if you are wondering this lightsaber will be available in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Hollywood Studios in Florida and California. Currently you can go to a store in Galaxy's Edge and buy a replica lightsaber for around 200 dollars. There a few option. When I went there I got Kylo Ren's and Anakin Skywalker's. You can also buy the replicas in downtown Disney. About the retractable lightsaber this is all information that I have heard of and cannot confirm is true.

Hacksmith actually made a working lightsaber using a plasma torch. It is an actual lightsaber that produces 4,000 F! Probably not what the Disney was showing since it would have to be kid safe.

Coming out of the hilt is 500x easier than the retracting, heck even toys have done just a basic spring loaded version. Make the hilt metal and add LEDs inside and apparently everyone freaks out about it

The original saber was Retro Reflective Tape on a pole with stage lighting hitting it. Simple, effective illusion. The extending Disney Saber is Retro Reflective Tape on an extending tape measure with stage lighting hitting it. If you want to build one like that, I suggest a telescoping car antenna covered in retro reflective material, with a base LED light to illuminate it.
I bet they're gonna start using this toy for their films instead of placement models where they cg out the white base. Imagine how easy it would be for them to use this toy as a reference for lighting and to suddenly create it, instead of having to guess what it would look like and cg it accordingly

The way it seems to be built I don't think it could be used for combat. And I'd also have concerns about those internal mechanisms getting messed up over time or if you dropped it. Still really cool though and maybe some future version could address the above issues
Tape is totally like the force! It has a good side and a bad side (unless it is double sided, of course), it is what gives a DIY maker the power, it can surround us and binds the galaxy together.

Without seeing the whole video I’m guessing it’s some kind of translucent silicon gel/rubber that can be squeezed into the handle and wrapped around an inner shaft that can be extended like an old radio antenna. The light shining through masks any wrinkles on the gel skin.

I was thinking the roll up mech too, wasnt sure if its a tape measure style or (and sorry for the comparison) more of a condom style ring rolled up. I feel like the LEDs may be more of a fiberoptic device. The light is in the hilt, but travels up the blade via the defused filter. As we can see a brighter glow at the hilt and it dims a bit near the tip of the blade. I also noticed they dont seem to show it retracting, and those who saw also have not seen that. Its as if there is still an issue getting it to retract properly. That is of course the hardest part, making sure everything lines up and doesnt jam.

For everyone planning to go here, don’t get your hopes up. Don’t get me wrong, it was the COOLEST experience I’ve ever experienced in my whole entire life. It literally felt like we were in the movie doing side missions, being a part of the main story, helping the resistance or the first order and helping Rae and Chewbacca escape along with so many other things. But If you are going thinking your gonna cosplay and feel that AMAZING feeling of carrying around your light saber and your awesome cosplay outfit…..then your dead wrong. Absolutely NO LIGHT SABERS ALLOWED, NO MASKS ALLOWED. What makes me so mad is that they SELL high quality EXPENSIVE light sabers.(for example you can only buy 2 per person and me and my new ogre got 4 custom built light sabers but us totally at around $1,300) but the second you have them out, you are gonna get approached by the staff like you have a real weapon. Don’t get me wrong, I can understand they are worried light sabers will be swung by kids and hurt somebody but AT LEAST let us carrying them. They should have a “no swing rule” or a “don’t turn your light saber on but you are more than welcome to walk around with it to feel apart of the story. It makes me so mad they want to make all this money off of selling them and then as soon as you get them out, you get in trouble. I don’t even collect light sabers, I only bought them for the purpose of being immersed from the story at the hotel just like everybody else who bought one, only to be told you have to put them away the instance you take them out in a calm manner just to walk around with. It’s every kids dream to walk around with a light saber while your at the galactic star cruiser. I’m 26 years old and my Star Wars hobby died when I was 12 but the hotel sparked that love for Star Wars since it was so immersive but to be aggressively approached just for holding it safely while walking around just made me very upset and scammed for $1,300…

I was wondering if they could use a wire like nitinol to make something to retract and extend by heating it? I wonder if there's an alloy that could behave like nitinol but can also get super hot enough to cut through solid objects with ease?
3:39 I'm glad videos like these show the steps necessary to get in your car, start it and get going. Everytime I try to go somewhere I face the notoriously difficult process of forcing myself to remember what's next... do I hit the gas and then switch to drive and then I open the door to let myself in? ugh, such a complicated process. Thankfully we're shown here how to do it. That's what I want to see in a video about lightsabers... footage of unrelated topics.
I feel like it could be done with a very light fabric tube and fan forcing it in and then out with blowing and suction inflating and deflating it. Then a bright led illuminating it from in the unit. Kind like those tall blow ups you see at car dealerships. Kinda.....
this.. I'm thinking they could roll the tube up like a condom.. I think this could be done with acrylic fabric and some finely clustered LEDs each attached to a segment of an extendable/collapsing arm that's extended or collapsed by the inflation/deflation of the tube.. or maybe the LED is a LED Filament strip..
my guess is it works like those cheap collapsible ones to some extent, just done in a flashier style where the blade functions like those pop up metal staffs that were all the rage? and the light either hides the seams or perhaps there is some kind of stretchy membrane that goes over it that stretches out when the blade extends. i am thinking it must be the former of the 2 given that it might not look right when it is retracted back into the blade as rubbery membrane material might do something goofy when getting pulled back into the handle that could break the immersion.
I think you could have done it better by just buying a toy sabre hilt, gutting it, buying a couple of tape measures, stripping them down to the basic components, and just reforming it into the hilt, if you wanted to have it extend you could just put a couple of actuators that connect to a turning shaft that would push the blade out. Otherwise, you could repurpose the switch on the toy hilt to be the locking mechanism on the tape measure.

I was wondering if they could use a wire like nitinol to make something to retract and extend by heating it? I wonder if there's an alloy that could behave like nitinol but can also get super hot enough to cut through solid objects with ease?
This also cuts the costs for VFX lightsabers

3:39 I'm glad videos like these show the steps necessary to get in your car, start it and get going. Everytime I try to go somewhere I face the notoriously difficult process of forcing myself to remember what's next... do I hit the gas and then switch to drive and then I open the door to let myself in? ugh, such a complicated process.
Thankfully we're shown here how to do it. That's what I want to see in a video about lightsabers... footage of unrelated topics.
I feel like it could be done with a very light fabric tube and fan forcing it in and then out with blowing and suction inflating and deflating it. Then a bright led illuminating it from in the unit. Kind like those tall blow ups you see at car dealerships. Kinda.....
this.. I'm thinking they could roll the tube up like a condom.. I think this could be done with acrylic fabric and some finely clustered LEDs each attached to a segment of an extendable/collapsing arm that's extended or collapsed by the inflation/deflation of the tube.. or maybe the LED is a LED Filament strip..
my guess is it works like those cheap collapsible ones to some extent, just done in a flashier style where the blade functions like those pop up metal staffs that were all the rage? and the light either hides the seams or perhaps there is some kind of stretchy membrane that goes over it that stretches out when the blade extends.
i am thinking it must be the former of the 2 given that it might not look right when it is retracted back into the blade as rubbery membrane material might do something goofy when getting pulled back into the handle that could break the immersion.

it works like two half circle shaped tape rulers going up and down, hence it looks cool, but is fragile
I think you could have done it better by just buying a toy sabre hilt, gutting it, buying a couple of tape measures, stripping them down to the basic components, and just reforming it into the hilt, if you wanted to have it extend you could just put a couple of actuators that connect to a turning shaft that would push the blade out.
Otherwise, you could repurpose the switch on the toy hilt to be the locking mechanism on the tape measure.
