Thank you Sir! There is a lot to explore on this channel. I've made 20 or more axe videos so far about lots or different handmade carving axes from all over the globe. About to dive back into my northern Ontario canoe trips... So it won't get monotone on here. I appreciate the support.
I live quite close to the town where the original viking axe find that the Stefan Rönnqvist is based on was found. Never knew about it until I got into carving. Will try to go see it at their museum when Im able to.
Max you did an excellent job presenting this axe. The cons were mentioned along with the pro's...good for you. I have enjoyed many of your presentations and will own one of the axes very soon now!! Really well done!!!
Thank you very much for the feedback. I do make a living in this field but that doesn't mean I'm not staying honest and keep my integrity, after all, this isn't supposed to just be a sales channel. Thanks again.
Thanks for this video Max. Ive been trying to decide which carving axe to buy. I intend to order the Wayfarer soon. As a new carver I use wildlife hatchet but it’s time for something more specific and special.
Used the wildlife hatchet for my first few years. Honestly... I wished back then I had the same little, compact, punchy axe in a more suitable head... And the Wayfarer is that head. You would absolutely love it to bits.
Hi Max here from land of THE SLEEPING GIANT. 🇨🇦. Nice to see your happy face,,Thanks for the positive vibes. Great looking axe. Thanks again. Cheers Mate.
They are currently not available but I got several updated versions for preorder on my website. Actually with a 10% holiday discount right now. Woodsmansfinest.com
Right... I don't know what it is with the Ukrainian way of heat treating 52100 bearing steel but my forge and Maksym are just getting it right everytime on each tool I got. Knives, axes and gouges alike.
I just got this axe and agree with pretty much everything you said, I'm glad I got it before this video otherwise there may have been a waiting list. 52100 is my favorite steel, it is well known for it's edge holding ability.
52100 is the steel to beat... As you said. The edge retention and toughness is wonderful for what we do. The price adjustment was a necessary step with the higher demand and higher production cost due to staff and paying good wages. It is still very competitive and the turnaround time of all my Ukrainian axes is very fast and working with both forges has been professional all the way.
@@quakerlyster very fair of you mate but it is all good. I have no issue being transperent about all that because I have profound reasons for all the way and why I do this. I appreciate the talk mate.
It's a beautiful axe. If I was a collector, I'd want one. Thanks for the video! Will you be making more knives...? What knives I've seen on your webpage are very nice.
It is a fabulous craft and carving axe too otherwise I wouldn't present it. Thank you for the kind words. Yes there are going to be more knives shortly.
Thank you! Browse the channel as I am very honest about the pros and cons of all of them. My own recent designs and these ones available all from my website have the best steel and quickest turn around on the market. That I can guarantee
I have been looking at that axe for close to two years. What I like about it is the big upsweep (did they increase the curvature?). I think that, like most people, I have a tendancy to aim as my target with the middle of the axe; therefore a big upsweep in the front allows me to have a nice sliccing action. I also like thin axe because they make better sliccer. You also pointed out the two elements that have me hesitating: the weight and the large distance between the edge and the handle. Like you were saying, I am one that crave for the use of mythic tools, I don’t need an other axe but I still have two of them in my vue. That Wild Fields Forge is one of them. By the way, I would really like you to review the little finnish carver axe from Kharkiv Forge. I am very curious about that design. For me, it address the problem of the distance between the edge and the handle. Unfortunately, it seems heavy. Thanks for the fantastic job you are doing.
Great points all over buddy. Niecely written. I've designed an equivalent of the axe you are talking about with Svarogych/Kharkiv that will be available in a few weeks. Yes... The weight is an issue if you aren't used to the right technique. I think that this can be a great axe in a combo with a second one as it was done a lot. I'd recommend you to have a look at my 800g Jounreyman and especially the 600g Wayfarer as options if you like the heat treat but aren't sure about the balance and accuracy... Those axes are 100% designed by me and I've gotten nothing but happy reviews by nearly 100 people who bought the axes in the last 4 months.
Thanks for the encouragement. People think I just wanna sell stuff but when you go back through my carving axe series I am the only one really trying to talk about proportions, balance, steel and compromises of designs. Thank you for stopping in.
@@woodsmansfinest3814 glad to help. No one is forcing them to buy your products. To my knowledge you are the only one who has studied and/or can express the technical aspects of carving tools. Outside of a few others (Nic Westermann, Alexander Yerks come to mind). You've definitely furthered my knowledge, thank you.
@@hillbillynick2000 there are tons of very knowledgeable people out there and I am really by far not the most informed and knowledgeable compared to the very old irons but I also took lots of time out of the last few years to build a connection to tool makers I call friends now, forged my own knives and tools to understand the subject matter better and also worked with people knowledgeable about tools on 3 different continents and so I'd say I at least got some stuff to share. Thank you for the support.
Just to say; is the forge not "Wild Fields Forge", not "Wild FIRE Forge" as you have in the video title? Not sure if titles can be changed. I am loving your videos. Thanks so much for your work.
I'm planning on buying an axe from them as my first good quality one, and I thought I'd seen every RUclips video of Maksym's work (most of them in Ukrainian which I don't speak), so I was surprised and delighted when I was working my way through your videos and this one happened to pop up. You really allayed any second-guessing I had about choosing to go with him.
