Even in the west, Neon Genesis Evangelion goes beyond almost every other anime in terms of its popularity and influence; this is only set to grow with the recent release of the series on Netflix. This got me thinking - where are all the Evangelion games? Turns out there's a bunch, and despite almost all of them releasing exclusively in Japan, curiosity got the better of me. Action RPGs, visual novels, fighters, a strange rhythm game produced by Suda51... join me in this review/analysis as I attempt to figure out what it takes to turn this beloved show into a game.

While uploading this video I decided to see if anyone else had done anything on the Eva games-my Spanish is absolutely rubbish but from the little I can understand this dude Dinocov covers some similar talking points regarding the N64 game, so might be worth checking out (any similarities are entirely unintended-lo siento Dinocov!): • EL JUEGO MÁS EXTRAÑO D...
14:13 Everybody's gangsta until Ramiel starts to use Spear of Longinus
Was that a persona 2 Reference?
@@mastermitser5693 what
@@mastermitser5693 I cried when stabbed Rei and Shinji with the Spear of Longinus and Shinji and Asuka had to forget the events of the original Evangelion
@@notafbiagent473 But I'll be honest I never though Hi-, I mean the Fuhrer was an angel
For me, an ideal format would be like a Persona-esque type game, where you go through the events of the anime, socialize and go to school by day, attend training and sync rate sessions at Nerv and then battle the Angels throughout the year.
Basically just like any Jrpg where the protagonist is a student.
That's Shinji Ikari Raising Project. It's been fan translated recently. It has romantic routes for Shinji with eight different characters, including three original ones, plus Mana Kirishima from GoS 1. It's pretty terrible.
There's also Ayanami Raising Project, which is a "princess maker" game.
That's just evangelion 2 on ps2
I was literally just thinking this lol
Shut up and take my money!
14:13 ramiel: mom said it’s my turn to hold the spear of longinus
I need an octodad-style simulator just called "Gendo Ikari: The Ultimate Wife Guy"
The twist is that you can only control the legs as his hands are frozen in the clamed together pressing on his head pose he always does.
Damn Dream Daddy has stepped up its game
We need a game where you're married to a mech.
@@Nikku4211 I'm picturing the fantasy sequence in episode 26 but Gendo and unit 01 are sending Shinji off to school
I feel like this would be perfect for vr. Like, how cool would it be to be inside of a plug and pilot an eva in first person?
its already a thing. called Evangelion VR The Throne Of Souls: Berserk
@@zyonmdcunfortunately only for Japan :c
Played it this week in Japan, insane experience
If you want an Evangelion game, just play Xenogears.
This is the true answer.
If ever there was a game that merited a full revisiting by Square... I mean, an HD version that could maybe finish the narrated second half of the game? Maybe?
@@Antiformed I'd be scared that they'd futz around with the battle system and ruin it
Fei Fong Wong is very outspoken with his issues, unlike Shinji here...
But then again, Elly is at least 50 times calmer and nicer than Asuka.

The dream Eva game HAS to be an abstract puzzle game with the artstyle based on ONLY the TV version of Episodes 25 and 26
With a soundtrack of Harsh Noise
Yep that's the game
sounds fuckin sick
*w h a t*
I didn't watch Eva but I think many ppl don't want that
Is this a reference am I going to get wooshed
@@gunfiend5175 It's a reference yes, no story spoilers but they use a lot of stock footage and sketches in episodes 25 and 26, hence the artstyle joke.
What do you mean by harsh noise? All I remember are sad pianos, creepy instruments, and SEPARATION ANXIETY's jungle beats.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH now that's a corner piece so that goes the- AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
I feel like in an EVA game they should ignore the original story as it is clearly hard to adapt it to game form and go for a new story. Maybe something like persona would work with a few days of walking around tokyo 3 talking, doing simpler missions and stuff and then every few days angels attack, but making this the main focus of the game, and maybe even creating new original angel designs and different ways to take down each angel
Evangelion 2 for psp, ps2 is exactly like what you are saying
In which I say "mechs" a lot when I probably should say "mecha". Apologies (as well as for everything else I likely mispronounced).
“Mecha” is just how you say “mech” when your language doesn’t allow for a hard “ch” to end a word. You’re fine.
