If you don't already know me- hi, I'm Cheska! And I'm a film composer based in San Diego, CA :) I make videos documenting my journey and sharing the things I've learned along the way.
In this video, I share what I would do to get my first film scoring gig if I had to start over again from zero experience. Breaking into the film music industry is challenging, but by sharing this I hope to show composers that it is possible to get your foot in the door without moving to LA or applying for assistant jobs.
At the end of the day, everyone's path is different but this was mine. Using crowdfunding sites and social media was how I got my first paid film composing job and that was in 2021, and I definitely had no experience. I haven't looked back since! If I had to start over, this is what I would do to find film scoring jobs and become a film composer.
Just a note, this video is more relevant to those who don't necessarily want to pursue a career in Hollywood, but rather work as a film composer where ever they are in the world.
I hope that you find this video helpful!

There is no reason for "us" artists to be ashamed of wanting to present ethnic music to be represented more in our social lives.
Im a "white" guy from South Africa and teaching under-privilaged people music theory, with the aim to get them (trad music/beliefs) to be represented in the industry.
So, be proud if you want to have your agenda represented in society and the media that people consume, and never apologise for being insenstitive about wanting to present the world with new cultural values that are not discovered yet.
Loving your style of vlogging. Thank you for doing it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Soooo thankful for you Cheska! Great stuff here 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

AWWW appreciate you Ephraim! 🤗🙌
The Steinbeck quote that I paraphrased in the video but didn't read out loud bc I kept messing up LOL:
“In human affairs of danger and delicacy successful conclusion is sharply limited by hurry. So often men trip by being in a rush. If one were properly to perform a difficult and subtle act, he should first inspect the end to be achieved and then, once he had accepted the end as desirable, he should forget it completely and concentrate solely on the means. By this method he would not be moved to false action by anxiety or hurry or fear. Very few people learn this.”
This book is a must read. I'll add it to my list
