Surly Moloko Bars on Trek FX3

- Bicycle handlebars are a very personal decision and I've stuck with the factory flat bars with bar ends on the Trek FX3 until I had the opportunity to try out a free pair of Surly Moloko bars. My buddy, Jerry, removed the bars off of a Surly Ogre that he had and replaced them with butterfly bars, so he offered them up to me to do with as I please. I decided to give them a try on the FX3 but it required a few modifications, one being a shorter stem to accommodate the longer reach of the Moloko. So ordered up a 60mm stem from Amazon and mounted everything up.

Just purchased a trek 7500fx and plan on converting it to a gravel slash bike packing bike! Thanks for the video
Thanks, I have one on my 2012 Salsa Spearfish. I put wine corks in the 'horns' to extend the grip. I just taped them so it is kind of ugly, but love it. Thanks for the hint on a shorter stem, I'm 79 yo and my back can get sore after longer rides. I'm actually thinking about one for my Trek Rosce 27.5. I just love the bike, gearing for me is great and since I don't do downhill or getting air is a mistake, might be a great addition.
I just found your channel and I love it! So informative! I have subscribed. Blessings to you.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hey Captain Bob. Like the look of the new bars. I see the benefit of the extra space. Looking forward to the next review and what additions you make to it. I agree with doing some wrap in those areas you mentioned.
Off the subject I wanted to mention I recently got the new revelate mag-tank 2000. Figured you eheard of that.
I remember when you reviewed the original version of that bag. I have that one too as it’s been a favorite but I was always wishing it was larger. You’ll have to check it out if you get a chance. Can’t beat that closure system.
Thanks for your time with putting these together and setting us up with the links! Been a while and need to follow you more. Too many you tubers!
Hey Edge! Thanks for watching! I have seen the new mag tank although I've not pulled the trigger on that yet. I do like that closure system as well. It looks spacious!
Nice bar ends I like those.
I put a set of those on an 09’ MTB I just use for cruising now, I absolutely love this handlebar…!!!
Right on!
Ortlieb bar bag on the Moloko handle bar! We all can dream!
Do it!
I am about switch from moloko to jones (710, double butted aluminum). like seeing the topics you cover. now fitting for the the correct stem length for my body and medium ECR. going to remount the moloko bars on an Ogre that now has Ritchey ergo drop bars, bar end shifters. for fun, some years ago I mounted bar end shifters on the aero bar tips on the moloko set up. it was brief fun! would work with second set of brake levers if one spends a lot of time in 'aero mode'. thanks for your posts. helps me get past the 'choosing point', and act on it.
Sounds great! Keep us updated!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Appreciate you watching!
Nice bars Capt. 🤣👍
Thanks buddy!
You could put the old handlebar above the moloko to showcase the difference quite easily. 😁
Looking forward for updates!
Ha! True! This is why I need you all to continue to school me 😂
Thank you. Very useful
Glad it was helpful!
Cut the ends of an old grip and stick Em on the end of the bars that stick out in the front. And they make a nice little grip for when you're riding extended.
I had a set of these specked when I had my Ogre built last year. Ok but got hand problems so I went to a set of MTB riser bars with bar ends - again ok but a bit too far the other way (If that makes sense!). I have just fitted a set of Koga Denham bars which are, in my humble opinion, a sort of middle ground in terms of geometry. You get a nice wide bar so lots of control, a middle ground sweep plus a centre position with less sweep (The wider your bars the more sweep you should have - ask a bike fitter!), a good 'hood style' position and finally, I can use my Ortleib bar bag with them. I just love them. No numb hands, no back pain and no having to fork out for a dedicated bar bag - just my experience.
I've had several people lately mention the Koga Denham bars and agree they look good. I've not had a chance to try them but they do look good to me as well. I've currently been using the Jones Loop SG 2.5 with the 2.5 inch rise with success, but I'm definitely keeping my eye on those Denham bars!
@@BradBeaird Update - loving the Koga Denhams - as I guessed they are a halfway point between flat bars and Moloko style. My mate loves his Moloko bars (He bough them not realising I had taken mine off!), but the Denhams suit me and I still have my bar bag - win win!
nice, there are some Ergon grips specially designed for handle bars that angle back like this one. Would be curious on pics with the Ortlieb Ultimate bag. Thanks
Yeah not sure how well this will work with the Ultimate bag with the bar overhang.
Awesome “quickie” on this topic! I think ... a reviewon that phone holder would e helpful
Yeah I did that review a few years ago on the Delta phone holder. I’m pretty sure that review sold a lot of phone holders for them haha. In fact...they should send us a couple of free ones!
Cool bars. I just ordered a pair. I would lose the grips though. A similar style grip came on my Big Dummy and after 8 months I decided they were trash. My wife's Tern GSD has Ergon grips and I love them. They feel great.
I've been looking at the Egron's for a little bit myself. Thinking about the cork version.
