Couple of points: the sucky thing about de-Googling and de-coupling from other major players, is that sometimes there is a cost involved. For example, I'm using two apps that I'd recommend to replace a few of the apps you mentioned and those are: Automagic and Tasker (and one other I'll mention later). These two apps are, last I looked, five and eight bucks respectively; they are apps that allow you to program functionality into your phone that many other apps can do. Automagic has a literal flowchart style way of programming what they call "flows" but I haven't used that one much. I have more experience with Tasker. For example, I have placed a few radii over spots on a map of movie theaters in my town I regularly go to, and when my phone detects I'm in one of those spots, it will automatically turn my phone to vibrate mode; in essence, I don't ever have to remind myself to turn my phone off when in a movie theater. Simple, yet I really like it. Same with calendar appointments: as long as I put an appointment into my calendar, Tasker will turn my phone to vibrate mode during the allotted appointment time.
Both of these apps can also utilize pretty much every sensor the phone has -- the acclerometer can detect if it's going faster than say, six miles an hour, thus turning the phone into automotive mode, or whatever. There are a lot of ideas floating around on the net regarding clever things that other people have done with Tasker and Automagic; they can be quite sophisticated, really. Sensing whether or not the phone is face up or down, what time of day, light levels, pretty much everything and no need to root the phone either.
I never found a dialer app which worked for me for a long time, so I wrote my own whitelist. Any incoming call that is not on my contacts list will automatically go to voicemail. You can easily program Tasker to assign different ringtones to different numbers or texts; sure, many apps can do that now, but it's nice for me to have that level of control.
My current phone is a Galaxy S8, but I'm pretty sure it will work with more current kernels.
The last I will mention is a mapquest-type app called Navigon. It's from a German company, I think, and it was the most expensive one at around $40 US. However, I tried about six or seven different map apps and this one was the best supported for both US and European maps which can be downloaded and used off-line; which again, was far better than Google maps or Drive a few years ago. Maybe Google maps I think you can now download map sections buuuutttt... it's still using google services. Navigon also has some other paid services which Google does not have and I have found it to be up to date enough map-wise that it hadn't ever been an issue. But YMMV and all that...

You can still get notifications thanks to MicroG which is integrated in /e/
Maps app in /e/ is one of the best maps app and works better than OSMAnd

The "problem" with Google is that they have great products that everybody uses, and there is no alternative. Like Google search - yeah, there is DuckDuckGo, but it gives a whole other search experience, and while I find everything on Google in the first 5 lresults, well, not on DuckDuckGo, and I tried. Google Maps is superior - yes, there is OpenStreetMap, but Google Maps has SO MUCH user input too, that OSM simply doesn't. For navigation, there is also no real alternative with live traffic support. Waze is Google too... And RUclips, it has no alternative. All the other stuff has some great alternatives (Drive, Docs, Keep, Calendar, Contacts, Gmail, Photos), yet if you used them and want to change, you have to give up connectivity between those. And Google Apps is an ecosystem, and it's great. De-Googleing means everything gets segmented.

I agree with you on the maps side openstreetmaps just has less info a lot of the time, I have personally made the compromise of simply using other proprietary maps services (a combination of here WeGo and tomtom), as for other services however I would say it’s not so clear cut.
I have never really had a need for calendar, contacts or gmail as these services aren’t unique to google in any meaningful way and have widely available open standard alternatives.
Drive, docs, keep, photos and the rest of these cloud services made to replace local applications don’t fit into my workflow as I prefer to keep my files on a local server and edit documents, manage notes and photos, etc locally.
Search engine wise I was extremely uncertain when I made the switch around 3 years back, but just as Oğuzhan İçelliler has already pointed out english results at least have been perfectly useable and in fact at times preferable as duckduckgo seems to favour giving results from services like wikipedia over more obscure sites first which at least for me works out rather nicely. When looking at the rest of the search experience I far prefer duckduckgo, the interface of it is much better than the madness that the google interface seems to have become at some point in the last few years and bangs have surprising been an absolute game changer in my workflow, just being able to type in an ! plus a few letters to search other sites directly is amazingly useful and alone would be enough to make me choose duckduckgo over other search engines google search or others.
I can’t say I’m too impressed with many of the google translate alternatives, services oriented at specific markets like DeepL for German and a few other European languages, Yandex for Russian, Naver for Korean, etc work well for languages in their intended markets, but fall short for a more general purpose solution translations. The only one that I have found to be a real alternative is microsoft translate which works well, but at that point isn’t that much more private or open than google translate.
Finally youtube wise I completely agree on the fact there isn’t a real alternative. RUclips has been around for quite a while now, all it’s competitor from the early days have either disappeared or become very niche and anything new that pops up can never over come the issues of the network effect and finances. But at the same time youtube is also a far more open platform than many of google’s other services and is very usable in a convenient semi-anonymous manner. Download most of what you watch thru youtube-dl (or newpipe on mobile) and use the website for discovery and comments in a container or separate browser.

