Not from both points of view. NATO had no plans to expand and those Eastern European countries had no intentions to join NATO. But Russia started invading those countries one by one. Starting with Georgia then Chechnya. So all those Eastern European countries said let us join NATO. There's a monster at our doors about to eat us...HELP!! So Russia broke the promise by invading its neighbors.

I agree so far as to the agreement being made. I don't care if it was put in writing or not. An agreement is an agreement. BUT! The problem was that those former Sovjet States asked for membership. EU/NATO didn't ask them or invite them. They came to the EU/NATO! Tell me, what should EU/NATO have done? Say "no, cause Russia forbids us to"? And then those states would have said: "but Russia doesn't have an agreement with us, and we want to join EU/NATO". So Russia would hold the EU and all those former Sovjet states in a strange hold forever? Some former Sovjet states are further away from Russia than known EU/NATO allies like the Finland, Sweden and Poland. So why is he complaining about the former Sovjet States joining NATO and not about Finland etc? Should the EU have discriminated and only let states join that were far enough from Russia? Whatever is 'far enough' anyway. Sorry, but the complaint, however much I agree about keeping to the agreement from EU/NATO's side, is a false complaint, cause it just doens't make sense if there are multiple EU/NATO or EU/NATO-sympathetic countries closer to Russia than most former Sovjet States.
And Putin said that this war was a *desperate* move. But even if the EU countries agree about Ukranie joining the EU, which I very much doubt, it would have taken at least a decade, probably even more. So there was absolutely no hurry and therefore no * desperation* at all.
Abiding to rules and agreements is important, but may not be used as an excuse to rage war. Putin forced this without any reason to force it NOW. And ofcourse Russia/Putin is paranoid about NATO wanting to invading Russia. It's a DEFENSE Organisation.

I mean, FWIW, I think it's less of a betrayal than Russia invading Ukraine, given that Russia had a deal in place to guarantee their borders as they stood. Y'know, prior to Russia annexing Crimea.
But joining NATO wasn't going to be an option when Russia asked. They hadn't shown themselves to meet the minimum requirements, and it was very likely they could use NATO to get better military technology and veto any other country's attempts to join NATO.
Given that was the case, they opted instead for a NATO + Russia thing. A sort of "Okay, well, we'll see how this shakes out," allowing Russia and NATO to cooperate without giving Russia power over NATO. Many countries went through the same thing. Russia responded to not being able to immediately join NATO by... invading Georgia because they were trying to join NATO, too.
Yeah I think it's safe to say everyone saw Russia was insincere. They didn't meet the minimum requirements for joining and anybody joining has to get a unanimous vote in favour which, to put it bluntly, simply wasn't going to happen because many nations within NATO didn't trust Russia.
Russia has since demonstrated that they were correct not to trust Russia.

