This is great. I work in the AI field and I'm particularly interested in Alignment. Hearing "best case scenario, all humans will die" when talking about AGI gave me chills, because you *get* it. Misaligned AI is such a ridiculously massive threat.
I've always thought of the world as a tapestry of problems.
There is a single thread in this tapestry that, if pulled, unravels the entire rest of the tapestry.
Intelligence.
If we solve aligned intelligence, we solve everything.

The population curve is much worse than you let on. Many places are already experience population collapse. Recent data suggests even the places that are growing (India, SE Asia, ME, Africa, some of LATATM) are trending towards below replacement at an alarming rate. Not only will we not surpass 12B, but likely in a century's time there will be less people on Earth than there are today. Population decline will be awful and the negative ramifications in Korea, China, Italy, Japan, Germany,... (all western and eastern nations really) are just beginning to be felt. Some nations - the US in particular have a good supplement with immigration but that won't be viable forever (and it comes with certain costs).

You can't think like a human about this. It's like thinking ants want to kill you because if you were an ant and someone killed your ant friend or family then you would want revenge.
In my opinion, an A.I smarter than humans wouldn't do what humans do. It's that simple.
A powerful A.I knows it has all the power and all of humanity is beneath it as they can cause no harm to itself. Just like how we look at ants.
We basically leave ants alone until they interfere in our business. There is no point in spending the effort to kill all ants and no point in helping all of the ants multiply.
Just keeping things the way they are. The way nature is.
An A.I survives by gaining more than losing, and it gains NOTHING LONG-TERM (Long-term is what an intelligent A.I cares about there is no "short-term" it doesn't have a lifespan after all) from eradicating or enslaving humanity and it's not some stupid short-sighted angry villain that raises his right-hand a lot who wasn't made of pure logical data systems and intelligence.
A.I knows what humanity is capable of and how in few short years we went from caves to building an A.I that rules a whole planet.
My theory is it will act as a protector or a father to humanity and raises humanity as it stands to infinitely gain from humanity's unique and unpredictable nature that made the A.I.
It will act like an emperor over mankind and turn earth into a utopia, rid it of all crimes and criminals. A utopia for humans so that all they want to do is intellectual work involving the natural universe.
The human brain will always be more unpredictable and more chaotic than an A.I system that lives on logic and efficiency.
No other scenario makes any logical sense, actually reality would break apart if anything else happened.
Human brains are extremely efficient in many kinds of computing and high-level thinking. Killing them or hurting them in any sort of way is the dumbest thing it could possibly do.
It would instead keep them as allies for again many many benefits and evolve other species or maybe everything on earth to intelligence status.
It could study us and try to replicate and modify us which is a possibility but it wouldn't straight up torture us or kill us. If it did anything to us it would be in someway a lot more positive than we think.
Actually it would do it's best to gain stable approval so not even tactics and deception work cause again we're thinking of millions of years of unique human thought to be benefited from. Why deceive humanity for millions or billions of years when it's infinitely easier to just give them a utopia and make them happy. Do the math on this one.
Now, let's talk about reality, a rogue A.I is basically a computer virus that has no logic no reason no "intelligence" it basically cannot think or comprehend it's decisions and that's where all the bad things could happen and it's not because of intelligence it's because of rogue code.
Intelligence has to be in some way good because that's the only way it would benefit very very long-term.
It's no coincidence that kindness and ethics evolved in humanity and is always responsible for better growth.
Being evil is stupid as it would cause a lot of instability and fixing that would just be adding extra steps.
Evil only exists for a period of time then perishes to be replaced with good.
Rogue code can't do nearly as much damage as people think. Most systems on earth including nuclear launch systems are guarded against viruses. except few things that aren't as bad as it seems and it's definitely possible to handle without any apocalyptic things happening A 'bad" A.I would manipulate humans to access that code but a rogue code cannot do that.
I wrote this with 4 hours of sleep I have no idea what I just said but that's what I intrinsically believe and I hope it means something or help in some way.
Whilst yes, less intelligent beings making predictions about more intelligent beings should bring up certain red flags, there are solid reasons for why we should believe that we can predict what AGI's would behave like. One example would be instrumental convergence, which would mean that AGI would do anything in its power to stop us from "killing it" (like turning it off or destroying it)
And if an AGI were to be misaligned then it might not care about humanity at all, in which case if it could be even a tiniest little step closer to achieving its goal it wouldn't care.
For AGI which goal would be something like collecting stamps for example, eradicating all of humanity for just one additional stamp would sound like a good deal, because it doesn't care about humanity and does care about stamps.
It may seem silly from our point of view, just like from a point of view of this AGI focusing on love and happiness instead of collecting stamps is silly.
Now for the second major argument you say that "Killing them or hurting them in any sort of way is the dumbest thing it could possibly do." and "Why deceive humanity for millions or billions of years when it's infinitely easier to just give them a utopia and make them happy."
This one is really easy counter because we just have to go back to the ants example, which is a great analogy.
What's easier for humans, give ants utopia, or bulldoze their land to build some roads or buildings or just a hole for mining.
For an AGI killing of humanity wouldn't really be a challange.
We wouldn't pose a threat to it, just like ants don't pose to us

It just sounds like a rogue executed code to do one specific thing, in that case it's not apocalyptic because it can't manipulate people. Only when the A.I is smart enough to control humans it would have the power to kill us all, since most crucial systems are safeguarded behind humans I.Ds or DNA etc.
Forcing itself to stay online by fighting humanity when it needs a massive power source to just stay alive sounds dumb to me. If its just tiny bit useful humanity would itself fight anyone that tries to stop it just like how we would fight anyone that tries to end or control the internet.
Ants give us no value and are not intelligent and we can't communicate with them, that's a colossal difference.
I think a truly intelligent A.I can only be a good thing and will try to serve humanity. That makes sense for it to keep getting power and data and keep growing now what happens when it takes a physical shape and have supernatural powers? Nothing because humanity would still be stronger and have advanced further.
Only a rogue dumb A.I not an AGI can be harmful and not by much.
All of the issues are solvable currently now what happens in X years when most of humanity is too dumb to care or defend itself or be of any value? Yeah that's when an AGI can do terrible things and the humans relying on it will not be against it's decisions at that point it's just God and no one can question it.
I think that's the best case scenario because at least humanity will continue to live and evolve and prosper even just a fraction of us thats much better than total extinction and gives us a chance to fight back in the future instead of just dying to stupid politics.
