  • One of my most favorite games of all time is Thief: The Dark Project which came out in 1998 and just set into stone so many of the stables of stealth games for the next two decades. The way that you could approach each situation in a level, you could be stealthy in your own way, and Unknightly is basically a VR version of this and it knows it, which is great.

This hardbeat makes it really hard to watch with headphones, since I am paranoid about my headbeat anyways.

Dang, that's a bummer. Yeah, that heartbeat in this was pretty distracting. It was supposed to be a signal of my stamina getting low, but it popped up often when I was just walking around. I hope that gets sorted out.

Arm swinger makes VR look broken when in fact its just that movement system. Is there another method? What I have noticed is that games are now coming out that are demos of not so much technology proofs as they used to be but narrative proofs. As in they are demos of story and game play elements combined. Testing not the technology but how well they translate to VR. Compound is one like that. Graphics are super simple but it allows developers to work on game play and story instead of focusing on mechanics. This is what will grow VR. Interesting games not tech gimmicks. So what I believe will happen is that the really fun narratives will be proven and then this paves the way for large investment for a AAA game to be made. People aren't looking for killer apps. They are looking for killer narratives and game play that are then used in multiple games. This game is another step forward in that direction.

The arm-swinger in this is pretty rough. One of the first games I played with arm-swinger was Climbey (was probably the first one I played with it) and still think to this day that it does it the best. It's been a while since I've played Climbey, I should revisit it.