Given the rhetoric of open door policy of the EU and NATO its worth reminding all that on assuming Presidency, Putin requested membership of both to further demonstrate Russias wish to contribute and support mutual solidarity within the Continent. He was laughed out. Finally. The word annexation can only be used as 'gained by military invasion'. Crimea was NOT invaded at all. It was an electoral referendum by the population of Crimea. Russia and its military occupations by the Soviet Union. During World War II the Soviet Union occupied and annexed several countries effectively handed over by Nazi Germany in the secret molotov-ribbentrop pact of 1939. These included the Eastern regions of Poland incorporated into two different SSRS as well as Latvia became Latvian SSR Estonia (became Estonian SSR) Lithuania (became Lithuanian SSR) parts of Eastern Finland (became Karelo-Finnish SSR) Eastern Romania (became the Moldavian SSR and part of Ukrainian SSR) apart from the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and post war division of Germany, the USSR also occupied and annexed Carpathian Ruthenia from Czechoslovakia in 1945 (became parts of Ukrainian SSR). Russia has a long history of invading countries and still does it to this day. Russia hasn't learned a thing and Putin will keep doing this until he gets what he wants and that's rebuild the USSR. Putin worked counter-intelligence and was in the KGB until the fall of the USSR in 1991. Ever since then Putin hasn't dropped the Rock. Russia and China have things in common into that invading countries. Vladimir Putin is a tyrant and a warmonger. Russia like China they're also guilty of genocide. Ever heard of something called the Holodomor? The Holodomor which means (to kill by starvation) also known as the Terror Famine or the Great Famine was a famine in Soviet Ukraine the from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of innocent Ukrainians. It was a large part of the wider Soviet Famine of 1932 to 1933. The term holodomor emphasis the famines man-made and allegedly intentional aspects such as rejection of outside Aid, confiscation of all household foodstuffs and restriction of population movement. As part of the wider Soviet Famine of 1932 to 1933 which affected the major grain producing areas of the country millions of inhabitants of Ukraine the majority of whom were Ethnic Ukrainians died of starvation. It was a catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukrainian. Since 2006, the holodomor has been recognized by Ukraine and 15 other countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by Russia and the Soviet Government. So yeah they would do genocide to the Ukrainian people and leave them to starve to death. And if it wasn't that they would be shot buy Russian insurgence. So yeah I can see why the Ukraine and the other former Soviet states that are now independent nations of their own don't want to be underneath the thumb of Putin and Russia again. Ukraine is a free independent nation and Putin doesn't have the right to choose their future. The age of colonization is over. The world has changed since the 19th century and no country will abid by the use of force to take territory from others. Russia has a long track record when it comes to lying through their rotten teeth. Since NATO started dealing with Russia all they've done is lie they say they're going to do things but they turn around and do the opposite of what they said they were going to do. And Russia has broken treaties more times than NATO ever has. Putin needs to think of this fact. The more countries he keeps storming into and invading the more enemies he is going to make causing other nations to join NATO. So Putin's only going to expand NATO. The reason why NATO keeps breaking their deals is because that's all Putin keeps doing. And Ukraine wasn't planning on joining NATO until Putin annexed Crimea in 2014. It's actually very simple for Putin. Cease from invading countries, less expansion of NATO Russia says all they're doing is drills and Military exercises but their troops keep building up on the border day by day. Russia says they're not doing anything and not going to attack Ukraine at the border but Russia's one of those countries where the only way to believe them is if you see it with your eyes. No one will believe their words unless they see it happen.

What about Russia's point of view? Even after the mouth agreement, You can see from the report just how many countries which belonged to Russia have been swallowed into NATO. Ukraine's geographical position however, is too close to Moscow and Russia just can't allow it to join its adversary.

I had heard about this promise to Russia being broken, but hadn't looked at it in detail until now. Your maps definitely helped to illustrate the story and give a better picture to the viewers of Russia's potential concerns.
Personally it's an issue I struggle with, idealist vs realist. Of any country that deserves NATO membership, it's Poland, given its having been conquered multiple times over the centuries. At the same time, though, it would be naïve to not acknowledge that large countries do have spheres of interest and are sensitive to other large countries interference in these. The Cuban Missile Crisis is a key example of this. Plus, the West needs Russia as a counterbalance to China.

Therefore Nations that were not yet free could not have been promised by a third-party what their future associations would be. Putin also doesn't want the Ukraine to join the EU did somebody promised that without a a treaty? Why are these things up to Putin at all? The trouble is that THIS NARRATIVE ISN'T TRUE, regarding NATO commitments not to expand. Gorbachev says so; Yeltsin says so - Baker says so. There was NEVER any pledge that NATO wouldn't expand - because no one even considered it. There was a request not to station US troops in East Germany, only. If it were true, surely it would have been documented. But no - not anywhere.
NATO has expanded simply because Russia's neighbours fear Russia - with clear good reason. Invasions including Finland, Hungary and Chzechoslovakia - then after the end of the USSR, Georgia, Abkhazia, Transnistra, N.Ossetia, Tajikistan, Chechnya, Dagestan, Chechnya again, Georgia/S.Ossetia, N.Caucasus, Ukraine (2014), Syria, Central African Republic, not to mention the cyber attacks on Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, South Korea and Ukraine. Or the radiological/chemical attacks in the UK.
If Russia doesn't want NATO to expand, it needs to stop terrorising its neighbours.