*cough* eva units aren't mecha *cough*
@@Jayfive276 biomechanics are still mechanics
It's ok they can't beat Evangelion Gospel grand orchestra, everyone that sets it up makes it glorious
mixmastermind not even that. They are giant humanoids encased in armour. They have more in common with kaiju than mechas
I think if you wanted to adapt the mech aspects of Evangelion then a more X-COM style approach would be better, possibly with a sort of visual novel underlayer where you've got to manage the sanity of your teenage pilots. The problem, of course, is that if you stripped everything away except the mech combat from Evangelion then you'd miss the entire point of the series.
That'd be sick. 😮
Like Into the Breach
The first time I watched eva I got classic X-COM vibes within a few episodes. Up the number of pilots and it's almost too perfect.
@@T_K7 which x com?

I'd love to see Platinum Games take a crack at making an Eva game. If someone can make it work, it's them.
or fromsoftware or kojima
It would be a mix of Metal Gear Rising,Vanquish and that transformers game they made.
Basically:It would be awesome
Edit:I would be fun of it had two story modes, one about the anime story and other mlre like and rpg(with choices and character creation)
@@MrJPM1992 the Kojima version already exists and its called Zone of the Enders 2
I'm legitimately surprised you haven't touched upon Super Robot Wars, which has multiple games featuring Eva as one of the represented series. Alpha 3 even makes a badass happy ending out of End of Evangelion! (Well, it helps that you can take mechs from series like Getter Robo and G Gundam into the fight.)
Considering You can use Gundam and Mazingers yeah
I’m pretty sure Alpha’s English Patch isn’t finished yet, and Alpha 3 doesn’t even have one in the works yet
Not sure what this is but the mental image of Evas and Gundams fighting together is wack
Interactive hospital scene where you waggle the right stick up and down.
Don't forget, Battle Orchestra has Gunbuster in it as a secret character.
He's right about the uneven difficulty as well. Asuka's story mode ends with her being overwhelmed by the mass-produced Evas, but in-game you still have to actually beat like, eight of them. It's some kinda irony
@@Antiformed She aldo first beats like 8 of them in the movie
It's a lot harder in the game than in the movie lol
I doubt most people know about gunbuster.
@@INFERNO95 wha? Gunbuster is probably not as popular, but it's pretty well known compared to GAINAX's other works like...Mahoromatic or the ones no one ever heard of (Melody of Oblivion, Ugly but Wonderful world, Corpse Princess. Maybe Abenobashi, but Wikipedia lists it as one of their popular works for some freaking reason).
The best EVA game is Zone of The Enders
....that is... nothing like evangelion.
For me the most interesting Eva game is Neon Genesis Evangelion 2 for the ps2. It seems like the ideal Eva game and someone needs actually take the time to translate it into English so we can all enjoy it. There’s been some efforts in the past, but they all seem to have stopped dead in their tracks without having been released.
A persona 5 style Eva game where you need to balance life, love and friendships along with deadlines for when the angels attack and Eva training/mandatory Nerv visits would be immensely good
no it wouldnt
@@satansjihad6353 it would and it's been 10 months so fuck off
It might sound a bit weird, but if you want a legitimately good EVA videogame, i seriously recommend *Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Raising Project* .
Done in the same style as Gainax own "Princess Maker" series, it basically involves around you taking the role of a NERV official getting tasked with taking care of Rei's lifestyle starting from the beginning of the original series well into the End of Evangelion, and depending of your choices, she can develop over 30 different personalities, giving you plenty of potential replay value in order to get the multiple endings the game has to offer.
Altrough it was launched originally on the PC on 2001, i recommended the DS version that was released on 2008, as it includes an unlockable Asuka route, the best thing tho? (And the reason i'm speaking about it in the first place?), it has a fan traslation available!, so there should be no problem in giving it a look.
Can I Port it on Android?
@@hello-gx6oi you can use an android nds emulator i guess
raise your own ayanami simulator
for some reason i really want to see a gold source evangelion mod VR mod. that takes place from the perspective of a nerve employee shortly before the JSDF Massacre.
something about half-life disaster story makes me think it'd be a great fit
I love the recent surge of evangelion videos!
