It's such a relief to hear that you didn't take Art alevel. It's a subject that seems to be the be all and end all of whether to study architecture. I am very interested in applying for architecture at university and I was worried about not being a strong candidate because I am not doing art a level
I just found out i got in!! Your advice was so helpful, and from my experience one simple piece of advice is by far the most important. The admissions people are not looking for a particular type of work (i.e. fine art, life drawing, etc.) if that is not what youre passionate about. From my observation the absolute most important thing is to present something that you can talk about with genuine interest, passion and enthusiasm at the interview. My work was all from 3d design a level, obviously no fine art whatsoever, and i couldve spent my own time getting together fine art (which i suspect they do generally prefer), but i would never have been passionate about it and thus it would not have done me well. Tldr: present something that you passionately believe represents YOU.
Hello! I take DT A-level, and i'm not the best at fine art either... do you recommend anything specific for a portfolio as someone that gets involved with CAD??
Bro you look young and your work is very impressive. I am 31 and just started architecture. And am always amazed seeing young guys with skills at this level!! Keep it going your a natural!
I see that in the UK they care more about the creative thinking of the student rather than the hands on physical models and projects developed like here in the US, at least Florida
For undergraduate admissions, yes, since we haven’t studied architecture at all before coming to university. For graduate and professional portfolios we would be expected to demonstrate the architectural projects, hands on models etc!:)
No way. I haven't seen anyone else who's done Maths, Physics Further Maths for A-Levels and applying/studying Architecture in university! This gives me hope!
Im not applying to Cambridge or anything but I really want to go into architecture and Im not the best artist and these videos done help :( but Im doing my best I am making an application for the college I am trying to get into now
I am doing GCSE art at the moment, I don't want to miss the opportunity for A levels. I was thinking of doing law but I want to do architecture. I want to love my job! I want to apply for Cambridge so much. 🥰
Well though we have only been here a few weeks, somebody on my staircase (i.e. one of my flatmates) actually studies law so feel free to drop any Qs about law and architecture and we can try our best to answer them!!:)
It is definitely predominantly an art-form and my degree is very much an education in design. Of course we need maths to know our buildings won’t fall down and there’s also a certain element of logical thinking behind drawings and understanding spaces. To me, architecture is most fundamentally about artistic expression.
It also DEPENDS on the school AND degree. Like how Bartlett have a master of engineering in BOTH architecture and engineering. It accredited by BOTH architecture and engineering governing bodies. Although it called a master degree it considered a UNDERGRAD degree. Since it is the FIRST degree before any other degree ( as in entry degree). And four years rather than one or two years.
Heyy love the video! I'm applying to St John's 🤞🏻🤞🏻. I've Been looking for a video like this for ages as putting a portfolio together is tough. Thank you!
Amazing video !!! Absolutely loved your portfolio and congratulations on getting into Cambridge !! Do you think having bad GCSEs will impact the chance of getting into Cambridge for architecture even if the Alevel grades are very good and portfolio is perfect :)
Thank you!! Honestly that’s one of those things that is almost impossible for me to comment on. Cambridge obviously care a lot about grades - it’s one of the things they can use to try and determine your academic potential. That being said if you have already done your GCSEs and received lower grades than you would have liked then there’s nothing you can do about it now really so I’d just focus on achieving as highly as possible in everything from this point onwards. I think it’d be wrong to say any one particular thing will either get you in or stop you from getting in and I personally believe that every little thing will have different weighting in everyone’s own application, especially to a subject like architecture where it’s fundamentally a design-based degree. I am by no means an official point of contact for the university however; if you are majorly concerned you could always email your college of choice’s admissions office and ask for their advice.
I'm about to choose my a level options, and think I may want to go into architecture in the future, as I love how it combines both maths/physics and art. However, I haven't done art GCSE and may not be able to do it for a level...how much do you think this would affect an application for architecture? Also, roughly how long did it take you to put together your portfolio, and how did you do this, whilst balancing all of your other a levels?
what subjects do you think as an Ib student we should take to apply for a good architecture program? do you think taking art in school is really important or can we make our portfolio outside of school also.

