When I was 15 years old I typed out the lyrics for my father. He loved this song so much he rewrote it for the Highland Bagpipes. When he passed in 2013 my mother had his wallet and pulled out the piece of paper with the lyrics that I had typed out for him. For 20+years he keeped that in his wallet. So when I hear this song I sit and cry for my dad...

Not everyone is filled with anger and I personally know no-one I want to kill. This song is about friendship on a personal level. I am guessing "words of violence" could be translated as "angry words).
It is a horrid world, no question but it would be nice to think you could keep friends till old age and you might bring one another comfort.

...It's the only band I have never heard of being involved with drugs... I have always been fascinated by its members GENUINENESS and MODESTY - especially the girls...
They were two old married couples when they started (not exactly but they were mature with children), I saw something recently: Carole King and James Taylor talking about the pitfalls of fame and life on the road. The difference between them was Carole had children at 18; James struggled with drugs and loneliness.
Being a parent means getting up at 6am at the latest. That kind of precludes a druggy life-style. Agnetha was a hands-on parent. Frida, I am not so sure but she was sensible. You are right though, they were genuine and modest. Anyone who worked with them would vouch for that. They were also kind and low key.

Seriously, they have held out for a long, long time. They all moved on from the original two couple friendships. All four are seriously pragmatic individuals who could not possibly envisage themselves in an O2 stadium.

Back then the "serious rock fans" laughed at ABBA for producing 'bubblegum' music and Mickey Mouse tunes and lyrics-- it was not 'cool' to admit to liking them. At some point when they're old and grey and vulnerable they will recognize the beauty of songs like this one and realize what we ABBA fans have known all along-- that these songs are the anthems of our lives and are linked directly to the deepest of human emotion. You're not going to want some screeching headbanging music when you mature and are doing your soul searching and taking stock of your life. Just a thought....
When I was Very Young my Mother was into ABBA & John Denver so us Kids Learn't those Songs cause they were always Playing - but I Grew up and Liked Metal, Rock, Grunge etc. - Heavy Stuff... Now I'm Older and I Absolutely LOVE ABBA & John Denver.
Wanda I agree. I actually loathed punk: a lot of middle-class boys jumping up and down, screeching hate-filled lyrics; basically gobbing at society. ABBA at their worst produced and sang exquisitely some of the best pop music ever produced, and at their best, composed and sang really interesting, songs linked directly, as you say, to the deepest of human emotion. Their songs live on. Punk? Johnny Rotten is the only name that arises from the mists of time. Those guys had two years, tops.

We played this song at our wedding reception in June 1985. We gathered all of our friends and family in a circle around us as we prepared to leave on our honeymoon. Still married in 2019 and this song has such a special meaning for us, as do many of the ABBA songs. Still surrounded by many good friends. We can face life together, the way old friends do!
A sad update. My wife passed away this year from esophageal cancer, one day short of our 37th anniversary. In my grief, I am surrounded by many good friends who have been there with us through the times of joy and times of sorrow. This song now takes on new meaning for me.

Sherwin Extraordinary comment. Are you saying that all your friendships have been based on finance. What does that translate to? Who picks up the bill when someone else invited you to the restaurant? I think people betray you but they rarely do for financial reasons.
Maybe Paul Getty had to wonder about all those "friends" he had around him. Most of us only have a few and we can mostly discount financial motivation.

I re replied saying this is about friendship but actually, you are right. It is more authentically about a long term marriage. Very few friendships go the distance but I have seen many marriages that do. There is more invested for starters: romantic love, friendship, home, children, families, jobs, shared income, shared decisions. Most importantly, though, is dailyness, habit. You grow into one another. Friends can fall out on a whim and have no need to see one another ever again.
Only those who have reached perfection could make such a masterpiece, and this is ABBA!
