All of these things are true, but we stayed at dozens of KOAs on our cross country trip and enjoyed almost all of them. Easy choice as a member, get discounts, shoulder season meant not too crowded. And a relatively good level of service at almost all of them.
The sites are close together but most campground are. What I have found is that most people only stay 1 or 2 nights on their way somewhere. The staff is friendly and I love the shop and the food. It’s neighbors that can make a good or horrible stay.
Like you have mentioned about the cost. Whenever you hear the name KOA, you automatically know that it was gonna cost a penny. And I will say that I haven't seen any difference between non KOA campgrounds then KOA camp grounds.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. I tend to agree. But It seems like the private campgrounds not using Campspot and not on the KOA system can be cheaper. They tend to take cash or you'll need to call them to take a reservation. Is that something you have noticed?
Look in the video description it’s actually three separate campgrounds that we’ve been to and enjoyed staying at. Thanks for asking and have a great week!
I admit, we have stayed at several while using our TT over the course of 7 years. They are conveniently located if you are traveling for a pit stop once in a while. But, they are expensive. We recently stay in one while traveling in the midwest. It was over $70 for one night. We try to avoid them, if possible.
Koa serves a purpose on my travels. I like them for convenience at times. I know what to expect. I did stay at one for the whole summer. I did not like being so close to my neighbors. My neighbors changed almost daily. No camaraderie! However, the koa came in handy when I knew I was dealing with a dead battery on my truck. The truck required a jump twice on the trip and auto zone was very near if I needed it. Koa brought out the charger. Would you believe it took 30 minutes to charge up? So I needed the extra help at the koa I could not with a planned night of boondocking. My way of saving at koa is to get a water and electric only site. I can dump at the station as I exit.
There's nothing that makes KOAs worse than any other campground. I use them frequently and they are easier to schedule than mom-and-pop private campgrounds. Most KOAs have a wide variey of prices depending on the site, they list the most expensive ones first.
That is true. you do get the immediate sticker shock of the highest price and then have to scroll lower to see if there is a site at a good value for you. I also agree that their website is really useful. I like seeing campground maps and KOAs will always have one to understand the layout.
KOA Campgrounds Were made for Tents Back Then And They Never Updated them to Camper vehicles Other Than That They Are A Place To Go If You want Tent Camping Good ole Fire pit fire and Cookout And Sleep or just watch the Stars Great Stay And Cheap With Tent❤
Cost to much i stay in New Mexico 2019 for 5 months was 675. A month the next year jumped to 875. In 2023/2024 1600 a month full hook up and cable thats it. Not camping there anymore

good advice. thanks for sharing!
Most of the KOA'S are mom n pop owned campgrounds that were built back when people didn't have 45 foot rigs being pulled by 25 foot vehicles.

Those are good observations. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I lived in my teardrop camper and spent 4 months at a KOA Holiday. I loved it. Wish I could go back.
I NEVER camp at a KOA or any campground that is this crowded. Quite frankly, if I can see you, you are too close. Give me the wilds.

We always use koas when traveling but now some not all koas require a 2 night stay. Not on holiday weekends but all the time.
We have them here in Canada too but they are completely outclassed by our provincial parks.
Some KOA's cost more than a motel depending on the area.
