I love the idea of beneficial insects so much! I don't really mind insects at all. We only JUST started having a small mealy bug problem and it wouldn't be enough food for a ton of insects to chow down on. I hope the bug content doesn't go away on your channel though! Your shots and editing of the insects are awesome and so interesting.
Ha! You are like the Disney princess for insects-they fly in on command on like Snow White. Have always considered using beneficial insects for pest managements. Thanks for the info!
I feel lucky to have a beneficial community where I live. I just picked up my first batch which was one quarter of a lacewing larvae container and one beneficial nematodes pack. If I had to get a complete lacewing larvae order, it would have been way too many for my needs. It’s awesome to get into beneficials in an area with such a great community. The group also helped significantly and immediately in identifying my mystery pest (spider mites before any webbing showed up).
That's so funny. The lacewing got his/her 15 minutes (or 8:27, which is the length of the video) of fame. Cue in the bug! I've never noticed any pests on my plants...though I don't look that closely as I probably should. What I do is when I water (weekly or biweekly), is spray the plant leaves with my sink sprayer, to clean off dust and maybe pests. Very interesting and cool information.. thank you!
This is sooooo cool. I’m an entomologist so I end up having a lot of random insects flying around my apartment because I don’t really mind. When my plant collection grows more I’ll consider doing pest management this way
Summer, you are such a great help with the plant community here in YT. I am a new plant mama and if I have any questions about my houseplants in general, i come to your channel because you are a wealth of information. You make everything about plants, insect and more look so so cool ! Keep doing what you do because you inspired me in my channel and the rest of the plant community to love plants more and how to take care of them properly.
I'm okay with lady bugs and the other beetle, but we get that lace wing green one and it always freaks me out when it gets in my house and flys around. But I only have 118 plants and I feel like I don't have enough plants or pests to bring in that many beneficial bugs. Great video and I learned some valuable things. Thanks Summer, really appreciate you sharing this video.
My plants got hit hard by thrips. I tried to do it with lacewings but they didnt really work. What i really can recement if you have thrips are predatory mites, they are just amazing very easy to put on the plants and you nearly cant see them so nobody gets grossed out. Thanks for your amazing videos Summer and for inspiering me to use benefitcial incects. Sorry for my bad english and greetings from switzerland. Plant one on me!
Hi Summer! Very cool and informative video. Even though I don't have enough plants for this, it's still very interesting. And that lacewing showing up for your video ….. 👍 👌 👏 Thank you for sharing!
sweet little lacewing synchronicity.... ❤ I live in the country and ladybugs overwinter in my walls until the sun starts warming the place up in the spring when lots come out and join me indoors but even over winter always are a few around! seems I also keep a few resident spiders as well ... selective bug love lol...
Just received 5k lacewings I may have gone overboard a bit lol I have 100+ pepper plants in a spare bedroom and aphids are just going to town on them hopefully this helps, thanks for the info, subbed and follwing!
I would definitely choose this option if it was available where I live. I tried searching for someone who sells beneficial insects but I was only able to find insects that are sold as food for terrarium animals. Since they are live creatures, importing them from somewhere is probably not an option and that also brings up the question of releasing them/ insects flying out when your windows are open. However, I think this is definitely the best option especially since you don't have to worry about pests all the time and it happens to everyone that when inspecting some plants you miss some and then the next time you look at it they are just having a feast on your plant.
I dont have very many plants (like 30/40) but I do plan on getting some lacewings to release both in my home and in my garden :) Have you posted a video on how exactly to release them when they come in as an egg?
I never considered other insects as a solution and I’m amazing!! I’m not a bug person at all. But I think I could handle the lacewings! Although I don’t think I have enough plants to use them as an option ☹️
If seen them randomly on a dracaena that been sitting outside for nearly whole summer it was rootbound and repotted it had barely any growth but is finally recovering it had 1 egg on it.
Hi! I just got my package with green lace wings larvae today, but we just applied neem oil to our plant yesterday... Should we wait when releasing them? And if so, how long? Thanks so much! Lucia
What about cooking in the Kitchen ...I love to cook. Sooo will the different smell attrack them in the kitchen or the walls, beds etc. Iam new to your wonderful site....so far, so love....
