even if it was seen as profoundly dishonorable to switch sides. It was done when the lord was doing poorly for their people. I'd rather be a feudal peasant in the middle ages, than living in my shitty flat, giving half my money to corrupt governments working on stealing money away from us while giving nothing in return, working in a factory for people who don't give a shit about my health, in a modern system where no money equals you and everything you ever owned and done disappearing. Bonus points for the fact people believed in God more, making them more prone to good social behaviours for Christianity outside of a few bad apples, instead of the egotistical way of living of so many people of today.

Sarcasm aside. Being an European feudal peasant in the middle ages was an atrocious, uncertain, fragile, back-breaking life.
All semblance of joy, smothered out by systemic, dogmatic fear and normalized, needless violence.
Still better than living in present-day California
you think we are being sarcastic?
It may have been hard and tough, and dangerous, but they lived, while modern men of today, for the most part, don't.
