I think her as a kid being happy about her scar was just her confirmation in her mind the she was strong enough to hang with the boys. I know for me as a tomboy I was always trying to do that. Validation like you said.

I love these now that we're grown. I actually didn't like this movie cause it felt toxic the first time I saw it. I disliked Quincy from the jump and I am still trying to figure out why Monica was wrong for not breaking curfew. That made me so mad. I agree 100% with your assessment. I also saw Monica as rebelling against her mom because she wasn't what Monica wanted her to be and treated her as such. I loved how Alfre expressed her regret but also her joy in her choices and gave Monica the push to use her fearlessness to go after what she wants even if it's toxic.

This was my favorite movie growing up. But as I watched it back as an adult it just upset me how Monica was so pressed over this dude who I felt like was paying her dust. I wonder how Lena (Monica’s sister) reacted when she told her that Q pushed her down. Lena’s the older sister, if I remember correctly, right? Because if I found out that some neighborhood boy pushed my little sister so hard, that she ended up cutting her face, we are about to have a huge problem! 👊🏽🥊

I took that smirk while the mom was cleaning it as a “warrior” type of scar--her being good at basketball and playing street ball or even just being able to play with the boys so to speak. @pimpcesscorpio Год назад +1

@@unfiltered_unapologetic_32 and did he not break up with her right after that? Monica wanted to keep dating. Would it have been more toxic to stay and end up physically cheating getting drunk asf during his career or realize at his 19 year old age this isn’t working and I’m leaving forget it? They say if it’s real you always come back together. And Lol that’s my point in HS and in college b4 he found out who his father was they were good. I don’t think him seeing her with another man and getting jealous was toxic he didn’t even play it tough. Not only did he lowkey like her, she was a tomboy who hed never seen with a boy since they dated for those 2 minutes when they were 10. If Monica seen Quincy with another girl got jealous alot calling them floozies and such even though she was used to seeing him with women. Even in the future as full adults they were not toxic. I guess it’s just to me. You could look at them both even in adulthood and tell they still loved each other what do you mean he only liked her when they were teens? Regardless if he got mad at her for not wanting to ride his bike @ 10 or getting mad because he felt she wasn’t there @ 20… he broke up with her after rather than staying in it.

My one gripe with Q is that he calls Monica selfish!! He frames their breakup as her not being able to be there when he was the one who became emotionally distant & selfish!! She checked in, she called! I felt bad for him but he truly took it out on Monica!! And he never really apologizes for it, imo. Quincy should've been the one knocking on her window in the middle of the night! They could've done a much better job at making Quincy accountable for the pain he caused Monica in college during that final scene.

I come from that era..."Just got paid" was out when I started going to clubs at 19. So I completely understand that hard bravado shell Q was trying to maintain was an influence from his Dad, but also just how men were "supposed" to be.
And having something soft and pretty on his arm was like having the right car.
He always love Monica but didn't want to be clowned for being with the tomboy/ball player. Notice going off to college changed that -- not necessarily the sex.
For Q to eventually become the sideline cheerleader and let his woman have the shine was him truly being his own man DESPITE the era. Mr. Mom was a new concept and not really popular yet.
This classic will always stand the test of time.

Quincy's perception of women came from his mama. I say that as the only child and son of a married set of parents in the 80s whose father never lacked attention from women. My dad wasn't an infidel, but he also didn't shy away from the flirtation of other women -- women that my mother would refer to as "Alpo eaters" among other terms. So I think Quincy's views of women were negative because he, obviously, was a Mama's Boy and didn't like other women disrespecting his mother. If Quincy got his negative views of women from his father, then his rejection of his father for five years would make no sense.

Fun Facts: Sanaa Lathan & Alfre Woodard were also mother & daughter in Something New & The Family That Preys, Sanaa & Regina Hall were also in The Best Man, Disappearing Acts & The Best Man Holiday, those two & Monica Calhoun were in The Best Man, Sanaa Lathan & Boris Kojoe were also in Brown Sugar, Omar Epps & Gabrielle Union were also in Almost Christmas. Love & Happiness is a staple in black movies. It was played in Menace II Society, Jason’s Lyric & Madea’s Family Reunion.
