Got a question - how do you link call an Alexa Routine from a Smartthings Button? Is it possible. I can call a routine from a Motion Sensor or a Contact Sensor, but not a button. Is it just not possible?
Gps and geofencing with SmartThings is 100% accurate and works 100% of the time. Been using it in the old SmartThings app and even the new one. I have it setup to send notifications everytime a geofencing automation is ran and for the longest time i tracked and made sure. If the geofencing automations were not working i would have known based on how i use it
We must have the same house build! The living room and kitchen look identical except the brick work is different. I think the house design was called the Windsor? It definitely started with a W. Lol

I'd also suggest using virtual switches to store "states" and Smartlighting app (as it's IMHO still the only reasonable solution for light automation besides writing own scripts). Together with Smartlighting, I use the virtual switches to override some motion based automations. E.g. if I want to freeze my light setting after I select one (via Ikea remote) and don't want the "on motion detected" automation to kick in (to potentially change my light intensity or even color temperature) I also, before going to bed each day, I use one IKEA TRADFRI switch to turn off all the lights and to keep them turned-off during night (based on one virtual switch I toggle). This switch gets re-set (to "off") each day at 6Am and there's usually anyway enough light after that so my lights will not turn on during day-time (I use LUX value from the HUE Outside motion sensor to enable yet another virtual switch "Daylight" + some hysteresis in place to smooth out the oscillation at the edge-values so the virtual switch doesn't react to minor LUX changes), I also use arrival sensors (despite them being what they are) to enable "welcome lights" at home. But only if there's nobody at home prior to my arrival (yet another virtual switch used there). It wouldn't be nice if my wife is sleeping at home already. I arrive late, and all the lights in the home will turn on :-) I also converted Smartthings leak detector to a power outage monitor (just one normally closed 230V relay plus basic soldering) and I keep my 4G router and Smartthings Hub and Arlo system running out of UPS so I know when there's some power outage at my house :-) And yes I bend the Smartthings a lot. And yes I could rather write the scripts, but I still find it more manageable to use UI. PS: I run somewhere around 70zigbee devices in my house. And some other creative solutions besides those I described already...
3:35: why not use weather info to do something truly useful - such as raise or lower your automated blinds, in order to maximize heat/AC power savings? 6:40: most dishwashers only require 120v, with relatively low current. A better choice than a dirty/clean button would be to use a smart plug to monitor power usage. Combine that with a contact sensor, and indeed the device would KNOW the dishes are clean when you open it rather than relying on a human to tell it so. For Alexa, your ST routine would say: current draw > X watts for Y minutes = closed virtual contact. Dishwasher Contact sensor opens then opens that virtual contact sensor. Alexa sees this, and makes the announcement that the dishes are clean. I will be doing that exact automation tonight
When the presence sensors detect everybody is sleeping or outside the house, the system shuts off all the water pipes so if there ir a leaking toilet , no water is wasted
Excellent video, as always. Couple questions, first on the "Left It Open" smartapp: 1. I only see an option to monitor one door/window in the smartapp. Is it possible to monitor multiple doors/windows? 2. How are you making the announcement? I assume you've got stuff going on behind the scenes because I don't see that option w/in the app. For the trigger an Alexa Routine from SmartThings article, can Alexa Guard be triggered on when ST is in away mode?
If you are going to use the SmartApp you would need to create multiple of them. If you did have a lot of window/door sensors you could also use webCoRE. You could do the same thing and have much more flexibility. I'm just receiving the push notification from the SmartApp. Again if you wanted a speaker announcement you could use webCoRE. Yes you could set the Alexa Guard to be triggered from SmartThings using that method. That's a great idea!
Smart Home Solver any how to on the webcore announcement? I need Alexa to announce to the whole house when my kids leave the porch door open so the dog doesn’t sneak in.
What is the maximum distance can the contact multipurpose sensor be set at to activate? I want to attach to the robot mower and use it to open a roller door.
Hey Reid. Great video like always! Do you have a more in-depth writeup on your blog about the dishwasher automation or can you share your webcore piston?
Thanks for you video.Automation is amazing, We focus on Smart Sensor Alarms, They can work independent or control by smart phone .We hoping to provide safety protection for more people, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, Door Sensor, motion sensor, etc.A small item may be able to help many families stay away from disasters.
This video is amazing. Thanks for sharing. Very pertinent tips that can be adapted to many ideas. The concept of expanding alexa devices to smartthings via the routines, the concept of virtual switches (which become long term boolean variables) these are great ideas! One of the best home automation video.