I’m in a similar position without even art GCSE in year 12 but with drawing ability, how long would it take to produce something of similar level, or should i not be considering architecture? Thanks
Hello, i am applying to UCl London for architecture. What is the ratio of writing to images in my art portfolio you recommend? I don't take DT for my Alevel but i do Fine Art, would you say this is a disadvantage for applying? Thanks
Well you can see the bits of writing I had in my digital portfolio - this was mostly as I didn't have an interview for the ones I submitted digitally so wanted to voice some thoughts. For my physical A1 portfolio, I maybe had a few notes here and there but obviously it is a portfolio of artwork so I personally thought the images were a lot more important. After all, you can always say things out-loud that you might otherwise write down whilst you are in the actual interview. As far as A-Levels are concerned, I took neither DT nor Fine Art and was still successful. I think that Fine Art would probably be more helpful to the work you would be doing at university, especially since UCL is known for being a very arty/design-focussed school. All of the necessary design/technical skills required to be an architect are usually taught as part of the degree so I wouldn't be concerned about doing DT from that point of view. Hope that helps!
I don’t take any creative subjects (I take physics chemistry maths and further maths) so I don’t know where to start my portfolio from. I didn’t take any creatives for GCSE either and I would say I am not good at drawing. Although I like paining landscapes using water colour. I would be grateful if you help me out!!

How long did it take you to assemble and make the whole portfolio and what did you do to learn the art techniques and develop them further as you said you did not do art a-level and gcse as i am in the same position
I spent a good month working on my portfolio non-stop every day since I was on a gap year and my education really depended on it! I certainly spent a lot of time drawing and being creative throughout my childhood anyway and I assume if you are interested in architecture you must have same vague creative interests in a similar manner too? It's good that you see it as techniques to develop - drawing is definitely a skill you can practice and improve like any other. Honestly the way to develop is exactly that - spend lots of time practising. I advise you practice specific skills at a time, eg learn to draw in perspective and spend a lot of time until you're happy then move on, or what I did was force myself to carry a sketchbook around and draw things from life as much as possible, for example.
I'm confused, your portfolio is absolutely amazing but where I'm from we enter project concept, plans, sections, etc. I love artworks. I have done loads of them but I don't think I can add them to my portfolio as primary ideas. Without the artwork, the folio seems more technical 🤔. What should I do?
Hi, I wonder if you are confused between university and professional portfolios? When applying to university (to architecture school) in the UK none of us have any experience in architecture really so the portfolio is expected to be entirely artwork. When we graduate and work professionally, the portfolio we would bring to a job interview is then professional work, ie architecture projects, concepts, plans etc etc as you say. What should you do? You should research what kind of portfolio you need for whatever you are applying to. I wanted to get into Cambridge so I looked for their guidance on what kind of work to show in my portfolio before I submitted it. For a job or work experience, I would certainly adapt this to include very different work.
@@CallumHenderson Thank you! It turns out I was confused about the type of portfolio. We don't have portfolios before starting University, we have examinations. I was looking for a professional portfolio.

Good luck:)
This video was super useful thanks. But does architecture have to only be about different types of buildings and interiors or can this be expanded to something else?
I don’t think the size of your paper will be the sole thing that governs the outcome of your application but I do think having it on the same size paper is a really good idea to make it easier for interviewers to flip through and I also think A1 is a great size for that since it’s nice and large!
Hello dear Callum, I’m studying Batchelor of Architecture in Iran at the moment, and I’m trying to apply for my Masters degree in Cambridge… my main concern is, would the fact that I’m from Iran negatively effect my application? And besides the portfolio, what are other entry requirements for applying to MArch…?