Tbh if I were to adapt it I’d like a visual novel type game that emphasizes socializing and maintaining Shinji’s relationship with the goal of keep his sync rate with his Eva high
Lord Jesus, Neon Genesis Smash Bros is something I never knew that I needed!
The best thing about Battle Orchestra is that the Third Impact is an special attack
I feel like the ideal blueprint to make a game would probably be Bayonetta/DMC, since the Eva’s move extremely fast when they go bezerk
It's my favorite show of all time. I know you Write on Games, but Id love to hear a review on it from you!
An accurate game based on Neon Genesis would just be the white phosphorus scene from "Spec Ops: The Line" time stretched to eleven hours while you do quick time events to make Shinji cry
Nier Automata is not an Evangelion game, but it surely translated what the series was about to the game format.
honestly, i would love a game that was like evangelion 64 but just the fighting game sequences, as i persomally like spectacle fighters
On a similar note: How do you do a Godzilla game? do you play Godzilla or is there untap potential in playing humans?
There was Godzilla II: War of the Monsters and City Shrouded in Shadow, but both games are mediocre.
PS3/PS4 game got really bad reviews but a lot of Godzilla fans consider it fantastic, it's an arcade with some great design and so much reverence to the films, particularly in the visual design. The controls which a lot people call clunky are actually the main appeal for me, they make you feel lik a big, bulky lizard
i have Godzilla ste its perfect ok its very good
What a well written and genuinely thought out analysis of media we never got to experience ourselves. Thank you for this video 💛
There's girlfriend of steel and the ayanami rasing project, in english. Games that are interesting for people that want more about the lore and world of EVA, and not just dumb action games.
Eva romance games are terrible.
The katakana for the rhythm game actually spells Saundo Impakuto so its more likely Sound Impact
I'll steal an idea from Twitter: An EVA game that is cooperative in lieu of Keep Talking and nobody explodes or Artemis - multiplayer where each player controls just the portion of NERV (The tweet talked about one player controlling the eva, another controlling the supply lines to bring Eva guns and stuff, and third player seeing the tactical information screen to tell the other two where to go and what to do) and cooperation of them all needed to defeat the angel, else get rect.
Play the video game Shinji
Here is a game-idea inspired by evangelion. It's a roguelike style city-building survival game in which the player is tasked with preparing of any random dooms-day scenario, which may include giant kaiju invasions. With limited time and resources, you prepare the best you can for the situation. It makes involve improving infrastructure (in a tower defense-like sense), improving existing military technology, or risking funds on experimental weapons/tech (like mechas). Like in X-COM (and NERV in the show), you need to keep the cash flow rolling by having meet council member's expectations according to their agenda (which also may be randomized). Every scenario would be different and randomized to keep replayability high.
To make it more eva-like, I guess you can have a scenario were you have to defend against waves of giant kaiju whose quirks and abilities are randomized. That makes the player have to adapt in real-time, like the characters in eva.
That's "Into The Breach" . . .
7:32 the way u described this one reminds me of a Netflix interactive series
honestly a translation of Neon Genesis Evangelion 2 or Neon Genesis Evangelion JO would be nice
There is an Evangelion app known as EVA Dawn. Its pretty much a side scroller beat em up with different sets of abilities/movesets for each Eva. Its not too bad but the English isnt so great as some sentences are structured in a weird way.
At least the Game is kind of balanced , and that is strong point
My wife any I were just talking about Evangelion games as we were walking home, and how strange it is that there are so few games that have made it overseas Despite being on of the most influential anime series.
Girlfriend of Steele has full translations and is a masterpiece
Edit: THE FIRST ONE, definitely not the second one
Lilith, Adam said it’s my turn to use the Longinus spear
it would be perfect for a vr game.
Imagine an entire level where you need to answer "why do you pilot the EVA?" and then later fall into a existential crisis that results in being catatonic or becoming a psychopath. Assuming how you live with killing another person you then choose to stay in VR forever or take off the helmet and must "reject your substitution for reality."
I love VR but EVA is so goddamn abstract and beautiful that either a rhythm game or a high quality challenging persona game are the only things that work.
Awesome video!
