I Paid $25 for a BROKEN PS4 Controller - Copper Edition - No Power - Seller said the controller didn't power on at all so the first thing I checked was the charge port. The port had been bent out leaving a loose connection but that was only part of the problem. After replacing the charge port it still didn't work correctly so I tried replacing a chip on the motherboard that connects directly to the charge port. Luckily, replacing the chip did the trick and after that I just needed to give everything a good cleaning and put it all back together.

About This Video: I paid about $25 for a copper edition PS4 controller that the seller said wouldn't power on. After testing a few things and taking the controller apart I discovered that not only was the charge port faulty, but a chip on the motherboard needed to be replaced as well. I also found a lot of gunk that needed to be cleaned from around the buttons, etc. so the controller would work correctly again.
Big thanks to Ridge for sending me this wallet and supporting my channel! Here's their website if you want to check them out! > ridge.com/tronicsfix
TronicsFix ever wondered what that small hole at the back does. Heard it re callibrates the pad
Hi, about the wallet. I tried to use the discount code, however it does not work. Any suggestions? Thanks.
@@matsumoto_9562 It's basically a reset button for pairing.
@Jaime Beauchamp I didn't pay for mine but I do really like it. It's what I use now. I wouldn't have accepted a sponsorship from them if I didn't like it. It takes some getting used to because I had so much in my wallet before but I'm used to it now and love it.
@@Tronicsfix i just ordered one because of this explanaition. Kudos!
“If it’s not broke I will fix it until it is” bout right for me
That happened to me with my ds lite :) it wasnt broken and i broke it by trying to fix it lol
I see more disadvantages of that ridge compared to a wallet with the main 1 being no storage for receipts, so where do you store your receipt for that PS5 you've pre ordered? I'll never understand the allure of 1 tbh. Getting back on track awesome video :)
I don't store receipts. In fact I quite dislike receipts! YES! I'll be getting the PS5 as soon as I can.
@@Tronicsfix but what happens if a item you purchased is faulty or breaks and needs returning? without a receipt that becomes rather difficult. I still have receipts for my ps4 and 3ds cuz I like knowing how long I've had them for :) some receipts are stored in a folder too though :)
Good video, 💖 I don't usually spend time, fixing controllers.
Now this I can do except the soldering part
TronisFix: Lets see if we can fix it?!?
Me: I done know you going to fix it!!!
TronisFix: Likes my RUclips comment!
Me: 😊
my controller didn't charge so i wantef to fix it myself and I found the problem.. the blue/white cable that connect both halfs of the controller, had damagef pinns so i bent them straight its working now :)
Awesome job always pleased with your work my good sir
Can we please talk about the fact that he has a USB Stick and a Switch Battery in his old wallet? 😂
Ha, ha...lol...I've been waiting for this comment! Thank you for playing my game!
@@Tronicsfix I was instantly like: wait what? :D Nice detail!
I kind of thought soldering a chip on would require ridiculous levels of precision. Is it actually just a single contact connection? I assumed there were a ton of different contact points.
There are a lot of contact points. The one large one in the middle is the ground plane. All the small ones around the edges need to be soldered on too.
We have those chips at work. They are the easiest thing I have had to rework. Because of the large pad underneath it pulls itself to the center. No tricky alignment. They are qfn/dfn/btc type chips.
i have 2 controllers they have the same issue stick drift and the l3 doesn't workr right on one of them and they both are missin a piece
Hey, i really like your videos. One question: how do i eliminate those grease spots that remain behind the switch console? Thanks!!
I fixed mine by replacing new flex on the charging port..😊
Whats the chip that you replaced called and where you did you get it from ?
Can you replace my along sticks on my red ps4 controller how much will it be
Hey TronicsFix I have this ps2 fat here and the disc drive spins only for a split second and then doesn’t move at all. Is there any easy way to fix that to it always spinning
Hi I have a controller that turns on then a chip gets hot on the board and shut off the controller, in ur experience could it be the chip or a component around it ????
Most likely the chip
Ok thanks just wanted to be sure , you inspired me to get into gameing repair and I've been repairing controllers ever sense I've now fix and sold over 50 ps4 controllers
@@Mr805smoke Nice work!
Thanks ,I had a joystick drift question I believe I may have used too much heat when removing the solder joins and now have a constant drift is there a way I can use a jumper. Wire to a different part of the board
My ps4 CUH-1216a has a disk problem, when i put a disk in it doesn't take it and i also don't hear a sound, i checked the rollers and they are fine and when i just screw the disk in with a screwdriver the disk doesn't spin and doesn't make any sound. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?
Thanks in advance
Your videos have inspired me to start learning about electronics and attempting to repair my broken playstation one.
Love it!
Glad to hear that, Maybe I should repair my PS1 too
Same for me too I really want to get into this kinda stuff
Would highly encourage it too. It's a remarkable skill set to have. Be prepared to make costly mistakes. Just learn from them.
Since my hands are growing right out my own butt, Steve's videos only inspired me to watch more of his videos...
I fixed mine but i did it a different way i just switched the battery with another one and i started working again
That's a pretty common problem with them.
Did the same thing but the board was bad and killed the battery after the 2nd day
Oh yes you started to work
I had to switch the backplate with another controller because it wouldn't charge.
Lucky you, I still can't find a job that suits me well.
Looks sweet, great fix. Top quality as always.
Thanks man!
I had my ps4 controller next to me and i kept glancing anxiously at it throughout the video

