    I don’t think the shaft breaking is a lack of maintenance. It could have been a small hairline crack that split apart when Andy crashed into that massive wave of a wall that even washed out the captain’s wheelhouse windows. Hitting that wave could definitely snap that shaft if it had a weak spot that developed 🤷‍♂️

    No matter how bad the situation, you've got to have a plan B. Sitting still and dwelling on a lost prop won't work. A shaft was two weeks out. Another 7-10 days for repairs. Nearly a month. Season will be over and whatever is in those pots will have died. Can't blame Scotty for trying to salvage the season.

    He said "You say you're licensed but you're not a captain" before. Initially, when I first heard him say that, some years ago, I was thinking he was saying "You may be licensed to be a captain, but you have to actually become a captain to call yourself a captain." Now I agree with the guy. Maybe there's a deeper reason why he says "You're not a captain."
    With this clip, I understand. He had bigger issues to deal with than quota. The bigger issue being his boat was out of commission. Every season will miss quota with the boat being out of commission, so his more important priority at that moment was to get the boat running again so that he can stay in the fishing business, in general, for the long haul. Not just try to save this one particular season.

      They arnt cheap. The prop for the tug I work on is $130k. It’s a 9’ diameter stainless steel 4 blade ice prop, my grandfather bought it for the tug in 1993 from Khalenberg. Even a new prop for my own tug is $12k and it’s only a little 36” 3 blade. Prop for one of my smaller boats is $8k and that’s a 26”x22” Khalenberg

    • @TugboatMatt
      @TugboatMatt Год назад

      That would be all in with the cost of haul out and work. It’s not cheap to haul out a vessel this size. It costed us $12k to have our 65’ tug lifted out of the water with a crane, as for a actual dry dock it costed us $35k just to put our 100’ tug in the dry dock, another $18k in labour for the dry dock crew that did the work like removing our prop, shaft, rudder and do a ultrasound on the hull, and it costed $1500/day to have the tug in the dry dock primarily to have the pumps running to keep the dry dock dry. (Worked out to be about $1000/day for the electricity for the pump to run and the rest for the wages of the dock supervisor to keep the pump running and for the wear & tear fee of the pump
