According to a video I saw done by Houser, you can measure compressed length when your bike is 1.5 inches off the ground. As you mentioned check for binding joints because you might need to limit the travel.
What ride height do you set your Rs at?
I usually measure by the pegs, and right before the frame rake comes in.

@12:47 I was hoping you would check... that your a-arms have extra movement in bump travel, when chassis is on 1-1/2 blocks so ball joints don't bind before shock bottoms

So the reason for the 12” is because of your a arm/front spindle setup, not because of anything special about 12”?

I don't think he explicitly mentioned this but he must be aiming for 10-1/2 wheel travel because 12 extended minus 1-1/2 compressed is 10-1/2.

12” is just the standard height to measure for extended. I think if you’re doing a desert build you use 13”

Iv read that its just for ground clearance purposes and for lowering center of gravity for turning. So desert racer would be more interested in ground clearance so 13" is the height that would be best and 12" would lower center of gravity for turning in mx or xc and still have good ground clearance so thats what i know. I think maultech atv has the info
