  • I had never really heard the entire story of "The Little Mermaid", I only knew what the basic premise was and had read parts of it a long time ago. After reading the complete story this time, I realized what a very deep and actually spiritual story "The Little Mermaid" is. My favorite line in the story was: "Their own lightness bore them up through the air without wings". This was at the very end of the book, when the little mermaid became a spiritual being and saw hundreds of beautiful, transluscent creatures in the air above her. It was a very touching, meaningful part of this poignant, sweet story and really made me ponder about what life is like after living one's life on Earth.
I have always believed in a Heavenly Father and that there is a spiritual world that we will all go to, after our life on Earth is over. Even as a child, I knew there was a God. I spoke to him and felt that he was very close. I still feel that way. This story strengthened my belief in spiritual beings and that there is a life after this, a beautiful, truly Heavenly life, perhaps much different than we imagine. That is what was wonderfully surprising about the ending of this book, how the little mermaid's life turned out so much different than what she had expected. She imagined her life on earth would end and would be nothingness afterwards, but her life was so breathtakingly beautiful in the afterlife, such a wondrous, glorious surprise to her, and to me as well, as the reader.
Something else that I truly loved in reading this story was how elegantly and beautifully it was written. In the life of Hans Christian Anderson, he was immersed in telling and retelling fairytales and was undoubtedly surrounded by many wonderful peasants and villagers who shared magical and sweet stories with him. What an inspiring environment that must have been for him. Fairytales endear our imagination and help us escape the normal world. The descriptions in the story of "The Little Mermaid" of life under the sea are so lovely and picturesque, I felt as I were really there in the sea, with all the sea creatures and the King of the Sea. I could almost feel the movement of the waves and hear the soft silence of that deep blue world. The writing is so poignant and truly speaks to your soul.
My last thought about this wonderful book is that the little mermaid is such a sweet and good person, a young girl who dreams and wishes for a life above the sea, although she loves the beautiful blue world she lives in. On her fifteenth birthday, she is allowed to swim above the sea to finally look upon the human world. She is truly captivated by the amazing sights and sounds of this exciting place and wants so much to be a part of it. The story centers around her love for a young prince whom she sees as he is celebrating his sixteenth birthday. She is truly endeared to him and is later willing to give up her life as a mermaid to become his bride. It is such a sweet, lovely part of the story and the book is centered around this touching theme.
The little mermaid actually saves the prince during a terrible storm when he is out at sea in a ship, but he does not realize later that she was the one who rescued him from the depths of the ocean. This story is so touching and so heartwrenching, I felt deep sorrow for the little mermaid and realized that so many creatures and fellow human beings go through such sorrows in this life, it is something to ponder and pray about, that we might be able to releave the suffering of others if we can. "The Little Mermaid" is a beautiful story, amazing as well as filled with melancholy moments, too, but truly a memorable story, one that I will cherish and always appreciate and ponder upon.
I am also grateful for the lovely and very unique illustrations in the book by Lisbeth Zwerger, although most of this particular version of "The Little Mermaid" is text. Her drawings and paintings are so soft and beautiful though, I hope you will take the time to search out her other books so that you can enjoy her wonderful talent as an artist. She has illustrated so many books and is an award winning illustrator.
I hope you enjoyed this reading of "The Little Mermaid". I loved reading it and learning of what the story was really about. There were a few very small parts in the story that were a little too gruesome for me to read, so I passed over those. I hope you are not offended by that, but I wanted to stay close to the beauty of the story and not delve into the more difficult parts to fathom. All in all though, "The Little Mermaid" is definitely worth reading again and again, if simply just to immerse oneself in it's lilting and lovely beauty and breathtaking writing.

@@natureartists You know, in a similar vein, I'm reminded of a variant quote that originally goes back G. Stanley Hall: "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."