When you're enthralled by the Ridge Wallet ad but remember that you live in a country that uses coins in addition to bills and cards
I hate coins! I carry very little cash at all. This wallet has freed up my back pocket!
Who puts coins in a wallet though
I use coins only for coffee vending machines and sometimes at buses in small stops, as they don't take cards. Euro coins have value, so they don't want to get rid of them and we have to use them sometimes.
@@exlibrisas maybe it's a cultural thing but I just throw coins in my pocket so my wallet isn't full of change
@@Tronicsfix I carry $60 cash max. But wallets keep it all secure and hidden from view of random people
Question: why did you switch the chips on the good and bad motherboard, instead of just switching out the whole motherboard?
For anyone looking for a fix, who doesn't have the soldering skills required in this one: assuming the controller works with a battery that's charged up, you can bypass the charging circuit by using a TP4056 battery charger directly to the battery, using the existing USB port as a power source. I did this method on my own PS4 controller, it works just fine, when you connect the USB cable the controller charges up normally. The only thing is that it doesn't work as a wired controller, and you need to sync it up in the PS4 settings.
Interesting. Hadn't even considered that.
TF: I'm going to fix it.
Liquid damage: to the bat cave!
I can imagine how much satisfying it feels when pressing those controller buttons after clean-up,
Satisfying stuff like meditation 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
Im so glad the usb port is so easy to change, I had to change it on my controller and I paid barely anything for a replacement on ebay and its worked perfect since. I love these videos as I feel a little more confident doing the easy fixes myself. Also replaced the analogue sticks on my joycons, that almost killed me with the fiddly tiny ribbon cables.
Yes, those a great repairs for almost anyone to try. Nice work.

Hey man, do you have a tutorial oh how to replace the sticks on the ps4 controller?
Thank you very much
Not yet.
Is it me or have the "faulty" product sales prices gone up for loads of stuff since lockdown? Seems people are starting to try and fix things now. Good for the environment, bad for my pocket haha! Another excellent job @tronicsfix
They've gone up like crazy!
Best o have done recently was paid £1 for a 3DS XL with a broken top screen, paid £13 for a new screen, and sold it for £65
I bought a *cO vID* 19 let’s see if I can fix it
Lol
I had a DS4's USB connectivity die on me just the other day after I cleaned it. I decided to exclude charging port and ribbon cable issues so I took apart my other old DS4 and imagine my surprise when after I reassembled that one it no longer connects or charges either. Both work and connect via Bluetooth but USB is completely dead. The fact that I have no idea what did it and that I lost two perfectly working controllers in one evening is driving me nuts.
Assuming that you weren't making revenue on this from youtube and the sponsor, what would you need to profit to make it worth your time in labor and spare parts?
Controller repairs are generally not profitable...for me. I know of people who do it as their business but it's just not worth the work and time for me. I do like doing them for videos because it's interesting for me and I think a lot of people can be helped by showing how to fix various problems.
@@Tronicsfix I have 6 ps4 controllers with bad analog sticks and I would love to have a "how to fix ps4 analog sticks" by someone who knows what they're doing. In my experience that's the first thing to go bad. Anyway, great videos!
@@joseyovani7777 The problem is that they are pretty difficult to replace. I'll probably make a video on it at some point but it's not something that the average person could do.
@@Tronicsfix thank you, I'll definitely keep an eye out for that. As someone who goes through a lot of controllers I wouldnt mind working on my own instead of replacing them often, hopefully others feel the same.
Cucumber just replace the white sensor wheel, it works most of the times!
Ur vids have thaugt me a lot, and has helped me. Now I repair my classmates stuff.
Glad these vids help!
Mee too😂😂
I have always tried to repair my classmates stuff, but a display replacement isn't that easy without a heat gun, so I didn't do it
You should’ve just re-labelled the board “badn’t” instead of crossing it out

