Spetchley Park is an illustrious Regency house in Worcestershire, England. For generations the extraordinary Berkeley family collected a veritable treasure trove of rare and important pieces on their travels and adventures across Europe, North America and India. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s specialist David MacDonald describes finding an Egyptian mummy and scrolls of Chinese wallpaper in the attic and cellar, and owner Henry Berkeley talks about the heirlooms that have been locked away for over a century, including the family harpsichord. I've never been in the house but the garden is well worth a day trip. My parents and I used to visit regularly from Birmingham in the late 60s/ early 70s, I remember the head gardener was a Mr Pomfrit. I made a nostalgic pilgrimage ten years ago, it had hardly changed at all.
The only thing in my family’s attic is old coffee cans, stacks of old birthday cards, scrap wood and cobwebs.