Hi Reed, I need a big favor. I changed homes and had to unplug all my devices. After 2 years I've hooked up everything and noticed the smartthings app has changed, it had an option of setting up the weather report through the app. Essentially it was a time trigger announcement that will tell the weather report for today through zip code and announcement on Sonos speaker. In the new app I can create a time trigger but it has to be a pre-defined message. Is there any way to do it through the new app?
With Samsung no longer selling a hub, I'm assuming that means the end of Smartthings. Have you started to convert to another hub? Or are you going to wait until Samsung officially pulls the plug?
Anyway to automate led light for the stairs? I was thinking of getting 2 tradfri motion sensor to pair with one tradfri outlet plug (which can be done per ikea's faq). I will plug the led power to the outlet plug so when I go up or down the stairs the motion sensor will be triggered to turn the led light on. My issue is how do I turn the light off after 5 mins?
I enjoy your videos! I'm constantly learning something new with you. My question regarding the dishwasher... Is it necessary to have open/close sensor? I have the toggle switch from Ikea, but Bose only makes the announcement if I manually press the buttons. Plz advise... Many thanks!
Thanks Antoan I appreciate it! Yes if you want the announcement when the door is opened then the multipurpose or open/close sensor is needed. So first you would need to create a virtual switch. That’s basically a switch that only exists in the app that you can turn on or off. The button allows you to toggle the virtual switch on and off. Then the automation is simple, IF the virtual switch is on (aka the dishes are clean) AND the open/close sensor is opened, THEN announce on the speaker a warning that the dishes are clean. That way if the dishes are dirty and the door is opened no announcement is made. I hope that makes sense.
Hello! I like the idea with the Smarthings outlet power monitoring and I have been thinking about the same/different use cases for the washing machinge, dishwasher, tv etc. but I do not want Google or Alexa to turn of them ever. As we in the family have gotten used to "turn off everything" and turn off specific room. One workaround could be Google homes custom routine, not to turn these off but do you have any other idea or have you encountered this?
Yes a custom routine that turns everything off with a voice command would work well. SmartThings used to have the ability to remove what devices are available to Alexa and Google Assistant. SmartThings updated recently and removed that ability which is frustrating. So yes a custom routine is the best.
Most modern dishwashers have a light on the instrument panel that turns on after it has completed a cycle and off when the door has been opened to indicate that the dishes are clean.
It's awesome seeing you guys talk about and creating new automation with Samsung's SmartThings. I'm just sitting here with my dumb IKEA hub an sensors because Samsung won't sell SmartThings in my country :/ I've even stopped buying smart home stuff because it's frustrating having to use google home routines that are way off being automations and the IKEA stuff that are just dumb turn off/turn on sensors or remotes... I have some wi-fi & zigbee plugs, but they are pretty boring to work with as I just use voice to turn lamps on/off
Really want to get started on creating a smart home system. But have internet service through at&t, and use their gateway. Will I be super limited in what I’m capable of?
I am using one of the multipurpoes sensor on the garage door(on the settings ı choose its not used on garage door so i suppoes to able to be sure about its fully closed cause its using the magnet sennsor whan its off) however its constantly show my garage door is open so it fucked my automations then i had to deactiavete them. Do you know why its happening?
Is it possible to turn the light on when I enter the room and turn the light Off when I leave just by using one Sensor? And is there a button i can use to trigger alexa routines?
These are very creative ideas, the dishwasher one is super helpful. I’m not too familiar with the samsung smart things hub, but i may actually have to check it out now. The ending was hilarious “You are a failure of a husband” haha 🤣
Could you recommend some simple smart buttons that would be cheap and would not require to replace the existing switch? (Battery powered) I am having trouble actually finding some even after research. Thanks!
You can have SmartThings send you a push notification. If you wanted to have it announce out lout on an Echo you would need to create the whole thing in webCoRE.
Hello, I have a Tecking Smart Plug, which monitories the watt of the thing connected. I can see when the connected tv Is on or off...but how do I use this as a trigger for a routine? TV ON--->Lights on. thanks
Is it me or have the Smartthings motion sensors from Samsung disappeared? Nobody seems to have them - I’ll check out the IKEA ones, maybe if I order a couple I can get some free meatballs! Congrats on the Skillshare sponsorship.