@@jozefmasny8349 Except... That's not the case.
Literally nowhere does it say that Ukraine (or the other nations) should be neutral.
Indeed, its whole thing is "hey respect our sovereign borders, don't try to influence our politics, and seek immediate action should any of these nations "become a victim of an act of aggression..."
Russia broke that treaty, explicitly, first. The best Putin could do was to insist that his annexation of Crimea was totally okay because the Maidan protests were obviously a US coup. Because of course the moment someone you don't like getting into power means it's a coup by the other side.
... Even though the guy who was being protested had just done something incredibly controversial. Hmm...

@@DisgruntledArtist Well, looks like you don't understand the culture very much. In East Europe spoken deal is more valid than a written contract. In the West it's vice versa. That's the core of the problem, they see the validity of Reagan's promise very differently. For them, even Czech Republic and Baltic states are in NATO illegally. Look, I am on Ukrainian side, Putin is a madman. But try to understand how he was able to persuade Russian people.

    • @DisgruntledArtist
      @DisgruntledArtist 2 года назад

@@jozefmasny8349 Oh, I'm not arguing that he wasn't able to persuade the Russian people. His approval rating - at least somewhat recently - was still fairly positive even when accounting for inflated numbers.
Ultimately, though, the whole NATO promise thing was.. a bit flimsy, and because it was a verbal agreement it's not as if anyone except those who made the agreement were liable to be held to it.
*Especially* after Russia invaded Georgia. And conceded that Poland had the right to join NATO. And then you had the NATO Russia Founding Act saying "neither of us are allowed to make threats or use of force against any other state." Not to mention the whole "respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states and their inherent right to choose the means to ensure their own security"
Like, basically, no matter how you twist it, ultimately Russia broke more treaties, and more frequently, even if you want to assume that the verbal agreement was more important.
Honestly, though, I think even Russians are going to eventually realize that, rightly or wrongly, Russia is not a competitor to NATO anymore. TBH I just feel kinda sad for the Russian people, because Putin's actions are going to make life a fair bit less fun for the next decade or so.

Let’s ask ourselves the one question: Is it really worth it to go into conflict with Putin? I don’t like or respect the guy, but we need to sit back and ask ourselves what’s at stake.
It’s true that we betrayed our promise to Michael Gorbachev, the facilitator of the East-West alliance, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the list is long as we all know how Gorbachev’s openness changed the history of countries like Poland, Hungary, the Baltic states etc… We know that he was willing to respect the will of the people under the conditions that NATO would not expand eastward, something the Americans betrayed.
Let’s be pragmatic, how would we react, in the West, if it were the Russians pushing to expand toward our borders? Would we sit quietly with our arms crossed? I don’t have any love or respect for Putin, but I’m a pragmatic Norwegian, I’d like to see myself as a free thinker and not some sheep sitting and waiting to receive orders from the US, the most bellicose country on the Planet with their endless wars and invasions.. Are we going to continue in that path of the US war machine , just to please Washington’s ego and the weapons lobby ? Do we really need Ukraine to be part of NATO? What for? Are we ready to have a cold winter in Europe when Putin shuts the gas flow into Western Europe? Are our politicians going to pick up the utility bills when they’ll reach €400, €500 or more a month, just to please Washington and the Ukrainian president? Is it really worth it to go into conflict with Putin to keep happy the American war machine and the weapons lobby? Haven’t they done enough destabilizing and destruction in their wars against Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, their support to Islamists to topple Assad of Syria? the list is long to go on.. I’m afraid we are playing a dangerous game that could suck all of us into a serious quagmire.

People forget that the reunification of Germany occurred by treaty in 1990, when the Warsaw Pact was still intact. James Baker himself - and Gorbachev - said the "not one inch eastward" comment had to do with NATO member state troops stationed in Germany not moving eastward from the former border of East and West Germany. None of the leaders involved in the 1990 treaty ever thought of the Warsaw Pact disintegrating. Gorbachev himself later said "The topic of ‘NATO expansion’ was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a single Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991. Western leaders didn’t bring it up, either."
