  • The Pioneer X Alox was highly recommended to me by a lot of my viewers. The benefits to this alox knife is that you get more robust tools than you will get with a standard 91mm knife. You do lose the ability to carry tweezers and toothpick in the handles, but I think the slimmer design and the overall better quality of the tools is worth the sacrifice.

    I think it would be difficult for me to adjust to not having tweezers or a straight pin in the scales of my victorinox.
    So I did what any sensible person would do and I ordered a pioneer x.

    Placing the reamer on the end of the tool where it belongs is what makes this tool so appealing to me. The other SAK models with the tool pivoting from the middle is just awkward and plain dangerous in my opinion and is the main reason that has prevented me from purchasing SAK. Now if they could provide a locking saw blade on other models they would move into serious tool category.

    Thanks for the nice review. I just bought a second Pioneer X, which I will carry. The other will just be stashed away as part of the collection.The Pioneer X is a great one, and it could very well be my favorite, but I could also say that about the Farmer X. I have the Pioneer and the Farmer as well. For me, the Pioneer is a bit thinner than I am liking. For Suburban/Urban EDC, I would pretty much avoid any of of the knives that don't have scissors, because I do use them so much. While I think that I would pick the Pioneer X or Farmer X as my favorite if not in the woods, I could say that I could find some of the Cellidor knives that could qualify, but the only problem with those is that you can break scales, so I default to the Alox knives, even though you lose some options. Like you say, there are some tradeoffs you need to make at times and there is not one perfect knife. I think that the robustness of the Alox tools and scales often or nearly always make it the best choice.

    It’s a wonderful multitool in its own right, but it also makes a nice companion tool along with Leatherman Wave/Charge or Rebar. It has a nice awl that the Wave/Charge lacks, and a very good scissors that the Rebar doesn’t have. It has a non-locking knife that is also workable as your back-up knife. Can-opener and bottle-cap-lifter is more accessible than the combination in the Leatherman tools, and renders them redundant, if you ever need it. I happened to choose a Farmer X over Pioneer X because of the wood saw, and I didn’t intended it as a companion to Leatherman tools, but it doesn’t make a terrible burden when I consider it as one.

    It was this video that convinced me to get the Pioneer X Alox. The scissors were the deciding factor. Even if I never use the knife blade itself, just having the large scissors is a huge help.
    It may also be easier to justify carrying it in my (outside USA) country as opposed to a dedicated pocket knife like the CRKT Squid or the Kershaw Shuffle, among others. Despite wanting those as my first pocket knives, there is always the risk of losing them. And they do not come cheap.

    Ben, thanks for another great review. I really love this knife too. In fact it’s part of the alox holy trinity with the Pioneer and Farmer. Each time I watch one of your reviews I am inspired. I know you love the awl on this but I’d love to see that replaced with the wood saw from the Farmer. I recognise that might be challenging to do and still keep to three layers. But perhaps the bottle opener & can opener/flat head could be changed to the hybrid Victorinox uses in the Compact? That way it could just be possible to accommodate knife, scissors, and woodsaw too.

    I have the black one, it's gorgeous and very homely in my hand. Also carries very well on key sets because it is light and tidy.
    My version has no scissors hence it has no "X" in the branding. I don't miss them but what I do miss is a saw, I always saw stuff around the garden when pruning or walking in the park. For this reason I am going they will release an alox Hiker.
    I love my ranger 55 in wood, it has a GREAT saw. It also has a key ring but you would have to be Ted Bundy to carry that beast in your keys.

  • @Hamachingo
    @Hamachingo 3 года назад

    Ordered mine today. I keep pulling out the Huntsman out of the hiking backpack and it's just a tad too wide for the coin pocket and I already had to re-order the toothpick. The scissors are fantastic and the reamer should be greade for opening packages. I like to use the can opener for anything but can opening, it's a great prying tool so I'm happy it's a little bit thicker on the alox.
    Took me a while to decide against the Forester X. But having the Huntsman for hikes and moving the folding saw from the basement into the car really helped. Classic alox word for urban EDC, it just on the keychain, ready to cut and file.
    I wish they made an alox mini champ with more kid-friendly tools. Tiny screwdrivers for electronics, something to etch dirty things into wood, that kind of stuff. ;-)

    Good review, because you showed me 3 things I didn't know:
    - alox scales are thinner (no need for metal underneath, should have guessed)
    - blades and springs are sturdier than the red scale knives
    - how the 'wire stripper' is supposed to work, at last! Always thought "that ain't no wirestripper". Probably not great but at least I can try it now.
    Edit: still don't get it. On the thicker many-feature knives eg Ranger; Swiss Champ, the two position flat head with this notch is the full frame width (all the tools away) from the main blade, so the notch would only help hold wire against the blade on thin few-tool models.

