- This is the famous 5-star Al Shohadaa Hotel in Ajyad Street Makkah; those that went to perform Hajj and Umrah from the UK years ago will talk about this hotel in its hey days and will always recommend the hotel even to this day. But time has moved on and this is quite evident from the décor and interior of the hotel just like all other 5-star time-pieces. But I must state the hotel is making a good effort in order to maintain the hotel to its bygone days of being a 5 star; the hotel smells good, has good service, restaurant is small but ok and the breakfast buffet is limited but bearable.
This was the cheapest of the 5-star hotel we could find on a last-minute umrah trip as all the other hotels were very experience during December 2019. We stayed as two friends in the hotel but would not recommend for families with children and elderly alike as the 20-minute round walk from the masjid starts to wear you down. In addition, the road outside the hotel is far too busy with many taxis going around the circuit and also a coach stand being situated opposite the hotel as well makes it a hazardous area to stay; in fact, during our stay an elderly uncle was hit by a cab whilst walking towards the masjid. There is a couple of shops nearby as well as a money exchange and an expensive launderette around the corner and also a very nice Pakistani restaurant 2minutes walk from the hotel.
Saptco coach stand is right opposite the hotel and this was very handy for us as we done a day-trip to Madinah and took the VIP Saudi Government-owned Saptco coaches. It cost 220SAR (£41) per person for a return journey to Madinah and we chose to leave at 9am (the coaches are very prompt!) and returned at 2:30am the following morning. The journey by coach takes approximately 7 hours and is a non-stop trip but the coach provides light snacks, tea and coffee, free WiFi and every seat has a TV screen and a USB charger and not mention the very small on-board toilets!

These are the paths I walked five years ago. While walking along these paths, the mind got a lot of happiness, warmth and peace.
I miss the smell of this hotel...the walks to masjidil haram and the ambiance there. Last visited on 2016 with my late mother, i wish i could turn back time 🥺

I stayed here with my parents when were performing umrah in January 2020 before the lockdown. I really wish tat i will come back again for perform umrah n haj..

I stayed here in 2012. We use to take a shuttle service to the Harem so that we didn’t miss our salat. Then walk back to the hotel it was so peaceful.
I don't think they have shuttle service any longer as the road has been blocked off next to Hotel Elaf Mashaer

One question: which one is better? Al Shohada or Double Tree? Both have similar distance from Haram. Which hotel is easier to reach Haram to by walk?

Double Tree Jabal Omar, the walk has an incline to climb but the hotel is newer. Unsure if they have a shuttle service like the Marriot Jabal Omar

The hotel has aged and you would find that it is still the same, like a lot of hotels in Makkah, they do not upkeep the hotels to their original standard

It took us just over 12 minutes to walk to the haram but at busier times it may take longer.

It depends on times of day. The usual distance is around 10-15 minutes walk which may suit some people as this may be close enough for them