    • @R.-.
      @R.-. 4 года назад

I prefer HERE maps for mobile, since you can download the maps you want and use them offline which is far more responsive. It does the job for route finding and quickly finding your location.

All the big internet companies are not interested when the potential market is too small or to complicated and just doing nothing at all as simple than having to work out to work in these markets, I think one of the ways they figure out to give people a lesser service is, not providing via the ISP's IPv6 we had it and it's mostly going away again. IPv4 is making it easier to restrict things where they don't want people to have a full service.

Navigation is not the issue. A paper map and a compass would work just fine if not better. But, Google's ability to know where everyone else is can not be matched and this is the ultimate time saver. No other application can match Google Map's ability to monitor and reroute around time wasting problems like wrecks and construction. The way I see it, the smart thing to do is use the location services when needed and turn them off when privacy is needed. Perhaps having two devices is the best option. One device for critical communication that can be left on at all times without causing privacy issues. Another device for navigation in unfamiliar areas when time savings are critical that can be turned off, battery removed, and/or stuffed in a faraday bag when not needed.

What are you using today, for your phone?

I think waze is better than google maps and apparently that works with degoogled phones. Also, only apple has real encrypted text messaging. Ya, you can use 3rd party text apps but try to get all your friends to use them.

just go lineage + microG, been using it as a daily driver for a year and everything works great. Mozilla or DejaVu as location backend. Google offline maps is pretty much the only thing not working.
AdAway + AFwall+ if rooted, Blokada and/or Netguard if not. Carnet or Standard Notes for Google Keep, although Keep works fine with microG. DavX5 for Calendar and Contacts sync from Nextcloud. Aurora Store (anonymous sign-in) installed via F-Droid to get the Google Apps. Install Signal and Telegram from Aurora instead of their website or F-droid so they latch on to microG. Set up microG first thing so apps latch on to Google Cloud Messaging correctly, might bug out otherwise. Prey in case of theft. Wi-Fi Privacy Police from F-Droid.

AdAway is fantastic. So much so that Google banned it (they're not big on adblockers that block THEIR ads). Still on F-Droid, though!

100% correct on the google maps. I feel like I am in 2005. What I do is open a private browser and use google maps there to get the location. Then With the coordinates I can use OsmAnd to get there. I will never trade privacy and freedom for convenience ever again.

Aurora Store and YT Vanced. That's it.
RUclips Vanced is a modded YT client with MicroG for login.

I was an apple guy but have completely lost my trust in apple. I'm nether supporting android or ios at the moment, can't wait for the Linux phone era!! I did jailbreak my iPhone and started digging inside of the file system. I'm busy seeing what I can disable without messing up other important stuff until the Linux phones are a viable option. The best thing now on a non jail broken iPhones is to use a firewall (lockdown on ios) and block all telemetry domains from apple and also apps making use of unnecessarily scripts and domains.

I think your experience exactly shows what is wrong with the situation. You ought to be able to use individual services (maps, youtube) without buying into a whole eco-system that installs things you don't need, tracks you etc. The problem is we collectively decided 20-some years ago that we preferred a "free" ad-driven web to paying for services. But I don't know how you put that genie back in the bottle.