    • @gabithemagyar
      @gabithemagyar 3 года назад +1

      That technique is kind of fancy. I think the original way of doing it was just to use a blade (the small one on most Victorinox knives would be handiest but the large blade works fine too) to score the plastic sheathing of the wire and then us the notch to help pull the sheathing from the wire. The notch saves you from cutting the wire strands which could often happen if, for example, you use a blade to pull the sheathing off. I used to use just a plain blade to strip wire for decades until I finally broke down and bought actual wire stripper :-)

      Another advantage to the alox as opposed to the celidor is that the liners are nickel silver, which is stronger than the aluminium liners on celidor models; this means they can withstand more torque and are more corrosion resistant.

  • @runthomas

    the farmer x is probably a better knife...but its another layer...
    so the best knives are 2 or 3 layers for someone who permanently carries one in pocket.
    and the real choice boils down to do i want a pair of scissors or a saw.
    scissors wins for me...when i usually need a saw, i tend to have a saw...and small stuff i can break, only thing is if i need to saw plastic piping...
    but when i need to cut piping its either in a house or on my car and i normally have a saw available
    so the pioneer x is probably the most useful knife there is that is pocket friendly 24 x 7 ...365...i love this knife and am going to buy it .
    farmer x is just a bit too thick.

    I think the soft blade steel of Victorinox is a widespread misconception. It is still steel. I had (and still do) a Spartan for more than 15 years. It was my only pocket knife and got a lot of use. I wasn’t into SAKs back then and took it for granted. Never maintained it or sharpened it and it was always in good shape. The only time I managed to dull the main blade was when I cut open a 5 liter beer keg to see how it works. And it was still useable after that, just not razor sharp. Naturally it was very easy to sharpen afterwards. I also prefer it for food stuff over harder steels as being so shiny makes it look more sterile clean.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 года назад

      I agree about it being an easy to clean knife. They are really easy to sterilize as well. However, there is no doubt that they are made from a softer stainless steel. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. As you mentioned, they are really easy to sharpen. I love Victorinox knives because their so useful. My SAK blades are backups for me as well, so it makes little difference to me what their steel composition is.

    Another good Cellidor scales option with scissors is the "Climber" model at only 3 layers. I find myself never pocket carrying a SAK over 3 layers. Anything over 3 layers has dedicated spaces. Can't go wrong with a Pioneer X in pocket & Leatherman Charge + on the belt. (Scissors are nothing special on any full size Leatherman)

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 3 года назад

      With alox SAKs the scales are slimmer so a 3 layer alox like the Pioneer X at 14.9mm thick is actually only a hair thicker than the Spartan at 14.5mm. There is a 4 layer alox - the Farmer X - with both scissors and saw and at 17mm which is the same thickness as the Super Tinker, the 3 layer celidor model with scissors but without saw.

    The Pioneer X is a phenomenal alox model. I don't understand what took Victorinox so long to come up with it, since they have the best scissors on the market. I'd be very interested in an alox model with the scissors as well as the wood saw (which would be equivalent to the 91mm Huntsman, except for the tooth pick and tweezers).

    Hey Ben, not that you have every single multitool (seems like you do lol) but would you consider the Victorinox Outrider for possible review?

      Yes, but you will only be engaging "half" of the screw head (if that makes sense)

    У мене є цей ніж. Його ножиці и шило це щось, я купив його лише через них. Шило легко робить отвори, я навіть пробурював наскрізь отвори у плитах ДСП, з яких роблять меблі.
    Я ношу цей ніж лише заради шило і ножиць)

    Look at Felix Imler’s videos and he shows how to sharpen the wire stripper notch into one that really works. Takes all of 10 minutes to do.

    Would this work as a companion knife for a wave plus

    • @c.r.5106
      @c.r.5106 3 года назад

      The Wave+ does everything this SAK does, but this SAK doesn't do everything the Wave+ does. If you don't need a saw, file, etc. then this SAK is much more compact and lighter.

      It's great as a companion for the Rebar or even Bond, both of which don't have scissors.

    It would make much more sense as a wire bender, than a stripper.

      E S It’s a much smaller knife than this, but I wish the victorinox midnight manager had a usb rechargeable light (those coin cells in the current version really kill it), along with that nicely integrated pen. For a lot of us, pens and lights are our most frequently used tools. So having them right on the keychain is a total win.
