  • Although I’ve taken my Surly Karate Monkey on a few short rides since doing a gravel conversion, I was finally able to go for a decent longer ride and get a better feeling for how the bike now rides. Winter is in full swing here in Montana, so my route featured everything from packed snow to wet pavement. If you have any questions about my set up or have a suggestion of something you want to see, leave a comment down below and be sure to subscribe!

    For some reason we cyclists want to define and then create “tribes.” It really doesn’t matter what people call your bike. Ride what motivates you to go for another ride as soon as possible! FORGET THE TRIBES & DEFINITIONS. Yay for bikes!

    I love the molokos on my Surly 1x1. Took to the hills this morning, and enjoyed the fading warmth of summer. You have to be hardy to go out when it's that cold. Brrrr. Good for you. Please be safe.

    The people complaining about non "real" gravel bikes are what's wrong with the world.

      Yep. The biggest gravel races in the country have a fat bike category.

    Looks like my world, NE Wyoming. And that is the mixed riding I love. Surly Bridge Club 27.5. I got the bike for dirt road touring. Putting a Jones 2.5 rise this month and fenders. Flat bar devotee with my back and preferred stance.

      Flat bars are great, I have no regrets going with flat/alt bars. I also considered the Bridge Club but I couldn’t find any in stock and it ends up being pretty close to my KM.

    The nay sayers just have tyre clearance envy! You're going to be able to fit some really wide and cushy road rubber on there come summertime.
    Looks like a real win with the Moloko bars too.... Comfort able and aero when you need that.😃

    Nice! We used our MTB back in the 90s for gravel riding. Nowadays people are so used to drop bar gravel bikes and not see mtb as a legit gravel bike

    • @saintless

      I've tried "technical" MTBing and personally hate it.. I just want to explore minging roads, fire roads, gamelands, etc. Old rigid fork MTBs are perfect for what I enjoy when I'm off pavement. Only appeal to me of a "gravel bike" is the mix of both but they're still more road bike than anything.

    Nice job, bud! I have an Ogre. Same bike as the KM essentially just with more braze-on for racks and bottle cages for bikepacking and touring. I call it my Swiss army bike. It's had drop bars, Jones bars, flat bars, 3"x26" tires, 29"x2.5's, 700x36 gravel tires. So versatile!
    Nice to come across your channel. I'm in the Dillon area. Love to ride the RATPOD route and sections of theGDMBR. 👍

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  3 года назад

      Nice to hear from a local! I considered something more touring oriented (Ogre or ECR), but realistically I don't need the braze-ons or the heavier tubing as I don't plan on loading it up often at all. I love a versatile bike though so most of what Surly puts out would work for me. I've already dropped this from 29x2.4 to 700x40 and now back up to 700x50. I'll look into the RATPOD!

    Have a 2015 Giant AnyROAD, I use a "moustache" bar, works great on unpaved paths. Not as stable as a flat bar , but more confortable on long paved trips.

    • @RideYearRound

      I considered the ECR, but I already run 29+ on my Ice Cream Truck so I figured this would give me a broader range in my bikes. Nice bike though!

    I have the truck stop bars on my gravel bike, really like them. Super wide. I have the moloko too, but don’t really use any alternative hand positions. I bet if you found wide enough drop bars, you’d like them. And a shallow drop too

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  3 года назад

      Yeah the trend toward wider drop bars does have me interested in them, but I still wonder how comfortable I’d feel on steep, rocky descents with them. I’m sure I’d get used to it after awhile though.

    • @mathias5171
      @mathias5171 3 года назад +1

      I use them on steep road descents all the time and feel very confident. A good pair of hydros goes a long way too, I have one hope rx4 up front and stock apex in back. Find that’s enough, but I don’t ride rocky like what you got. I’m @letsrideaustin if you wanna check out some Austin Texas trails and whatnot. Keep up the content, very cool.

    I don't really understand the appeal of gravel bikes, I think what you've done here makes a lot more sense than flying over the drop handlebars when the elastic bands they call tyres inevitably burst going over a pot hole. Having said all that, my idea of a gravel bike is something with 29+ tyres and 120mm of suspension at the front.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  3 года назад +1

      29+ is hands down my favorite tire size, but I do think it’s a little much once you hit pavement (I’ve done a few 20+ mile road rides on them). I’m sure I’ll end up experimenting with my ICT and put the rigid fork and maybe even these same bars on it to see how it does on gravel duty though haha.

    • @saintless
      @saintless 2 года назад

      My loose definition is anything meant for off road with a rigid fork in this decade. I don't understand the drop bar fad though and I'm convinced it's a fad that will eventually pass. I love drop bars but what's the point of a flared out hand position when my brakes are nowhere near by, that alone will keep me on flatbars when offroad... maybe if I did a cross style interrupter lever but at the flared drop section or something...

  • @mathias5171

    Hi. I want to buy new KM frameset and use it together with moloko bars. I'm 189cm so exactly between size L and XL. What do you think, should I size down to comfortably use moloko bars?

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  2 года назад +1

      I'm between Medium and Large and went with a Medium for this set up and it fit great.

    btw, would you buy a 27.5 wheelset with 35mm internal width for 2.8/3'' tires? I can't find any with 40 or 45mm internal

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  3 года назад

      I know a few manufacturers like Enve actually recommend 35mm for a 2.8 so although it’s on the narrower side I think you’d be totally fine.
