My Saab 96 was a beast it powered through the winters of the 70's making driving in a storm fun. The freewheel device was tricky but thanks to my friend Ken at North Country Imports in Queensbury, NY. I became a morning ice racer.Studed tires unstopable.
When I had mine my mechanic locked out the freewheel because it tended to be a weak spot with the V-4's, and not necessary with a 4-stroke engine in any case. The tranny was developed for a 2-stroke engine with half the horsepower. This is a lovely example in fine shape!
I'm in love. I had the wagon inn the 70s. The free wheel control is bang in the middle on the floor. Handle pull is in the middle on the floor. Next to to clutch.
It might be because that arrangement is inherently unbalanced. The V4 Taunus engine required a balance shaft to damp out vibration. My first car was the 95 (wagon version of the 96) and I loved it. No other 4 cylinder engine had that sound when it ran.
There was a lady in my neighborhood who continued driving a 95 until she was no longer able to drive, well into this millennium. Her son would find and restore another for her when the old one became unserviceable. She loved the cars, and had a lot of fun with them.
Are the white-sided, 50s/60s style tires an inspirational after-thought by the owner, or was a 1973 model car really exported from Sweden like that? I have never seen such tires on a 1970s car here in Sweden.
They are just white wall trims they fit around the wheel and lay on the tyre but look like white walls. We have put them on lots of cars as much cheaper than white wall tyres and look awesome. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F323576021506
Beautiful car, hard to believe they made these up till 1980
One of the most fun cars I ever owned...amazing during the winter
Hiya. I'm a big fan of the 96. What was it like to drive in the snow? Reliability?
Cheers
Had a 95 for 20 years, terrific car, great fun and hugely reliable and I miss it like mad !
Nice to see an old SAAB. You rarely see these even here in Sweden nowadays.

It's just such a pleasing, organic, pretty shape.

And this one is IMMACULATE and beautiful !!!
Not sure what catches my eye more; the classic Saab or the immaculate yard!
Stunning!
Great cars with V4 Ford engine!
What a pretty little car 😊
1.5 or 1.7 litre? Later versions used the 1.7 (1,698 cc) engine.
The fee-wheel is in the transmission not in the hubs.
Thanks for sharing this beauty!!!if ever 1 or the one above it comes along keep.me posted!@
you can change from free wheel if you want.
And, why?? Really!? No, leave that be! 45 MPG is no Joke!
lovely example nice plate too
That V-4 is extremely compact-wonder why other makes don't use this configuration today?

@@CarrotTownGarage Thanks, and I learned something!
I like it
Column shift space saving
Oh dear, so many people don't seem to care for tyre kickers! I suppose the only ones who really get a kick out of them are the tyres.
SAAB= Super Auto Amour Beaute'
Svenska Aeroplan Aktie-Bolag (Swedish Airplane Corporation)
i wishd id had 296s
the one that got away
I had to sell mine, worst mistake..
nice
How sad they placed the steeringwheel on the wrong side : )
😂😂😂
As you can see, it's on the RIGHT side. Sweden changed from wrong-side traffic to right-side traffic in 1967. :-)
Superficial
Not made in China!! Either!
Gumtree
Pauline Ground Gumtree?? I don't understand?
My Saab is better because it has stripes and spews smoke.