Against popular belief, I actually think they are quite different subjects. The deciding factor was really having the emphasis on creativity. In architecture, everything you do is geared around design and creativity. In engineering, you might use some creative thinking once in a while but ultimately it’s much more technically-focussed and maths-reliant.
Did you try Bartlett master of engineering. Which combined architecture and engineering. It accredited by BOTH architecture and engineering governing bodies. Although this is question is from three years ago.
Ooffff i will have my interview for college and i have no idea if theyre going to ask for portfolio so i just gonna make one just to be sure and ready .
I want to join a architecture college in abroad...but I stay here in India so do I have to write any entrence exam to get into it? Do I have to go though any other process? Btw loved your sketch books and photographs!
@CallumHenderson Hi i hope you are fine this video was amazing the way you explained stuff. There is something i want help with right now. Would really mean a lot if you could help me out. So basically i havent taken a level arts or gcse arts like you and now that i have 3 months left for my A2 to start i have time to make the portfolio so i dont undertstand how to build up conceptual drawing and the architectural drawing . I would really appreciate if you could answer thanx
Hi I was wondering how you got architecture experience or knowledge before high school, like does high school provide the info for you or do you need to do something else? I saw on you portfolio some blue print designs (architectural work). I’m a 14 about to go to high school and I want to be prepared. Thanks.
Hi, there's no real architectural work in this portfolio. There might be some odd random bits of designs for things I just came up with out of my head looking at books when I was younger! I wouldn't worry too much. Universities understand that architecture is not taught in high school and so only expect you to know as much as your own interest in the subject would take you!
Hi Callum, I saw ur video and it was quite inspiring for me. I'm an A-level student currently in year 12 and I'm studying Art, Literature and Physics. I sometimes doubt whether this is a good combination or not. Would you please tell me if I have done the right choices to apply for Cambridge based on your experience?
The cambridge spec says they require a portfolio subject and a good GCSE level of maths. I do not think physics and literature matters too much but they do want you to have some historical knowledge on architecture. I currently do maths, physics and 3D-design at a-level and i believe that as long as you can present a portfolio and demonstrate a good understanding of architecture, you should be fine.
I will be starting my a-levels in September. I am doing maths, physics and fine art but do i have to do art? I know universities want a portfolio but is a level art necessary? Also how much photography should you include in your portfolio
It really depends on the university so you should check their admissions pages to be sure. Generally it is strongly advised you do. Most people tend to and it will certainly make the portfolio a lot less work. I didn’t take it so it is not absolutely essential but I do do a lot of painting and drawing anyway and I don’t think you’d last long on an architecture course without an interest in art! Hope this helps:)
May I ask what alevels did u take?I didn’t choose art for alevel and now I’m doubting myself about apply to architecture. I’m currently doing Maths Further maths Physics and econ
See my about section! You don’t necessarily need art but you do need to be able to draw. Also watch the Application FAQ video I answer this in lots of detail :):)
We had a drawing and writing assessment at interview. I will talk about this in detail in my video about the interviews - this will be released next Sunday so make sure you are subscribed!:)
Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music! I think most people on my course have a combination of Fine Art, maybe Maths and the odd other humanity though. Architecture does tend to be fairlyyyyy flexible in A-Level subject choice requirements but obviously check with the universities you wish to apply for!:)
Why are you playing me 😂 planned on applying to the technical universe in Munich next year where you also have to submit a portfolio but in 1000 worlds, I couldn't creat a portfolio that comes close to yours 🥴
Glad to hear!:) ooh we share a rugby team w Emma here at Trinity Hall. Actually I used Microsoft publisher for the main layout etc. I tend to edit my photos in VSCO on my phone and/or photoshop. Then also used custom fonts I found on google instead of the standard ones you get on publisher.
Thank you!:) I studied maths, physics, further maths and music at A-Level and my grades were A*A*AA respectively. I believe the typical offer for architecture may be lower than this, however, and I received an unconditional offer as I already had my A-Level grades at the time I applied.
