The Meters are Funk legends and one of the first Funk bands. This song has been covered by a lot of people. The Meters were never on mainstream radio and never had huge hits but, Funk would take off in the 1970s. Just about every Funk band after them has credited The Meters for their inspiration. In 1969, Motown dominated the R&B charts, it was the year of Woodstock and the Love generation, and Elvis was hitting it with his comeback. A couple of years ago they were awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. "Cissy Strut" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. They have been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Gotta give you guys credit. I don't think I've ever seen a reaction to The Meters. Bravo. Some new funk groove bands that you might like are Vulfpeck The New Mastersounds The Bamboos All worth your while.
Yes, New Orleans legends! ! More roots of Funk please! Most bad ass funk track !!!!!!!! Curtis Mayfiekd- Superfly ( 72) 🔥 Title track from groundbreaking soundtrack. Curtis Mayfield is Hugely influential & a legend
Liked the song... Never heard it before. But it sounded like a song that would be in a 70's cartoon. Another just instrumental song. Was a pleasant listen.
There were several bands in that time experimenting with this type of music. In the late 70s we used to experiment with this music. Always went over well. Throw in a sax and it would be a killer.
For your next song from the 60's, I request a prog-rock song that can also be viewed as proto-doom metal, and it's by The Beatles! I Want You (She's So Heavy) was my favorite song of theirs, with passionate vocals by Lennon (and some nice harmonies), great bass work from McCartney, and that ever-increasing wall of doom from the heavy guitars in the final third. BTW, "heavy", in the song lyrics, in 60's slang meant cool, deep, intense and meaningful. Hetfield once said he was surprised how heavy this song was. And it is proggy too.
@Views From The 502! If you listen real closely to the Organ & Drum? You can hear The Beastie Boys Hip-Hop song "What'cha Want"! I wonder if they were influenced by this song from The Meters???
Two things: 1. John Mayer does a great cover of this song. 2. There's a website called Who Sampled. You can look up songs to see if anyone sampled them. This one has been sampled at least 73 times in some form.
Hi Guys. Requested songs for your reaction, please : Blue Oyster Cult - Cities on flame with rock and roll Mr. Mister - Kyrie Kansas - Carry on wayward son

The production is every bit as legendary as the playing. That's the great Allen Toussaint
This band is the forerunner of the Neville Brothers, and if you haven't heard them, you're missing the music of legends.
The Meters were Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones favorite band. Not to mention the funkiest band ever.
I discovered The Meters only a few years ago and had that experience you get when you want to kick yourself for not knowing something sooner.
Gotta give you guys credit. I don't think I've ever seen a reaction to The Meters. Bravo.

Saw them at Smilefest a festival that ran for maybe 10 years as a tribute to Jerry Garcia. They shocked me how fucking awesome they were.

The Beastie Boys sampled some Meters stuff. They also reference them a bunch in their lyrics.
They also released a couple of instrumental albums that sound a lot like meters… the mix up.
I love this jam!
I don’t know how y’all could throw that in the background. It slaps me in the face. “Low Rider” Neighborhood. Hot!

George Porter, Jr. still tours !! He is the bad bassist, the guardian of the groove.