@@expressfashionman89 same here, I’ve literally only seen this happen once or twice in my lifetime. In my case, having a sensor like that would be 100% wasteful lol
Wi primary use apple devices, google hub, hue lights up and eufy cameras. I’m going to get into Lutron Caseta switches but would like your input on which sensors I should use? I was going to get smart things but I use apple products and don’t know how well smart things and HomeKit integrate? Thanks, love the video’s!
Thanks Corey! I like HomeKit but I don't know a lot of sensors that work with it. I looked for some in the past and I didn't find a whole lot. Maybe it's gotten better recently. That's a big reason I use SmartThings. I know SmartThings isn't integrated into the Apple devices like HomeKit but the app still works well. And if you get everything automated you hopefully don't have to use the app too often.
the xiaomi aqara stuff is awesome and cheap as beans. battery life lasts forever. I have about 20 motion sensors that I hacked to have a cooldown of only 5 seconds and after 2 years they are still running strong on the same battery that they shipped with! best thing they work with everything else! Home assistant!
I've only done basic smartthings automations, so the dishwasher one is throwing me for a loop. I'm hoping that you can clear up a few questions. I have the Ikea dimmer set up and interacting with a Simulated Switch to set it On/Off. Are you using WebCore at ruclips.net/video/HDdwLi68N2E/видео.html to set up more in-depth conditions? And the Simulated Switch shows up as a device in Alexa, but I cannot select it as a trigger for a routine. I see you have a description of 'Simulated Alexa Switch', is this a different type of virtual device? I can't find it as an option when creating a new device. Thanks,
Great video. Love the idea of coverage using multiple motion sensors as well as the dishwasher solution. I have been looking for a good way to alert on clean dishes with home assistant and never thought of a sensor on the door to trigger the notifications.
Question. I bought a smart things hub, but so far all the things I have bought won't connect. For example some lights they don't show up as a product supported even though they are z wave. Same with my alarm system. Any ideas or tips for me.
1st love your channel, very helpful and I’ve recommended tons of friends to subscribe so keep up the great work 👍🏼 2nd question for you, do you Know a good simple system that will allow me to turn my water valve off if a leak is detected using SmartThings ?
I saw you use some Tradfri devices... Do you use the automated blinds through the smart things hub? I just many ikea items but would rather just use one hub, like St...
@smart home solver . Can you help me solve this? I want a physical button ir icon on phone to trigger a motion sensor rule to turn a light on when motion is detected. I want to turn the rule off and on from that physical button when I am watching movies late at night to warn me someone is coming. Ideas?
You could do this with webCoRE with a piston that triggers the light to turn on (and off after a certain amount of time) based on the state of either a virtual switch thats triggered by a physical button or tracked within the webCoRE piston itself.
Great video and information as always! I have a question on how to automate the bathroom exhaust fan to shut off after 20 min from when it is turned on. I found the setting in the new SmartThings app and went to the device and selected timer and set it to 20 min after turned on. The first time I did this, it worked. Now it doesn't shut the fan off. When I went back in and looked at the settings for this switch, it doesn't show anything is set. Am I missing something?
If you're talking about the "timer" under the switch itself that's only for the one time you set it. You would need to setup something for more advanced automatons. You could run webCoRE right on SmartThings which will allow for you to easily accomplish this along with having the ability for a lot of other more advanced automations. There may be other smartapps available that allow for advanced lighting control as well. I took at look at the "Smart Lighting" smartapp from smartthings but it doesn't seem to be able to accomplish the turn off after 20 minutes of being on.
enjoyed the video, some good ideas going on here... but could you make a video to show how to set some of these up... like the connection to your Bose speaker
Guys, do you know, which apps/ecosystems except for homekit, tado, mi home (limited) and smart things have geofencing. Like when you can base automations on who is at home
Hey Reed, followed your instructions to have an Alexa simulated switch be controlled with smartthings automations. However, it doesnt work. I successfully added the device handler and added 1 "simulated Alexa Switch". I made a routine within the alexa app that when it's "closed" it turns the Echo device volume to 1. when i manually run the routine in the routines menu, it works, but if I go into the alexa devices list, scroll down and find the "simulated alexa switch" (it says connected via smartthings) and turn it on or off, nothing happens, and the routine doesnt run. and obviously, in smartthings, toggling it does nothing either. is there something i missing as far as it being a switch or a contact sensor or what-have-you?
This is an issue that has popped up very recently and I think it has to do with SmartThings removing the Classic app's Alexa and updating the other one. That just went into effect a few days ago and other people are having similar issues. I'm looking into how to fix it today and when I figure out a solution I will let you know.