Tronics i have a ps4 controller that has a problem, when i press the analog to run it doesn't run, it starts but stops right away. Can i fix it?
That usually requires the analog stick to be replaced which is a tough job for most people.
@@Tronicsfix can u do a video on a fix for this? Id like to try and fix it i don't use the controller anymore
@@purpleelf9931 Maybe
I often fix this issue. There is an "Easy" way.
On the Joysticks sides are porties (mostly Green) you can open them without soldering and clean them. If this not work you can also replace the white disk in the inside.
Search for ps4 Drift stick on RUclips. Gamingthesystem have make an good how fix Video about.
I replaced L3 analog on dualshock 4 v2, but not smooth to move, light to move, less ghost move, noise when prees L3. Buy a new dualshock 4 v2 for better to play.

The market is flooded with fake PS4 controllers here in Ireland
Yep...there's lots of those out there.
Any tips on how to spot them? Aside from the obvious like misprints etc?
PS4 controller ? I actually really like to fix them. I thought these were too easy for you but I am really happy to see a video of you fixing them !
I’m getting a drift on the right analog, maybe I should try to fix it until I break it
I got a question: instead of replacing the chip from the motherboard from a godd one to a bad one, why not replace the entire motherboard?
I love this kind of videos Steve. Where can you find the chip that controls the battery?
That chip probably just needed a reflow, I've done it a few times. The cheap lead-free solder cracks with the heat of the battery charging when people plug their controllers into a wall charger instead of using the console to charge. That other charge port would probably be fixed by just squeezing it with pliers to make it tighter.
Did you fix it
It solder crack because of fasr charger or normal charger

@@Tronicsfix just use lower bitrate/resolution but it'll still be educational, I guess. You can record higher quality video footage simultaneously if you wanna use it to later make a video out of it. It's a question if your pc can handle it, but you won't know till you try. :-)
can i plz get a ps4 plz my brother took his to collage
easier just to solder off the rumble motors and work on the pcb well away from the casing. what exactly were /are the chips you changed over? controller of some kind obviously(?)can you get those individually or do you need a donor board like you had?
The Chip you replaced, what chip exactly would that be? I seem to be encountering this same issue where I've determined its not the charge port, ribbon cable, and battery.
PS4 controllers were only $29.99 at gamestop when they have a good sale. Plus return policy is in effect for used products
half of the buttons of my controller dont work and those buttons work are not accurate. is it fixable? and if yes did it need any replacement.
the vibration motor of my controller suddenly starts vibrate and it vibrate for a hour and then my controller got in this condition
Hey if you wouldn't mind me asking
I bought a new controller but the sticks are too damn stiff and it's hard to aim in shooters
Anything I can do to make it more smooth?
I found at junk two ps4 controller, i could fix one of them and sell it for 35€... That is nice xD

I have no idea why I'm watching a controller repair during breakfast
Oh yeah, a video on how to fix the R1R2 buttons so that they click the way they are supposed to.
If that’s USB part was broken on mine I wouldn’t even notice because I use a charging station which uses the area next the the head phone jack