The only beneficial insect I have indoors is a small worm composting box. My husband barely tolerates that, but they stay put in their box so we’ve reached an understanding. 🤓
I’ve thought of this, specifically ladybugs 🐞but a quick google search shows people have had serious ladybug infestations... so combatting one bug with another seemed a bit risky
This is the first video of yours I've watched, and I was drawn here because I have aphids in my indoor lettuce that I'm growing. I have a 1750 square foot house, and I'm assuming, if you're in Brooklyn, you have a much smaller footprint. You have a ton of plants, right? A thousand? I wonder how many plants my house would accomodate? Plants are so good for you! But I only have a couple dozen. Does it take a lot of work?
I didn't used to be uncomfy with bugs, but after a bedbug infestation... I'd never be able to convince my partner or myself to have bugs in the house like that. If I ever had a greenhouse tho...
I have thrips in my home, could You please tell me What the best benificial insects are specificially for thrips? I know I need to treat the soil with nematodes. But what is best used to eat the adult thrips on the leaves?
I don’t have a pest problem indoors yet, but if I did I’d definitely be all over the lacewing and mealy bug destroyers even if I’d have to sneak them in 😈. Thank goodness you haven’t suggested bringing in beneficial spiders, that would be a hard NO for me 😱.
So I am going to have to leave town for an unknown period of time, leaving the watering of my plants up to my husband. He knows nothing about plants. So to lessen his stress, I will be putting them all together in one TINY room so he doesn’t have to hunt them down. I have about 20 indoor plants. With cost not being an issue, would it be beneficial to release green lacewing larvae on my plants while I am gone to keep my crowded plant collection from getting infestations?
All the videos I’ve been watching about pests tell me how to treat the leafs and the plant. But what if I only see pests in my soil? When I pull the plant out of its container and examine the soil I see things moving and crawling around. They look like spider mites but I don’t see anything anywhere else. But I still treated the leafs and plant , but I also sprayed the roots and I want to rinse of the soil and put it I new soil. I never see anyone talking about doing this? Am I doing something wrong? What do you think?
Ok so I’ve been wondering and contemplating essential oils for my plants. They’re used to ward off bugs and improve health and well being for humans and animals and they come from plants so I don’t see why not... Have you any experience with them? Also I was wondering if there are any other lilies that do well in medium to low light? I have a peace lily and wanted to get some other varieties.
Hi Summer, just a thought, maybe universal law( not of mankinds law system) as in Nature...Mother Earth ect..Green lacewing was showing her/hid face😉 maybe a thankyou for what you do❤
Yesterday I saw a few lady bugs st my parents house. So I gathered them up and brought them home. My parents basement seems to be a breading ground for lady bugs (which is great for me and my plants) they always seem to have 5 million that somehow end up only in the basement of their house. We have had a ton of rain where I'm at in NC and I also love near a creek. I have seen a Palmetto bugs in my house since we have had a monsoon here for a few weeks. Do the palmetto bugs hurt the lady bugs and/or my plants. They look so much like roaches they kind of freak me out and never want then in my house but since they are here I'm scared my lady bugs and plants will get harmed
Hate to break it to you but the palmetto bug (if it's the one I think it is) IS a cockroach... And it loves moist areas, which is probably why it's in your mom's moist basement... Being a Blattodea (roach), it'll eat just about anything... Ladybugs won't harm but they can leave stains and a weird smell. Palmetto bugs leave yucky frass (insect poo)... But there's got to be some way to draw them in and capture them though it sounds like the basement is perfect habitat

I've just noticed little tiny bugs in all the saucers of my house plants! They walk fairly fast and can also walk backwards. As soon as I lift the plant from the saucer they freeze and then walk again after they feel it's safe. I touch them to see if they'll jump but they don't. They just freeze. I've tried putting water in the saucer to kill them, but as soon as the water dries up in the terracotta saucer, they begin walking again unfazed. Any idea what this post may be? I've been scouring the internet for hours like crazy to no avail.😭
