  • Straight from the bright stages of Polyfest, 4 cultural guides explain an important element in their island's dance costuming.
    Liana Vaipa Rice explains the Niuean Hihi (shell necklaces). Meile Suipi Fakatava Latu explains the Tongan Lolo (coconut oil used in Tongan dancing). Pauliasi Bauleka and Nunia Turagabeci explain the Fijian facial dots (markings seen in Fijian dance). Ella Loheni Stancil explains the Samoan Tuiga (crown worn by the main Samoan dancer).
    ‘Cultural Refresh’ is a series that explores Moana cultural practices and taonga, presented for our new generations of young Pasifika people.

    Those little yellow bead things the niueans use is also found in parts of the Cook Islands and they also use it to make necklaces very similar to theirs

    I think this is an awesome segment, can you guys please showcase more of the various Pasifika cultures and their dresses and what they are called/symbolise/made of.
    This is very educational for alot of our Pasifika youth here in NZ who don't understand or are not taught about the different costumes that different Pasifika cultures wear.

    The Niuean hihi is called 'Sisi' in samoan, hence a garland is called 'ula sisi'.

      The hat thing, is a samoan traditional crown, called a tuiga fau or tuiga pūlou.
