I made my son a Mario kart and the front end is so heavy we had to cut a bunch of the excess cardboard out and we used an old back pack straps for should comfort. Also used the inside of wrapping paper to make the front bumper. So much work but it was sooooooo worth it!
Sometimes if the front or back of the kart is too heavy you can adjust the straps to level it out (our DK kart was very back heavy). The back pack straps are an awesome idea! Your son is going to have the coolest costume on the block! What are you going to do with it after halloween? I have ~6 sitting in my shed taking up a lot of space, but i can't bear to throw them out because i like them so much.
