This song blew up right after I graduated highschool. I remember when school started back after we graduated and I was riding around town with my friends at like 1 o'clock in the afternoon thinking how weird it was that we werent in Class and this song would be on the radio..... "Duffle bag boy" by lil Wayne and playa circle was big at this time too.. the nostalgia is crazy.

I'm pretty sure a song about loving someone for who they are and not their money is relevant in any time period. Even in cultures and time periods where everybody marries for money or politics, there are always nonconformists who don't care about that. And they will of course write poems and songs about it, because people love to write about love, and people love to write about how they see the world differently from others.
Man, brings me back to late 2000's. In the club during my party days.
