Goalkeeper Training: How To Save Low Shots

  • Goalkeepers must have great technique when it comes to the low ball collection. Especially in crowded boxes and on set pieces the keeper must make his hold on the first attempt and NEVER give up a rebound in front of goal.
    The hardest shot for any goalkeeper is always under his/her hips because it will always force the keeper to work by making them get a safe hold. If you do not have proper technique while collecting low shots you can and will give up an easy rebound goal.
    Make sure to cover this training session and technique at least once a week! Keeper practice is all about repetition and progression so make sure you're doing your reps!

    can you do a video on how to properly save shots that bounce, and shots that come from high in the air to lower knee shin area

  • @ralphclink379
    @ralphclink379 8 лет назад +40

    I prefer to drop my knee down and make the wall (a block). The problem with keeping your legs open is if you fimble the ball it's going straight through your legs into the back of the net. With the block if you fumble it will bounce off your legs instead of sliding through. Also by not fully bringing your knee down but not leaving a gap big enough between your knee and the ground that the ball could slide through, you can easily remain mobile and be able to react to bobbles and deflections.

      I like that basket catch but I don't open my legs like I'm going to do the split and I also dive forward to the ball

    • @joeblack1972
      @joeblack1972 7 лет назад +2

      Mistor Clinky bend a knee to close the gap ok if you like but never drop to a knee like he says in the video. Once you've put down a knee you've taken yourself out of the play if that shot takes a weird bounce or deflection or in case you don't block it properly and need to make a second save. GL

    Some really good tips there, the technique @ 1:41 is so much better imo than the wide squat. Its a good 2nd barrier in case you don't catch the ball cleanly or conditions are not great. If you don't decide a knee to drop you shouldn't have a problem. @ 1:51 all he had to do was drop the other knee and step slightly across. Unless the shot is closer than say 12 yards you should have enough time to do it.

    • @ARSGoalkeeping
      @ARSGoalkeeping  9 лет назад +1

      right lots of people like the barrier style and it's definitely the way I started my low ball collection but if you notice most of the time dropping the knee makes you stop in place. If there is any awkward movement of the ball or maybe even a tip off a defend you will not be in keeper ready position to react and dive. Look at Iker Casillas' mistake against Atletico Madrid (4-0 First goal) Iker dropped a knee when he should have done a wide squat and smothered the ball with his chest. Of course it works but many coaches are starting to move onto a different technique personally ive noticed better collection with this technique than the other but youre free to do whichever keeps the ball out of the goal!

    • @lozsaintsfc93
      @lozsaintsfc93 9 лет назад +3

      I see where your coming from, i think there are circumstances for both ways. At a high level of football perhaps the wide squat is better when strikers can strike a ball is such a way there is a lot of movement on the ball or if your defenders are within your box also handling of gks at the highest level should be excellent. But if the shot clearly isnt going to take a deflection and there isnt too much movement, the 2nd barrier adds security. Also i think its good for kids to learn the 2nd barrier to start off with until their handling is at a good standard.

    • @ARSGoalkeeping
      @ARSGoalkeeping  9 лет назад +1

      lozsaintsfc93
      Oh definitely and I agree with your point whole heartedly younger keepers need to learn the stepping stones of technique and I used the 2nd barrier technique up until last season! It's still a time honored technique and I even made some saves in big games by dropping down the knee. I also started Jaime (the keeper in this video) with the drop knee technique, it's very difficult to get out of it as you can see he still does it every time. In the end the keeper should choose what works for him or her best. Thanks for having such a good respectable discussion on this!

I was hoping that you might be able to review the J4K Pro Hyprid gloves as i am very interested in buying them and would like to know if they are good. I dont think that there are any reviews of them on RUclips and looking at commemts from unboxing videos of them it seems people would love to see and in game review of them and in as much depth as you do which is great. Thanks, I hope you can review them but if not don't worry!

    nice vid, Alberto, uhm a few of questions.
    1. How tall are you?
    2. Would being shorter than 5 ft 9 (180 cm) be an issue at all? Do you think being taller is better?
    3. I've noticed that nearly all your videos about (except one, that I've noticed) goalkeeping is about stopping shots from quite a distance. That's probably because you play with decent defenders, but how do I react to close-up shots? and I mean, really close ones, like 2-3 meters away from you.
    Do I just take a best guess where the striker might aiming? Because they kick it very hard, it's not possible for me to react to them quickly enough. Or do I just have problems with my reactions?

    The knee block is so much better as if you do what he’s doing and miss the ball it goes straight through your legs into the goal but if you miss the ball but have your knee in the way is will deflect out for a corner

      Any time, you're the best. My goalkeeper skills have improved a lot thanks to you. I always used to play football, but it was mini football and from there I went to futsal and from there to actual football. So clearly it was hard for me to adapt to a big goal, thinking every wide shot goes out when it actually goes in. Your videos helped a lot with that issue. I just have one question, if you have any idea, what are some drills I can do at home to improve agility, reflexes, and all that? And what exercises can I do at home that will help with the essential muscles needed for goalkeeping? If you don't know the answer it's fine.
      Thanks once again for the tips!!

    hey dude Iam a goalkeeper too...
    I think if you put your knee down is more seafty... you don't have to turn your foot in left or right becouse that way you really can't react the bouncing balls but if you just put it down you will able to react any balls but keeping the goal safe from the low balls

    When i dive to save a shot, i usually use the hand where the ball coming, like if the ball come from the right i use my right hand, and if the ball come from the left i use left hand. But i have a question like if the attackers take a high shot, is it better to use the upper arm, which mean dive to right i use my left arm and when i dive to left i use right arm?

    • @CubicleComa369
      @CubicleComa369 7 лет назад

      Dang Thien Dang you can cover higher shots if you use your upper hand(high shot to the right, go with your left, high shot to the left, go with your right)but this technique should only be used if you can't get the height with both of your hands, all dives should manually be approached with both hands.

    Hi Alberto,
    I've just got a quick question:
    I used to use the technique where I placed a leg behind the ball to form a sort of wall. ( 1:33 ) However, in a drill I left weight on the twisting leg and ended up tearing through my medial collateral ligament (runs on the inside of my knee). I'm currently going through physio but I am extremely nervous for when having to save low shots in the future as I do not want a reoccurrence. Any tips? Should I be lifting the 'blocking' leg clean off the ground before twisting to make a shield or would you recommend the lower basket technique?
    Thanks

      make sense your mind is trying to give your body more time to read the ball and catch it. Practice just make a very SMALL power step, just like the square drill that I'm doing in this video do whatever you want to shuffle through the square but work on setting the balls in front and practicing stepping into the ball with your feet and toes pointing towards the ball. Repeat it over and over again and soon enough your body will start comfortably stepping into the ball instead of to the side

      That's tough stuff! have you check out Westcoastgoalkeeping.com? I know that they ship internationally for like 10-15 but I don't know about shipping to dubai. They are awesome gloves and if you send them an email they will work with you to make sure you get your own pair!
