    Professional tip from an actual chef. Instead of using water to reconstitute the dehydrated mashed potatoes, you can use milk instead. Makes them creamier and makes them taste even better.

    Fun fact-it’s a Cottage Pie because you used ground beef. Shepherd’s Pie has ground lamb. 😉

    Instead of using water to make the mashed potatoes use chicken stock much much better flavor

    This is made with beef, so it's actually called a Cottage Pie. Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb or mutton. It looks delicious, either way.

      Never heard of shepherds pie having lamb. Never seen a recipe calling for it either. You can use whatever meat you want anyway

    A version of Shepard's Pie its one my favs too , never used crockpot so much time saving this way. I also only use can cream corn and can regular corn drained. But yours looks wonderful

    Try taco seasoning instead, or plus the gravy mix. Add sour cream and butter to the potatoe and maybe a small can of chopped green chilies for a little spice.

      I don’t know what I did wrong, but my shepherd’s pie was soupy. Maybe I should have drained the grease after cooking the beef?

    I make mine with beef sausage on the bottom, then a layer of cabbage and then the potatoes. Juice from the sausage pulls it all together. Love it!

    I use milk and butter with my water on the stove and turn it down on real low and cook ln the and slowly cook the instant potato 's and stir them in you can then add more butter and you can't tell the difference I have to make them that way to get my youngest to eat them

    I thought this looked so good I decided to cook the same thing. I have it cooking in my slow cooker right now. My Jiffy Honey cornbread just came out of the oven (my first time ever baking cornbread in my life). I have always wanted to learn how to cook. These instructional cooking videos on RUclips are great I am learning so much. Don't get me wrong I am still in the very beginning stages of cooking and learning the basics, but I am having so much fun learning how to cook.

    I really liked how firm your meal came out of the crockpot. I might like to try beating an egg into the mashed potatoes and add some pats of butter on top of the potatoes before cooking. Am anxious to try your recipe. Thank you for posting it.

    Need to season that meat too. Salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. I love how your meals turn out in the crockpot. AND I’ve had instant potatoes and couldn’t tell. I’m glad you seasoned the potatoes. Good job.

      You can make this in under an hour in the oven. It's a basic shepherds pie with a lot of excess grease.

    They were interchangeable to begin with. Many of us make Shepard's Pie with browned ground turkey, corn and mashed potatoes. Meat first, in a casserole dish, then corn, then mashed potatoes. Then add some cheese, brown toasty and bubbly. It will be called Shepard Pie, irregardless of the meat or veges added. So leave all that cottage stuff out of the conversation. We don't cook with lamb - its not part of our culture and if it's available its way more expensive than beef or turkey.

    Paul my aunt used to use those instant potatoes all the time you just add some sour cream in the potatoes makes them taste just like every body will think they are potatoes you took the skins off boiled and cooked not from a packet

    try adding one pkg of onion soup mix with your gravy mix it’s more flavor. just once try it with a nice roast instead of ground beef it’s awesome

    I use my Dutch oven ... sautee the meat & onions ... pre heat the gas oven to 350° ... ready in less than an hour....

    I've never put in raw hamburger in the crockpot and I don't think that I would since my hamburger has more fat than hamburger others buy. Looks really good

    Isn't there grease from the hamburger in the bottom? Wouldnt you want to drain that out? Other than that, this looks very good.

      I doubt he drained it because he used lean (90/10) ground beef. If using something with more fat, definitely remove the excess fat. Paper towels would be an easy way to soak up the fat right in the crockpot.

    I prefer ground up Pot Roast to Hamberger for Shepherd's Pie.