Hello. Thanks for your videos, they are awesome. I have one Philips Hue bridge, which is Zigbee compatible, but I'm heaving lots to connect other devices to my network, specially non Philips Hue presence sensors and buttons, and that's why I'm thinking of buying one native Zigbee bridge to plug Zigbee devices (non Philips Hue devices), but I'm in doubt which brand/bridge should I do it... What do you recommend (I'm looking for easy to integrate and use with different brands, ... I'M NOT looking for the less expensive). Thanks in advance. (PS: My instance of HomeAssistant is running in a Docker Container of my Ubuntu Home server)
Great video, you mentioned that using your phone's GPS for a present sensor is not as reliable. You might have made it sound like you implied you do something else, is that right?
Thanks Lance. I do use my phone as a presence sensor, which uses GPS, but there are other ways that can be more accurate. For example, some people trigger automations when their phone connects to their home WiFi. Using my phone as a presence sensor is better than nothing. Just occasionally it might not work very quickly so it could be frustrating if expecting it to work perfect every time.
@@SmartHomeSolver in one of your videos of challenges you could explain how to use connecting to your home Wi-Fi as a trigger because that would be reliable

The Samsung Multipurpose sensor is my favorite IoT device. There is a neat post on the Hubitat forums to turn it into a cheap dry contact sensor, which makes it even more usefull
With a dishwasher, you don't need a button for "clean", since the vibration sensor can auto-reset it. With buttons for both "clean" and "dirty" (or a toggle button if there's an indicator) wouldn't require a vibration sensor.
Hello Smart Home Solver, I wonder if you could give me some suggestion on how to approach using motion sensors to detect intruders in the back yard mostly at night. I am trying to use the AEON MUTI SENSOR 6 but it isn't working well. I have read the instructions that say they don't work well outside. But I was trying it anyway. The problem is they either send out false alerts when there was not person or animal around, OR I can walk by it 4 or 5 times and it just doesn't send out the motion alert at all. So my question is what do you suggest for spotting people at night? I'm also using NEST OUTDOOR IQ but they also prove to be unreliable. Seems like that has to be a good solution to this. I'm ready to go old school and tie a trip-string to a bunch of tin cans LOL. Thoughts?

E.g. if I want to freeze my light setting after I select one (via Ikea remote) and don't want the "on motion detected" automation to kick in (to potentially change my light intensity or even color temperature)
I also, before going to bed each day, I use one IKEA TRADFRI switch to turn off all the lights and to keep them turned-off during night (based on one virtual switch I toggle).
This switch gets re-set (to "off") each day at 6Am and there's usually anyway enough light after that so my lights will not turn on during day-time (I use LUX value from the HUE Outside motion sensor to enable yet another virtual switch "Daylight" + some hysteresis in place to smooth out the oscillation at the edge-values so the virtual switch doesn't react to minor LUX changes),
I also use arrival sensors (despite them being what they are) to enable "welcome lights" at home.
But only if there's nobody at home prior to my arrival (yet another virtual switch used there). It wouldn't be nice if my wife is sleeping at home already. I arrive late, and all the lights in the home will turn on :-)
I also converted Smartthings leak detector to a power outage monitor (just one normally closed 230V relay plus basic soldering) and I keep my 4G router and Smartthings Hub and Arlo system running out of UPS so I know when there's some power outage at my house :-)
And yes I bend the Smartthings a lot. And yes I could rather write the scripts, but I still find it more manageable to use UI.
PS: I run somewhere around 70zigbee devices in my house. And some other creative solutions besides those I described already...
Omg speak English pls
Is it necessary to have Philips hue hub if you have Samsung SmartThings Hub and is SSTH compatible with Apple Home?
Nice video and easy to setup on my Hubitat.
Automation could be extremely practical. Great video!
I got motivation from your video. I think I supposed to change my setting after watching this.
When the presence sensors detect everybody is sleeping or outside the house, the system shuts off all the water pipes so if there ir a leaking toilet , no water is wasted
Excellent video, as always.
Couple questions, first on the "Left It Open" smartapp:
It would also be cool if we could use the multipurpose sensor to send an Alexa alert when the dishes are done!
I’m interested in this video as well. How do you program the Ikea button?
Motion sensors for lights - is so cool - which software you use for that. thanks
🤣 The Werther will BE so Nice today!
I hope that makes sense.
thanks I love this video
Thanks for the ideas and if you’ve anymore please share. I’m always looking for good reasons to use this type of tech.