Nice overview! About to add these bars to my Surly Pugs! Nice looking channel too, I cover a lot of bike (fatbike focused) topics on mine channel as well. Subscribed!!!
I'll check it out!
I recently put Jones Loop H-Bars on my 2013 Trek fx 7.3. They are great, a bit wider than the stock flat bars but so much easier on my wrists.
All these handlebar conversions need a much longer stem....I run a Trek FX3 with trekking bars and need the stretch a longer....140mm stem gives me...Otherwise you are actually shortening your frame size...Mind you I use my bike as a tool for exercise and not a girly ride around town....
Great video! Thank you. Do you think the Jones H-bars would work as well as these Moloko bars?
I do think the Jones Bars would be good on there as well.
Hairspray for grips will eventually wash out in wet weather. Clear spray paint works much better, but you'll probably need to cut the grips off.
Lock on type grips make lots of sense and they're not much more expensive. My favorite grips are Ergon.
Good to know!
Do you prefer these, or the Velo orange crazy bar?
How are you getting on with these 1+ yrs later? I am interested in them, but they have a bit more sweep than I am looking for.. I ride mostly gravel but also do some single track.. curious to hear if you are still liking them or have moved on to something else
They are ok still but I’ve been riding a surly ECR with Jones bars more lately. Still love the FX3 for street/light trails though.
Any suggestions for road gravel bike handlebar? With flare, on which I can use the same shifters? A handlebar extender gives real estate but not flare.
Road/Gravel bike riders often like a drop bar style. One option would be the Salsa Cowchipper or you might consider also the Surly Corner Bar.
I would use the bar ends on the maloki bar
I'm looking to swap out my the stock handlebars on my 2020 fx4 with the molokos and I was wondering if this is an easy at-home task? This is my first bike with hydraulic disc brakes and shifters on the handlebars so is it as easy as disconnecting then sliding off/ back on? The guy at my LBS said I would need a torque wrench to put the brakes back on but I haven't seen any more information on this. Thank you!
This is totally a do it yourself project assuming your brake and shift cables are long enough to slide them off and back on the new bars. If not, then you may need help with hydraulic brakes/bleeding.
@@BradBeaird Thanks for the info! Put the bars on the other day...Like you mentioned though I felt too far stretched forward so I ordered a 60mm stem. It also feels like I could sit up more so I was wondering if I should get a stem with some rise? Would 40 degrees be too much? Or should I just get some stem spacers?
Wich one you think is more comportable jones loop or moloco,,, need ur opinion cos i haven't decided wc one ill buy
I have come to love the Jones Loop personally.
Good
I actually prefer the Koga Denham bars, which have bullhorns attached.
A year later, how do you like these compared to trekking/butterfly bars?
They are ok. I think the trekking bars offer more hand positions, but these allow you to more easily mount accessories and stuff.
Wowowee.. I like moloko.., free give :)
They are great bars
I have a fx3 2020 what kind of brakes or derailed are you using ?
Just factory
Brad Beaird thank you
How do you like the FX3
I love it. It's a great bike.
I want the Stingray Handle Bars so I can stand when going up hill. I have to replace all the cables is the bad part.
I’ve not seen those handlebars so I might have to take a look. All new cables sounds like work haha.
@@BradBeaird I just shot you over an email showing the Stingray. I put a couple other bikes on the email too. When G+ closed a hacker hit my computer and messed all my folders up. It takes a long time finding pictures now. If you look hard enough you'll see my bike has fenders on it to. That way you don't get the water stripe on your back when the ground is wet.
@@TheMonkeyrock77 Ah yes I've seen those bars in the old days. When you get it all together you'll have to shoot me over the final setup!
I wanted to buy one like this, moloko handlebar, I need some information thanks
Glad it was helpful!
@@BradBeaird d you know where I can find a moloko handlebar ?
@@abdellahoudmine289 www.jensonusa.com/Surly-Moloko-Handlebar sells them I know.
I made the same change to my rock hopper. Just for extra info, alcohol works better than hairspay. It leaves no residue.
True enough, although I know many that want the sticky to glue the grip in place and prevent movement.
@@BradBeaird I understand, but my grips don't move. It's a matter of preference, I've used both.
I don’t know if you have ordered one or if you already have one, but I don’t think the ortlieb handlebar bag will fit those bars
I have the ortlieb handlebar pack for bikepacking
Brad Beaird and they fit the moloko bars? I thought that the cross bar would block the bag. Were you able to stuff it in there?
I have the ortlieb bikepacking bag that is like a sausage roll that loads from the ends.
Oh snap. Ok. Good to know. How do you like that bag?
The bag is pretty good once you get used to it. I have gotten used to loading my tent in there with ease now.
How much ?
They are usually about $95 here in the US
Surly Moloko screwed up the bull horns. They should be bigger.
Those original grips were awful!
Yeah they are pretty mediocre for sure.