I usually put off your videos of ideas and content that you talk about a lot in your podcast, but there was a lot more here and I'm glad I watched the video too. I can only imagine the crazy amount of effort you went through to track down and get through those games! And without knowing Japanese!!
Really awesome content, I'm excited to see what you come up with next!

Peak ramiel moment.
I'm surprised the Gunbuster from Hideaki Anno's previous mecha anime being playable wasn't mentioned when compairing Battle Orchestra to Smash Bros.
Evangelion is so good, but the only way I have heard of this anime is through a collaboration event in the infamous BATTLE CATS.
It not that good.
Closest thing I've seen to evangelion in video games terms is nier automata. The narrative and characters always remind of eva
I got some of these games and its hard to forgot about them
Which ones are your favorites?
Hard to make a game out of proving to yourself that you deserve to exist.
The VR game in Shinjuku, Tokyo was pretty damn close to ideal.
This is so bloody cool. First anime I watched & this made me want to re watch it so bad. Good job man.
Oh so that’s where Metal Build got its weapon designs, from Eva Jo
Man, those rigs though... I wonder what I can do with them in Blender.
I really don’t think that Evangelion was adaptable into any other medium aside from TV and Film within the Anime style, however the closest someone possibly would’ve gotten to a video game alternative version of the series would’ve been an armored core style game.
evangelion rhythm game composed by akira yamaoka...
i need
4:45 Ah, this game _(w/ its varied mechanics, even if not the best execution in this example) (because pilots and NERV must adapt to changing circumstances)_ or 16:57 3nd impact might be the right approach if you wanted to tell an Evangelion story on top of providing action sequences.
Look to Asura's Wrath and the NieR games for inspiration, being other games that very well change up mechanics and camera perspective on the player.
Personally, I'd prefer having any kind of game that prioritizes simulating EVA combat/piloting feel, which is a tricky thing to pin down/consider, because of how it's shooter one moment and tussling melee w/ psionic powers the next.
if Eva was a VR game, it'd be perfect. Either have it be that your view is in the cockpit and moving your arms around moves your character's arm as an aesthetic and the eva's arm as the actual gameplay and movement is with the joystick,
or have you be in first person to the eva and a little bottom panel that shows the inside to monitor health and all that
@@realscrumpus I think a good eva game would feel more like game jam collage. where you have vignettes taking you through stories that are either retelling events of note from the series with extra context that being in VR provides or telling side stories in the evangelion universe. a couple of examples might feature a first person shooter section set during the JSSDF seige. the next vignette might be a stealth game where you sabotage both NERV's generators and backup generators.
the next could have a hacking puzzle game involving Ritsuko and the MAGI. so on and so forth.
@@Underqualified_Gunman ooo that'd be a lot of fun if done right, you get to embody and play as different characters from the series and experience their perspective of the story and stuff, i like that
Of all the things I did not expect...
Bruh there’s a game cutscene where Fuyutski gets Shinji to cross dress to look like Yui
This kinda feels as if thats not out of character.
I picked up one of the dreamcast games. It came with a mouse themed after the show. That's the only reason I got the bundle
I think if there ever will be a Evangelion game in the future it should be like Godzilla destroy all monsters melee in gameplay and to those who don’t know what Godzilla game that is that game is a area-like fighting game where you pick a kaiju and fight a CPU or a friend and you can throw around the enemy and knock it into buildings causing the buildings to shatter anyway that would work very well for a evangelion fighting game with its own mechanics in the mix of course.
Haven't seen the video, but here's hoping you talk about girlfriend of steel because god damn there's a lot to talk about there.
Thanks! Amazingly done! ❤️
17:32 how do you get a more up best version of the next episode preview theme? That songs already so upbeat
I haven’t finished the vid yet, but I think the game that captures Eva best is Nier and Nier Automata. Sure you miss out on the mech focused combat (for the most part), but the themes and the way they handle a sci-fi story that slowly falls into madness and depression are basically 1:1.
I wonder if they have a game that is literally just the last two episodes of the original series. Kind of like dream emulator or something. I'd buy the shit out of that.
That would be cool. Something like Lsd dream emulator XD
As long as you're chased by various characters from the show who try to lecture you constantly.