Thanks! I’m always writing down automation ideas and I have some more coming your way soon.
Programing to know what weather you have whas cracking me up. Died from laughter.
Been thinking of adding motion detectors around my place but I have cats. Is there a way to keep them from triggering an event if I do get some?
Loved the shirt
It's awesome seeing you guys talk about and creating new automation with Samsung's SmartThings.
I'm just sitting here with my dumb IKEA hub an sensors because Samsung won't sell SmartThings in my country :/
I've even stopped buying smart home stuff because it's frustrating having to use google home routines that are way off being automations and the IKEA stuff that are just dumb turn off/turn on sensors or remotes...
I have some wi-fi & zigbee plugs, but they are pretty boring to work with as I just use voice to turn lamps on/off
Amazing!
(Battery powered)
I am having trouble actually finding some even after research. Thanks!
Hello. Just a quick question : the door sensor on your fridge will notify you if the door as been open more than a certain time?? Using alexa?
You can have SmartThings send you a push notification. If you wanted to have it announce out lout on an Echo you would need to create the whole thing in webCoRE.
Hello, I have a Tecking Smart Plug, which monitories the watt of the thing connected. I can see when the connected tv Is on or off...but how do I use this as a trigger for a routine? TV ON--->Lights on. thanks
Well done. I really enjoy your videos, a nice mix of information and humor. I am definitely subscribing. Keep up the great work!
The Smartthings multipurpose sensors aren’t available for purchase right now. Do you have any other recommendations?
Is it me or have the Smartthings motion sensors from Samsung disappeared? Nobody seems to have them - I’ll check out the IKEA ones, maybe if I order a couple I can get some free meatballs! Congrats on the Skillshare sponsorship.
Yeah I don't know where all the Samsung motion sensors went. The meatballs are really good and thanks!
I would like to set up a sensor to tell me when the freezer door is left open. What do you recommend and how is the easiest way to set it up? thanks
Agreed, the classic app was much better. Can't even find IP addresses of devices in the new one. Nice vid, and like the ideas.
I have a similar set up on my fridge with Aqara, it has saved my bacon more than once...literally.
Good one!
Hello. Just a quick question : the door sensor will notify you if the door as been open more than a certain time?? Using alexa?
@carlos carvalho unfortunately there isn't a way to do that with Alexa as far as I'm aware.
I also use Sonos
IKEA button will work with smart life or we need to download ikea app? If we need to download ikea app than we need to buy ikea hub?
Iv’e been watching your videos forever. Dude, you need to hook my house.
Question. I bought a smart things hub, but so far all the things I have bought won't connect. For example some lights they don't show up as a product supported even though they are z wave. Same with my alarm system. Any ideas or tips for me.
New at this, which light switch works best with the Smart things / Alexa?
I have Alexa remind me every morning to make sure I have my wallet when I open the door. 🤣
That's genius! I may have to do that myself! Thank you.
I should probably do that in my car door
Can you do this with google ?
Me too
Can you do this with google?
Another nice job, Reed. Thank you.
Thanks Hugh!
Cool tips.
1st love your channel, very helpful and I’ve recommended tons of friends to subscribe so keep up the great work 👍🏼
2nd question for you, do you Know a good simple system that will allow me to turn my water valve off if a leak is detected using SmartThings ?
So Smart Things is a central hub that is platform independent then?
I opened the dishwasher. The dishes are clean. I'm scared my wife is going to know that I know.
enjoyed the video, some good ideas going on here... but could you make a video to show how to set some of these up... like the connection to your Bose speaker
I use a magnet with two side ,one green for clean red for dirty .. switch side when emptying fisher or put it on.
@@SmartHomeSolver by the way, I always look forward to when I get a video notification of you. From your comparisons, to your ideas videos there's always something cool to think about. Like linking new smart apps tutorial! That is huge
I'm planning on that. I've just been trying to figure out the best way to do it.
Thanks!
The Samsung Multipurpose sensor is my favorite IoT device. There is a neat post on the Hubitat forums to turn it into a cheap dry contact sensor, which makes it even more usefull
NICE, thanks 4 the tips!
With a dishwasher, you don't need a button for "clean", since the vibration sensor can auto-reset it. With buttons for both "clean" and "dirty" (or a toggle button if there's an indicator) wouldn't require a vibration sensor.
Hi, what wifi device do you use to handle so many devices?
Thoughts?
Thank you Reed.
I appreciate it Ron!
