Been a while since you uploaded anything, I really hope it just ends at you not feeling inspired and not anything severe. Love your work, Sean, even if you haven't uploaded I still watch your videos and listen to your shanty very often. You've truly left your mark.
It’s not even a shanty AND he’s bald! We’ve been tricked, backstabbed and quite possibly bamboozled! Seriously tho I’m so happy to see this return to Shanty of the Week. Will this be a permanent thing or is it just a one off?
@@SeanDagher please update us! Your voice is incredible! I met you as "that one guy's voice on Black Flag's soundtrack that just grips at the heartstrings." Hope you come back soon!
I've got some confessions to make too: 1. I haven't been here in a while, like a few good months.. Glad to be back, though; 2. This shanty shouldn't be the kind to be called "beautiful", I think, but the dark note it has makes it all the more beautiful to listen to; 3. I dig the shiny look! Let the sun make your head a beacon of greatness and your legendary mustache make you a Baron of Shanties! So it shall be.
Love it! It seems like “Go to sea no more” might be a (later?) variation of this song, don’t you think? In that version, he joins a whaling vessel rather than a navy ship.
I also have to make a confession, sean. I really like the style of this performance. Just your voice, a nice melody and the banjo. I hope you will post more like this song, with its little melancholic tone.I keep coming back to this video quite frequently (to all your videos, to be honest. Loved the shanty of the week) Hope your doing alright, this Video already is more than 6 months old now.
@@SeanDagher Well i am happy for you that you get to share your music live with the people and then enjoy a pint of beer. Safe travels through Scotland!
Sean, your work fills me with inspiration! I've loved the sound of shanties since I was a kid, and you capture their spirit in a genuine way. I recently wrote and recorded one myself, and I'd love a way to send it to you, if for no other reason than to thank you for the guiding light. If you've got 4 minutes to spare, tell me how best to get you my song. Thanks for everything!
I love your arrangement - so simple and powerful. Great use of syncopation. Your voice is truly lovely. I am very much enjoying your shanty of the week. Do you ever join in zoom Shanty Sings? There’s one on Saturday out of London
Hello Mr.Dagher i have a request if you still feel like uploading/making anymore these shanties but if you do, would like to see a william taylor cover :)
@@SeanDagher depending on how old he was in black flag, I’m guessing like mid-twenties, he would’ve been about 70 in rogue, and kept his youthful baritone
Howdy man new subscriber here and my man let me just give you some mad props, Shallow Brown is one of most beautiful songs I've heard preformed in a video game. You have a voice from the gods.
Always sing the shanties I learned from you in my work and this has been one of my faves for a long time xD I play a bit of guitar and if you have some tabs for this I would defo learn it
There's an unfortunate degree of truth to this song. Press gangs were used by the Royal Navy mostly in the 17th and 18th centuries to crew their ships during a period when recruitment did not yield nearly enough men. The gangs literally consisted of groups of armed navy men who roamed waterfront towns, legally forcing men into service by almost any means. While deserters and merchant sailors were the typical targets, the gangs occasionally pressed landsmen into service as well. The lines where the song's narrator asks about the treatment aboard reflect the fear and uncertainty that would probably accompany abduction by a press gang. Once aboard a ship, the "recruits" were indeed subjected to the absolute power of the captain, enforced by disturbingly harsh punishments, including flogging as described in the song. In my experience, impressment in the royal navy tends to be overlooked, both in song and elsewhere, while impressment, and more often shanghaiing, involving merchant ships tend to be recognized more often. Songs like "Liverpool Judies," for example, offer an account of shanghaiing. However, I've not heard many songs that mention impressment in the Navy. Perhaps the lack of songs on the subject reflects the impressed crew members' fear of punishment for singing songs that might have been considered rebellious.
Wait you're bald? well that is just to much! Who cares that you have a wonderful voice and that I am thankful for all these songs. I just can't get over the bald truth.
Bald?! How dare you. Also, the concert with La Nef and Chor Leoni is still probably my favorite thing to watch or listen to barring most. Now to know it will be put into album form is amazing news 🍻

As I walked out on a London street
The press gang; there I chanced to meet
They asked if I would join the fleet
Onboard of a man’o war
Boys, onboard of a man’o war
Said aye, brother, shipmates tell me true
What kind of treatment they give to you?
That I may know before I go
Onboard of a man’o war

Well the first thing they did
They took me in hand and they flogged me
with the tar & the strand
Kept lashing me till I could not stand
Onboard of a man’o war
Boys, onboard of a man’o war
Then they hung me up
By my two thumbs
And they flogged me
till the blood did run
and that’s the uses they gave to me
onboard of a man’o war
Boys, onboard of a man’o war
Well I had a wife, and her name was Grey
T’was her that lead me to shocking delay
T’was her that caused me to go away
Onboard of a man’o war
Boys, onboard of a man’o war
But if ever I get my feet on shore
To see those London girls once more
I’ll never go to sea anymore
Onboard of a man’o war
Boys, onboard of a man’o war
