- Richard here explains the design and usage of vintage tube limiters by Federal T.V. It was originally made for radio stations but he used it on many platinum albums.
Those Federals look like beasts!!! awesome thanks so much for posting them.
Ohh just see Richard is not there anymore.
RIP with good sounds!
Historically very interesting. Thank you.
just ordered the dizengoff 864. excited as hell!!
Fuse Audio Labs makes a great emulation if this. Pure magic on the bass and the mixbuss. Interesting to hear an expert talk about the real thing.
Would you mind sharing with me what the two modifications you made on your unit were? Looks like I’ll be receiving one of these units soon, but it will need a full restoration. Anything you could provide in terms of chips to have it functioning optimally would be terrific!
Where can we hear them?
Why then limiters so thicken the sound?
He died shortly after this video r.i.p :(
So the lower limiter has 3 dB gain? :P
(The needle wants to get out!)
omg i luv those racks
forty years in the biz and i have never seen those
really nice did u build them yourself
!
Hello thanks for the comment. Yes all of the outboard gear at Indigo Ranch had the wooden racks. I built them myself.
hI Richard!
thanks for this great review
What was wrong with the limiter?
Best!
I became aware of Japanese knock-offs in surplus stores in the mid 1960s. Many signal coupling caps, which looked like large rectangular molded mica capacitors, all leaked DC. (I wouldn't be surprised if leaky caps were the problem here as well.) I changed all of them, and it worked well until the tubes got old. (The variable gain tubes were 6SK7, still easily available.) It was my introduction to audio compressors, as I made a test bed of it. These days I would be more careful about matching the components, as was done in the Altec 436C, to minimize thumping.
"Extremely large" not quite. They used to be 10x that size and engulf an entire room, then and entire equipment rack, then an entire waist high rack, then 8U, THEN this :) ...... now a plugin
Over 7 minutes long, and it's just a video of him describing a compressor with one knob smh.
:D