Ha, ha! So glad someone noticed that! Thank you for the comment.
Where could I get that chip from I've looked every where for one tronicsfix
Good video keep it up:)
But I'm still waiting for the box of broken iPods
It's scheduled for July 17 right now but that could change.
Thank You!!!!!
I'm always curious in videos like these what kinds of thought processes go into debugging faulty electronics. Is it mostly intuition from seeing the same thing before? E.g. if you've seen 100 PS4 controllers that don't charge before, and 90 of them were fixed by replacing that chip, then it's likely that said chip is broken in this one, too. Obviously you don't have the circuit diagram for each console you fix (at least not that I've seen in these videos) that indicate which pins are for what, but I also see you doing some manual voltage testing with your Nintendo Switch repairs. But then I also see you replacing a NS GPU occasionally and it still doesn't work afterwards.
I'm curious how much of this is guesswork, how much of it is experience fixing the same things over and over, and how much is insider knowledge of how the devices work (and where said knowledge is gained from; be it from on-the-job experience, questionably-legal obtaining of schematics, or just general engineering knowledge for how these devices are normally put together). Maybe a good topic for another video (or another course to go along with your soldering one! Monetization of knowledge is good thing, too)!
Regardless, thanks for the video and congrats on another fixed PS4 controller out there.
That's a great question and one that I think a lot of people misunderstand. Here's what I do (I've refined it over the years or working on electronics, cars and farm equipment):
1) Verify the problem/find the problem
2) Check for obvious faults
3) Try any easy/quick fixes or known fixes for similar problems
4) If none of that works then start diagnosing more in-depth
I've found this method saves a lot of time overall...sometimes it will take longer because I try easy/quick fixes first that didn't work but many times those quick/easy/known fixes do work and save a ton of time. As I gain experience in certain things I get better at the easy/quick fixes. Diagnosing a problem from the beginning can take a lot of time and isn't always necessary AND when you have no schematics or wiring diagrams you're guessing a lot of the time anyway.
Crikey look at the price of ridge wallets .. no thanks that is sky high :(
Hi, @tronicsfix my ps4 controller have a problem with the L1 does not work, I checked everything and nothing looks bad, do you think is the conductive film?, everything else works fine, is just the L1 is dead
Def. could be the film. Might be worth replacing since it's cheap
We actually use cash outside the US. Thats why the Ridge wallet is useless to me.
Idk if its just but just when ever he fixes something it just satisfys me.
Your wallet commercial has me realizing my wallet is the thing I have owned the longest. I think I got it like 25 years ago.
That's impressive!
Do people usually sell broken controllers for that much? If I was buying a used controller I'd expect a pretty hefty markdown in general, and if it was broken I'd expect it to be practically given away.
Broken tech...especially right now is going for very high prices. That being said I wasn't trying to get the absolute best deal. I was trying to find an interesting fix for a video. Some videos I try to buy at a really good price (like my upcoming iPod video) but sometimes I'm just trying to find something that will make an interesting video and help people fix their stuff.
I bought a broken red ps4 controller for $15 and it would show the light but not turn on. This was a $2 fix by buying new conductive film. Now it all works
Yep, that film wears out over time. Glad it was an easy fix!
My second controller right button keeps pushing down by itself but now i think i might gonna try and “ fix it “ myself
Oh i almost forgot since i’m Not an expert if you have Any tips it will help me 🤙🏻
I hope you get it working! Good luck!
Was wondering... if you were trying to repair the analogs, what brand would you use?
Can you do ‘How many can I fix’ with ps4 controllers👍🏽
You should fix more controllers. They are a lot easier for beginners who want to get into repairs.
Fix one that can broken or bad thumbsticks please
I'll make sure I won't melt the buttons. I can relate thought. I remember when my original xbox broke. Not the 360 or the the one. The original one. I broke the case trying to open it. God dam hidden screw under the sticker. Dang you

Thanks to this guy I saved £150 fixing my own 🎮 kudos - can't wait for his first ps5 vid
Somehow, watching your videos, I get this feeling that I might be able to buy broken controllers and repair them myself. 2 out of my 3 ps2 controllers failed though, so i think i won't try to tackle the "half of the buttons don't work" any time soon again.
Srly though, quarantine is making me take apart our old and broken electronics and try to fix them... (Well, walkman works again, ps3 is quiet again, one ps2 controller finally doesn't have a turning joystick anymore, and I took my ps2 apart to get a tiny piece of paper out I mistakingly dropped in there when trying to "mod" it at age 11 or 12... So, has been successful, didn't fix everything, but didn't break anything any more than it already was either)
You have inspired me to start fixing things myself but the problem is I’m in a financial crisis right now and can’t afford to buy the tools to start a business like this
screw the ridge wallet, stupid thing
Finally you upload new video keep upload👍🏻👏👏
I upload as much as I can...just not enough time!
