A combination of research, in various histories of life all over the world, with the story of Grandmaster Zhan SanFeng and the Mountains, will bring you closer to a more complete answer. But just like pi, there is always more! Supreme Wisdom belongs to all the Human Families of the world since time immemorial. But don't neglect THE NOW...
The Chinese have a lot of stories like the Zhang Sanfeng story. However, there is no historical record of Zhang Sanfeng, if he even existed, knowing how to fight. The philosophy of Yin and Yang came from Taoism, and Tai Chi's incorporation of this only shows that Chen Wanting, the creator of Tai Chi, was a Taoist. And that should not be surprising given that Taoism was China's indigenous religion. Chen Wanting slowed down the movements...and after a few evolutions, it got even slower like in the Yang Style, where it became possible for the elderly to learn it. The Taoist elements plus the Qigong aspects were especially appealing (religion and health topics always have very huge followings), and over time, most people stopped learning Tai Chi as a martial art. In fact, most young people would rather learn karate, muay thai boxing, BJJ, MMA etc than Tai Chi because of the misunderstanding that Tai Chi is only for old folks with limited mobility. The case of a so-called Tai Chi Master who got his ass kicked by an unknown MMA instructor is evidence enough that easily over 90% of people doing Tai Chi won't last ten seconds inside a cage. Another maybe 5% do push-hands and they would get their asses kicked just as well. The remaining 5% who learned the martial appliations and sparred with many partners are the ones who have preserved the martial art for what it's worth.
Is seems too propaganda to chenjiagou, why he writeoff wang Zhong you as the second succesor or diciples of Zhang Feng who pass Taichi to Chen Wan Ting,
Tai Chi of today is a far cry of what it was once preported to be, tai chi has lost the essence of combat a long time ago, a punch here and a palm there with a kick or two is laughable at best if you think you can use this to defend your self, not one student out of 100 will ever reach a high level of boxin, Wang Xiang Zhai
I guess if people want to train to combat, there are plenty of other more purpose focused trainings to choose from. The fact that Taichi has more followers proved that most people are not that interested in the martial art aspects any more. You can say the same for all the great religions today, that they are deviated from the original source, over the years. Things change to adapt, supply and demand.

Chen style does not recognise ZSF as the originator of Taijiquan, the other 4 styles do. This also explains the differences in flavours in them.