@@abrodolphlincoler6673 it certainly added an extra layer of complexity to the process however I did a lot of drawing as a child. If I were applying again and knew I was applying for architecture at the start of Lower Sixth I probably would have thought twice about my subjects thought!
I started around the beginning of September and continued working on it up until interviews in early December. A lot of this time was also spent actually producing the work though since I didn’t have loads of art work to hand before then.
Both. Although when applying for college the portfolio is usually just artwork whereas when applying for jobs it’s obviously then expected to be actually architectural projects.

I believe that some colleges require maths and I think all architecture courses tend to like fine art, however I didn't take art and lots of people I know didn't take maths. My advice would be double check both your college's and the university wide website for guidance on A-Level choices but make sure you pick subjects you really like as A-Levels are a lot of work and it's much easier if you enjoy them!! Good luck:)
Would I be able to get into Cambridge with alevels art, physics and history ? Would I struggle without maths?
This video was super useful thanks. But does architecture have to only be about different types of buildings and interiors or can this be expanded to something else?
Well played! Do you believe that constructing a portfolio on A1 paper is more beneficial compared to other dimensions? Thanks :)
I'm really torn between engineering and architecture.
I see you too took double maths for A level, so what was the deciding factor for you?
Maybe you could try Civil Engineering.
What size is your portfolio?
I want to join a architecture college in abroad...but I stay here in India so do I have to write any entrence exam to get into it? Do I have to go though any other process?
Btw loved your sketch books and photographs!
How did you get accepted without taking any art in A-leves?
@@CallumHenderson thank you so much this made me worry less tysm
Do you have any advice on where to start when making a portfolio?
Ps. this vid was very helpful! Thanks a lot!
@Max Caddick thank you!
Congratulations! What college did you apply to?
Thank you:) I'm studying at Trinity Hall
@@CallumHenderson I am also applying there!
@@CallumHenderson Thank you!!
Did u have a entry exam for Cambridge architecture
We had a drawing and writing assessment at interview. I will talk about this in detail in my video about the interviews - this will be released next Sunday so make sure you are subscribed!:)
Is it possible to earn architecture with just a portfolio?
What a level did you do :)
Amazing video, it was super helpful!! I'm applying to Emmanuel college🤞
I was just wondering what software you used for your digital portfolio?
Glad to hear!:) ooh we share a rugby team w Emma here at Trinity Hall. Actually I used Microsoft publisher for the main layout etc. I tend to edit my photos in VSCO on my phone and/or photoshop. Then also used custom fonts I found on google instead of the standard ones you get on publisher.
very interesting and helpful. What did you do in A-level and what grades you have got? Thanks
Congratulations :)
Thank you!:) I studied maths, physics, further maths and music at A-Level and my grades were A*A*AA respectively. I believe the typical offer for architecture may be lower than this, however, and I received an unconditional offer as I already had my A-Level grades at the time I applied.
@@CallumHenderson did you find it hard to be accepted without a art and design a level
@@abrodolphlincoler6673 it certainly added an extra layer of complexity to the process however I did a lot of drawing as a child. If I were applying again and knew I was applying for architecture at the start of Lower Sixth I probably would have thought twice about my subjects thought!
Are A1 papers acceptable for all the colleges ?
Mate did you get accepted?
when did you start to prepare your portfolio
I started around the beginning of September and continued working on it up until interviews in early December. A lot of this time was also spent actually producing the work though since I didn’t have loads of art work to hand before then.
What software did you use to format the portfolio?
I used Microsoft Publisher!
is portfolio to get in to college from high school ? I thought it was to get a job
Both. Although when applying for college the portfolio is usually just artwork whereas when applying for jobs it’s obviously then expected to be actually architectural projects.
Iam from india how do I get Cambridge University for architecture cource? Pls answer me🙏
Work hard, follow your interest and be proactive!
@@CallumHenderson thankyou very much brother🤩
so if I just graduated high school and want to pursue architecture as a major to study I must have to submit work like that to get accepted ?
Depends on the country and university