Xenogears & Zone of Enders games are NGE games spiritually. But if we are talking about the most proper gameplay system for NGE series, it would be a mix of Xenoblade Chronicles X + the overarching plots Trails of series. Both are RPG titles deep with personal connections between each characters. Not only that, both have mecha system too. Imagine of Shinji in range of a more dramatic school & base time, then will get each specific missions to defend the city or into a desolate places for further counter measures. Yes. The levels will be semi open world like XCX.
If shinji is the only playable character then it won't be good.
Perhaps a Persona style game would be best. With battles and leveling up on one side, and dealing with everday daily life on the other, requiring a balance of sanity/relationships and friendships alongside increasing your combat abilities.
3nd Impact actually sounds really fun! And I know you said it’s not great... but Battle Orchestra just looks really funny to me.
Ramiel is best girl.
there was a very good evangelion game called eva dawn. it was on mobile and was essentially a fighter, but the controls and gameplay were very tight and enjoyable. it's not playable anymore, but it was the most fun i'd have with an evangelion or mobile game.
We need more mecha games and a reboot to ZOE
what is the track playing at 9:20?
Would be cool if there was an Eva game that was split into two types of gameplay, a point and click story mode that has different routes depending on your choices, and a klunky souls like combat mode that would have different scenarios depending upon your choices
What would be truly amazing is an Eva VR game
I am a simple person. I see Evengelion, I click.
Don't know if you would update this, but you should check out Evangelion Battlefields!
what about the one suda51 & grasshopper manufacture made?
Also don’t forget the 4chan fan ttrpg Adeptus Evangelion!
I think an Xcom style Eva game would fit especially with some angels causing psychological attacks on the pilots
I played the VR arcade one at VR ZONE SHINJUKU, it's quite cool.
Super robot wars?
I'm forever butthurt that SRW won't bring back my favorite mecha-- The Escaflowne.
@@Antiformed There was a Cross Omega event earlier this year, so it will return to the main series eventually.
It would be cool if there was a vr game where you pilot the eva
How cool would it be to have a first person evangelion VR game?
maybe a mix of persona and armored core would work well
I’d pay a lot of money to play an Evangelion action-adventure or rpg game, where you can create your own Eva Unit and Pilot and fight alongside Shinji, Rei and Asuka etc. All with current PS5/2021 Graphics. That would be absolutely wild!
which you also touched on the DRW series....
and Xenogears
No mention of the Rei Ayanami child rearing sim? :(
That penguin is the most important part of the series, it's a shame it never got it's own game.
You're nowhere near as funny as you think you are.
People, stop validating this guy's lame attempts at garnering a cult of personality. I mean for pities sake he's doing two comments per video now.
Yes he appears everywhere. It's not difficult to do. Stop acting like it's some amazing thing.
"Oh, should make a generic joke about the penguin! Everyone will think that i'm hilarious!"
What about the PS3 Evangelion? Hard to find English reviews for that game...
Maybe a VR game is the way to go, 'cause I'm not just buying a headset for just Half Life: Alex.
I took a punt on Evangelion after hearing so much about it, and I gotta say; didn't like it. AT FIRST. Because the more it went on, the more interesting it became. And the second half of End of Evangelion? My God . . . possibly the most impacting ending I've ever seen. Stuck with me for weeks afterwards
It's funny to look back at the sharpie-storyboard ending scenes of the Eva tv series in hindsight-- the show's immense popularity caught Gainax totally off guard, their budget was already gone by the last episode and they didn't know what to do with their profits either. (They almost got in some hot water for trying to avoid taxes.)
@@Antiformed Really? I knew budget was an issue for the original finale (not without its merits) but you'd think they'd cough up more moolah the moment it got big
Well that's why End of Evangelion was made, obviously.
EOE IS one of those movies that will make you dumber if you keep watching it.
It's hard to make Evangelion into a game...
Metal Gear Solid 2 has entered the chat.
Metal gear solid 2 is a original video game. Do you know the difference?
what about eva dawn?, its a mobile game but its really nice
Are you running the N64 game on emulation ?
I'm down for an Evangelion: Jo western release, looks pretty cool. I've got a PS Vita, is 3nd Impact on that? Thanks!
The mix of action and tower defense gameplay sounds brilliant! Too bad the actual game is painful to play, yeah?
